The most reliable way to compare airline stocks is to combine reported earnings with unit economics. Start with operating revenue, operating income, operating margin, net income and diluted EPS, then normalize for capacity using available seat miles (ASM). Compare revenue per ASM (RASM) with cost per ASM (CASM), and use CASM excluding fuel (CASM-ex) to examine non-fuel cost control.
No single airline has the “best” margin in every period. A useful ranking also tests fuel exposure, labor contracts, aircraft ownership and financing, network mix, reliability, capacity growth, liquidity and debt. The objective is to determine whether an operating-margin advantage is durable or merely the result of a temporary fuel price, unusually tight capacity or one-time accounting item.
What to collect from each airline’s filings
Build the comparison from the same reporting period and the same scope of operations. Annual reports and quarterly filings normally provide the following starting data:

- Operating revenue and its components, including passenger, cargo, premium-cabin and ancillary revenue where disclosed.
- Operating expenses by category, such as salaries and benefits, aircraft fuel, maintenance, regional expenses, airport fees and aircraft ownership.
- Operating income and operating margin.
- Net income, interest expense, taxes and diluted earnings per share.
- Available seat miles (ASM), passenger load factor and, when reported, passenger yield or RASM.
- Total CASM and CASM excluding fuel, often labeled CASM-ex or CASM-X.
- Capacity growth, fleet size and utilization, aircraft purchase commitments, leases, debt and liquidity.
Keep annual and quarterly observations separate. A quarter affected by a holiday, storm season, labor settlement or a major capacity change should not be treated as a normal full-year run rate. Record whether a number is GAAP, adjusted, recurring, promotional or a one-time item.

The unit metrics that make different-size airlines comparable
Available seat miles (ASM)
ASM measures capacity: one seat flown one mile. An airline with twice as many flights can report twice the revenue and expense without being twice as efficient. Dividing by ASM converts totals into a per-unit measure.
RASM: operating revenue per available seat mile
RASM is calculated as:
RASM = operating revenue ÷ available seat miles
It captures how much revenue the airline generates from each unit of capacity. The exact numerator matters. Confirm whether the carrier uses total operating revenue or a narrower passenger-revenue definition, and whether regional operations are included.
RASM is influenced by fares, passenger mix, premium-cabin demand, ancillary fees, cargo, route length, load factor and capacity growth. A high RASM can reflect a premium-heavy network rather than superior execution across every route.

CASM is calculated as:
CASM = operating expenses ÷ available seat miles
American’s annual-report disclosure describes total operating CASM as total operating expenses divided by ASMs and identifies salaries, wages and benefits, regional expenses and other operating costs as drivers. The denominator and expense perimeter must match when comparing carriers; otherwise, a lower published CASM may simply reflect a different definition.
Unit spread
The basic operating spread is:
RASM − CASM = operating revenue spread per ASM
A positive spread indicates that revenue per unit of capacity exceeds operating cost per unit before considering non-operating items. The spread should reconcile directionally with GAAP operating margin, but it is not itself an operating-margin percentage. A carrier can have a wider spread in cents per ASM but a different margin because of accounting scope, regional operations or other revenue and expense items.
CASM-ex: a non-fuel cost lens
CASM-ex removes fuel expense, usually to isolate labor, maintenance, airport, ownership and other non-fuel execution. It is not a standardized GAAP measure. Each issuer chooses the exclusions and reconciliation, so read the footnote before comparing values.

Delta Air Lines’ 2025 Form 10-K reports total CASM of 19.31 cents and CASM-ex of 13.86 cents. The arithmetic difference is 5.45 cents per ASM, but that difference should not be treated as a universal fuel-cost benchmark because the measure is issuer-defined and the filing’s exclusions control.
| Metric | What it measures | How to use it | Key qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| ASM | Capacity produced | Normalize revenue and cost for airline size | Capacity can grow while profitability falls |
| RASM | Operating revenue per ASM | Assess revenue quality and pricing power | Check numerator, network and cabin mix |
| CASM | Operating expense per ASM | Compare total unit cost | Definitions and regional treatment can differ |
| CASM-ex | Non-fuel unit cost | Study labor and operating execution | Non-GAAP and issuer-specific |
| Operating margin | Operating income as a share of operating revenue | Judge GAAP profitability of the core operation | Review alongside capacity and special items |
How revenue quality changes the comparison
Load factor and yield
Load factor shows how much offered capacity is filled. Yield measures the revenue produced by a passenger, usually on a passenger-mile basis. A high load factor with weak yield can indicate discounting; a lower load factor with strong yield may reflect premium pricing or a deliberately higher-value network. Review both rather than treating either as a standalone score.
Premium cabins and ancillary revenue
Premium seats, loyalty-related revenue, baggage fees, seat assignments and other ancillary products can lift RASM. Determine whether growth comes from recurring customer demand, a temporary mix shift or a new fee. Compare disclosure quality: one carrier may report ancillary revenue separately while another embeds it in passenger revenue.
Cargo and network mix
Cargo can diversify revenue but may be cyclical and exposed to trade conditions. Hub concentration, long-haul versus short-haul flying and regional-feed arrangements also affect unit metrics. A long-haul network can have different stage lengths and cost behavior from a short-haul network, so compare like with like where possible.
Capacity growth
Capacity is part of the earnings story, not just a denominator. If ASMs rise faster than demand, fares and RASM may weaken. If an airline adds capacity into constrained markets, revenue can grow without immediate margin damage. Track year-over-year ASM growth beside RASM, load factor and operating margin.

