Build one identical basket, select the same local store area at each chain, normalize every item to a unit price, and then add eligible discounts, fees, fuel and time. That method answers whether Albertsons is cheaper than Walmart, whether Kroger coupons change the result, and whether Aldi’s lower shelf prices justify a separate trip. Prices, stock and digital offers can change between the comparison and checkout, so save the date and verify the basket again on shopping day.
What a fair grocery-price comparison includes
A package price alone is not enough. A 12-ounce cereal box may look cheaper than a 16-ounce box, while a loyalty price may require an account, a clipped coupon or a minimum quantity. Compare the same product specification under the same shopping conditions:
- Exact brand, flavor, grade, organic status and package size.
- Price at the same nearby store or ZIP code.
- Regular price and the lowest price you can legitimately claim.
- Coupon, loyalty-account, quantity and one-time-use conditions.
- Pickup, delivery and service fees, including minimum-order rules.
- Fuel, parking, travel time and the value of an additional store visit.
- Stock status and acceptable substitutes.
Use a grocery price-book notebook or spreadsheet to record the item, unit size, price, date, store and promotion qualification. A price book makes future comparisons faster and exposes seasonal patterns instead of relying on memory.
Step 1: Freeze an identical basket
Write the list before opening any retailer site. Include the brand and size when they matter, and define an acceptable substitute when they do not. For example, “one 16-ounce jar of a specified peanut-butter brand” is a different requirement from “16 ounces of any peanut butter.”

Record specifications that change value
- Weight or volume: ounces, pounds, fluid ounces or liters.
- Count: rolls, diapers, cans, pods or individual pieces.
- Form: fresh, frozen, prepared, concentrate or ready-to-eat.
- Quality: conventional versus organic, grade, cut and fat percentage.
- Package configuration: one large package versus a multipack.
- Substitution rule: the exact replacement you will accept if the item is unavailable.
Do not let a retailer substitute a different size silently. If one store lists a 12-ounce product and another a 16-ounce product, either find matching sizes or convert both to a common unit before comparing.
Step 2: Set the same local shopping context
Prices and promotions are store-specific. Select the same ZIP code, delivery address or practical store radius at Albertsons, Walmart, Kroger and Aldi. If you are comparing physical trips, choose the actual stores you could visit rather than a national website view.
Albertsons’ weekly-ad experience is tied to a selected store, and online promotions can depend on account status. Kroger’s weekly-ad pages likewise show local weekly digital deals, with some offers requiring sign-in to clip them. Aldi publishes a clickable weekly ad, Price Drops and ALDI Finds with item-level prices, but limited-time items can sell out. Walmart’s listing should be set to the local store and the intended pickup or delivery method; do not assume a national price or an unverified loyalty rule applies locally.

- Record the store name, ZIP code and date.
- Save a screenshot or page link for an unusual price, coupon or quantity restriction.
- Note “out of stock,” “available for shipping only” or “substitution allowed.”
- Keep the cart in the same mode (in-store estimate, pickup or delivery) across retailers.
Step 3: Capture regular, advertised and eligible prices
Enter at least two prices for each item: the ordinary shelf or online price and the lowest price available to you after a valid promotion. Label the condition beside the number instead of hiding it in a note.
| Price field | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Regular price | Non-promotional price for the exact size | Shows the baseline and prevents a temporary sale from looking permanent |
| Advertised price | Weekly-ad or price-drop amount and end date, if shown | Separates a scheduled promotion from everyday pricing |
| Loyalty price | Account required, membership status and sign-in state | Someone without that account may pay more |
| Digital coupon | Coupon value, clip requirement, quantity threshold and use limit | Prevents counting an offer you cannot redeem twice |
| Final eligible price | Price after only the discounts you qualify for | Feeds the basket total and unit-price calculation |
Albertsons checks
Start with the local weekly ad, then sign in to Albertsons for U. The program describes personalized deals, points that can be redeemed for cash off or grocery discounts, and delivery or pickup. A deal shown without your account may not be the amount you receive at checkout, so record whether the price is personalized, points-based or available to everyone.

Walmart checks
Open the local Walmart grocery listing and match the exact item, size and fulfillment option. Record the displayed pickup or delivery charge and any minimum order. Because a verified, nationally applicable loyalty or fee rule is not established here, treat the local cart total as the authority rather than assuming a general Walmart policy.
Kroger checks
Open the local weekly ad, sign in when required, clip applicable digital deals and read the quantity limits. Kroger also presents personalized coupons and special offers through a digital account. A “buy five” or similar threshold must be reflected in the basket: if you need only one unit, do not assign the multi-unit price unless the offer explicitly permits it.

Use the Weekly Specials page, clickable weekly ad, Price Drops and ALDI Finds. Aldi presents an everyday-low-price approach and lists item-level prices, sometimes with a per-pound amount and an estimated package price. Treat ALDI Finds as availability-sensitive; a low listed price has no value if the item is gone when you arrive.
Step 4: Convert every item to a common unit
Unit pricing removes misleading package differences. Use the same unit for comparable products and keep the package-equivalence note beside the calculation.
Core formulas
- Price per ounce = eligible item price ÷ ounces in the package.
- Price per pound = eligible item price ÷ pounds in the package. If the label is in ounces, divide ounces by 16 first.
- Price per count = eligible item price ÷ number of pieces.
- Price per load = eligible detergent price ÷ stated loads.
- Basket total = sum of eligible item prices + pickup, delivery and service fees + travel cost.
For example, a $4.80 16-ounce package costs $0.30 per ounce. A $3.75 12-ounce package costs $0.3125 per ounce, so the apparently cheaper package is more expensive by unit. Round displayed results to cents, but keep enough precision in a spreadsheet to avoid changing the winner through rounding.