Fuel
Fuel is a large and volatile expense. Track total fuel expense, fuel gallons, fuel cost per gallon, hedging effects where disclosed and fuel consumption per ASM. A falling CASM may reflect cheaper fuel rather than better operations.

Delta states in its 2024 disclosure that a one-cent increase in jet-fuel cost per gallon would add approximately $40 million to annual fuel expense, based on about four billion gallons of annual consumption. That is a company-specific sensitivity, not a rule for every airline. Apply the same question to each carrier: how many gallons does it use, what prices does it pay, and how much capacity does that consumption support?
Labor
Labor is both a cost and an operating-capacity constraint. Examine salaries, wages and benefits as a percentage of revenue and per ASM, staffing levels, productivity, overtime and the timing of ratified contracts. Wage increases can raise CASM even when management is executing well; conversely, understaffing can suppress costs temporarily while damaging reliability and future revenue.
Southwest’s 2025 filing says labor costs from ratified contracts and rate inflation have negatively affected its cost structure. It also describes continuing fuel-consumption and fuel-efficiency initiatives. Use that disclosure as a reminder to check labor agreements and productivity alongside fuel programs rather than attributing every CASM change to energy prices.

Airport, regional and other operating costs
Airport landing fees, rent, navigation charges, catering, distribution and regional-carrier payments can vary sharply by network. The Airlines for America Passenger Airline Cost Index tracks labor, fuel, food, aircraft ownership, airport landing fees, insurance, utilities and interest as production inputs. Its description calls CASM the traditional measure of airline unit operating costs and presents the index as a bellwether for input-price movements.

Move from operating income to net income
Net income incorporates interest expense, taxes, fleet financing, pension effects and other non-operating items. Two airlines with similar operating margins can produce very different diluted EPS because one carries more debt or leases aircraft on less favorable terms. Review interest expense and weighted-average diluted shares before interpreting EPS growth.
Separate recurring results from special items
Read the reconciliation whenever management presents adjusted operating income, adjusted net income or adjusted EPS. Common adjustments include restructuring, fleet-transition costs, impairment, labor-related settlements and gains or losses that management considers unusual. Do not compare one company’s adjusted figure with another company’s GAAP figure.
Balance-sheet and financial-risk checks
Airline equity can be vulnerable even when the income statement looks strong. Add these checks to the operating comparison:
- Net debt and interest burden: compare debt and finance-lease obligations with operating cash flow and interest expense.
- Liquidity: review cash, short-term investments, undrawn credit and the maturity schedule.
- Aircraft commitments: include firm purchase orders, delivery timing and pre-delivery payments.
- Lease commitments: account for operating and finance leases when assessing fixed obligations.
- Pension and labor obligations: identify underfunded plans, contract step-ups and other commitments that can absorb cash.
- Fleet-transition risk: a rapid type change can create training, maintenance, spare-parts and integration costs before efficiency benefits arrive.
These items explain why a company with the lowest CASM is not automatically the safest stock. A cost advantage can be offset by high leverage, large aircraft commitments or weak liquidity during a demand downturn.