Match quality before comparing units
Unit price cannot make unlike goods equivalent. Compare the same coffee roast, meat cut, paper count, detergent concentration and organic status. A concentrated cleaner may have fewer fluid ounces but more usable applications; record the manufacturer’s stated loads or uses when that is the meaningful unit.
Step 5: Calculate the landed basket total
After unit normalization, calculate what you would actually spend. Start with the final eligible item price, not the regular price, then add costs that occur because of the shopping method.
| Cost component | How to enter it |
|---|---|
| Eligible item subtotal | Add each item after discounts you can redeem |
| Delivery fee | Use the fee displayed for the selected address and time window |
| Service or small-order fee | Include it when the cart does not meet a stated minimum |
| Pickup fee | Enter the local fee, if any, for the selected slot |
| Travel cost | Estimate round-trip miles × your chosen cost per mile, or use incremental fuel cost |
| Extra-stop time | Assign a personal value to additional driving, parking and checkout time |
Keep taxes consistent. If tax treatment differs by item or jurisdiction, compare the same tax-inclusive basis at every store; otherwise, label the totals as pre-tax. Do not count a coupon twice: a displayed sale price may already include the digital discount.
Step 6: Decide whether a split shop pays
A split shop is worthwhile only when its additional savings exceed the cost of the extra stop. Let S be the cheaper-store savings on the items moved, and let C be incremental fuel, parking, delivery and time cost. Make the second trip only when S > C.
Use a simple decision table
| Situation | Practical choice |
|---|---|
| One store is cheaper for nearly the whole basket | Use that store unless its travel or fulfillment cost erases the difference |
| Staples are much cheaper at one store, perishables at another | Split only if the savings exceed the cost of the second stop |
| The second store is on your normal route | Count only the incremental time and mileage, not the entire trip |
| One store has uncertain stock or an ALDI Finds item | Do not assign savings to an item you may need to replace elsewhere |
| Online delivery is cheaper before fees but not after them | Use the landed total, not the item subtotal, as the decision figure |
Example of the break-even test
Suppose the second store saves $6.40 on pantry items. A 9-mile round trip costs $1.80 in incremental fuel, and you value 25 minutes of extra time at $5.00. The second stop costs $6.80, so the split shop loses $0.40 even though several individual items are cheaper there. If the stop is already on your route, remove the avoidable miles and time; the same price difference may then justify splitting.

What the available benchmark can—and cannot—tell you
The 2024 Online Grocery Pricing Study reported a 5.3% Kroger premium versus Walmart and a 21.6% Safeway premium versus Walmart. Safeway is an Albertsons banner, so the latter is useful as historical context for that banner, not as a guaranteed Albertsons result. The figures came from an online sample collected in June 2024. They are not a current nationwide ranking, and the study did not provide a comparable Aldi figure.
Local stores, basket composition, promotions, account eligibility, stock and fulfillment fees can reverse that order. Use the benchmark to set expectations, then rely on your dated local basket for the decision you are making today.
Build a reusable comparison sheet
A spreadsheet prevents arithmetic errors and preserves the conditions behind each number. Use one row per item and one group of columns per retailer.
| Column | Example entry |
|---|---|
| Item specification | Brand, flavor, 16 oz, conventional |
| Required quantity | 2 |
| Regular price | $5.49 |
| Eligible discount | -$1.00; digital coupon clipped; limit one |
| Final item price | $4.49 |
| Package units | 16 oz |
| Unit price | $0.2806/oz |
| Stock and substitution | In stock; exact item required |
| Source date and store | Selected local store, comparison date |
At the bottom of each retailer’s columns, total the final item prices, then add fulfillment and travel costs. A separate “conditions” column should state account requirements, quantity thresholds, expiration dates and whether the discount is one-time.

Shopping-day verification checklist
Prices and availability can change after you make the comparison. Recheck the decision shortly before checkout:
- Confirm the selected store, ZIP code or delivery address.
- Open the current weekly ad and verify that the promotion is still active.
- Sign in and confirm that personalized prices and clipped coupons appear in the cart.
- Check quantity limits, minimum orders and one-time-use language.
- Verify exact size, count, grade and organic status.
- Replace out-of-stock items using the predefined substitution rule, then recalculate unit price.
- Review pickup, delivery, service and small-order fees at the final checkout screen.
- Save the final receipt or cart total with the date for your price book.

Assuming every advertised item will be available
Fix: Mark stock uncertainty, especially for limited-time Aldi items, and assign a realistic substitute or no savings.
Using a historical ranking as today’s answer
Fix: Treat the June 2024 benchmark as context only; your dated local basket is the current evidence.
How to interpret the result
Report three numbers rather than one headline: the regular-price basket, the eligible-promotion basket and the landed basket after fees and travel. Also report the number of items that were unavailable or substituted. This shows whether a store won because of everyday pricing, a temporary deal or a fulfillment advantage.
If Albertsons wins only after personalized deals, state that an Albertsons for U account was required. If Kroger wins only after clipped digital offers, state the sign-in and quantity conditions. If Aldi wins on unit prices but loses after an additional trip, show both totals. If Walmart has the lowest landed total, do not imply every Walmart store or future week will match it.
A practical rule for your next shop
Compare the same local basket, normalize the units, apply only discounts you qualify for, and choose the lowest landed total that still meets your brand, quality, stock and time requirements. Re-run the sheet when the weekly ads change or when your basket changes; grocery prices are a moving target, while a consistent method keeps the decision honest.