A repeatable step-by-step comparison process
- Choose a common period. Use the latest full-year filing for a baseline, then add the latest quarter for momentum. Keep fiscal-year dates aligned and note unusual events.
- Record GAAP totals. Enter operating revenue, operating expenses, operating income, operating margin, net income, interest expense and diluted EPS.
- Normalize for capacity. Record ASMs and calculate or verify RASM and CASM using the carrier’s stated definitions.
- Calculate the unit spread. Subtract CASM from RASM and compare the direction with operating-margin changes.
- Inspect CASM-ex. Read the reconciliation, list exclusions and avoid treating unlike issuer-defined measures as identical.
- Decompose revenue. Review load factor, yield, premium-cabin contribution, ancillary revenue, cargo and capacity growth.
- Decompose costs. Track fuel, labor, maintenance, regional expenses, airport fees and aircraft ownership per ASM or as a percentage of revenue when disclosed.
- Stress fuel and labor. Examine management’s fuel sensitivity, consumption, hedging and wage agreements. Identify whether the latest margin benefited from temporary prices or precedes a contract step-up.
- Test earnings quality. Reconcile adjusted and GAAP figures and remove one-time items from your durability assessment.
- Finish with risk. Compare net debt, liquidity, interest, leases, aircraft orders, pensions, fleet age, utilization and reliability.
- Write a conditional ranking. State which airline leads on revenue quality, non-fuel cost control, balance-sheet resilience and margin durability. Avoid a single winner unless the same carrier leads across the relevant period and risk profile.
How to compare airlines of different sizes
Use dollar totals to understand scale and cash generation, but use per-ASM metrics and percentages for efficiency. A large carrier may have higher total costs yet lower CASM because fixed costs are spread over more capacity. A small carrier may report a higher margin in a niche market while lacking the liquidity or network breadth of a larger competitor.
| Question | Preferred measure | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Which airline generates more business? | Operating revenue and operating cash flow | Shows absolute scale and cash production |
| Which uses capacity more efficiently? | RASM, CASM and RASM−CASM | Controls for ASM differences |
| Which converts revenue into profit? | GAAP operating margin | Captures the core operation as reported |
| Which controls non-fuel costs? | CASM-ex with reconciliation | Separates labor and other execution from fuel volatility |
| Which can withstand a downturn? | Liquidity, net debt, interest and commitments | Measures financial flexibility |
What Delta, Southwest and American disclosures illustrate
Delta: reading a total-CASM explanation
Delta’s 2025 Form 10-K says total operating cost per ASM was 19.31 cents, comparable with 2024, primarily because lower fuel expense and a 3% increase in capacity offset higher employee costs. The statement demonstrates why a headline CASM number needs a bridge: capacity growth, fuel and labor moved in opposite directions. Check whether the same pattern appears in revenue per ASM and operating margin before calling the result an efficiency gain.
Southwest: checking labor and efficiency initiatives
Southwest’s 2025 filing links higher labor costs to ratified contracts and rate inflation and discusses ongoing fuel-consumption and fuel-efficiency initiatives. For peer analysis, pair contract timing and staffing productivity with fuel trends. A carrier can improve fuel efficiency while still reporting higher CASM because labor or other input costs rise faster.
American: confirming the denominator
American’s annual-report definition of total operating CASM—total operating expenses divided by ASMs—provides a useful denominator check. Its identification of salaries, wages and benefits, regional expenses and other operating costs also shows why a carrier-level CASM change should be traced to expense categories rather than accepted as a single management score.
How to decide whether a margin advantage is durable
Ask five questions before ranking one airline above another:
- Did RASM improve because of sustainable pricing and mix, or because of a temporary demand spike?
- Did CASM fall because of lasting productivity, or because fuel prices were unusually favorable?
- Are wage settlements, staffing needs or aircraft deliveries likely to raise future CASM?
- Did capacity grow at a pace the network could absorb without weakening yields?
- Can the balance sheet fund fleet and labor commitments through a weaker cycle?
The strongest operating profile is usually the one that preserves a healthy RASM−CASM spread across changing fuel, demand and capacity conditions, while maintaining liquidity and reliable service. A single quarter’s margin leadership is evidence, not a conclusion.
Common comparison mistakes and fixes
- Comparing total revenue or profit only: replace the size-biased view with RASM, CASM and operating margin.
- Treating CASM-ex as standardized: read every reconciliation and list the exclusions.
- Calling lower CASM automatically better: check RASM, load factor, reliability, fleet investment and capacity growth.
- Ignoring fuel: review fuel per gallon, consumption, hedging and company-specific sensitivity.
- Ignoring labor: map wage agreements, inflation, staffing and productivity to the reporting period.
- Mixing GAAP and adjusted earnings: use the company’s reconciliation before comparing results.
- Leaving out financing: include debt, interest, leases and aircraft orders when assessing equity risk.
- Comparing unlike periods: align fiscal calendars and account for seasonality and exceptional events.
- Assuming network differences are noise: explain stage length, hub structure, premium mix, cargo and regional exposure before drawing a conclusion.
A practical scorecard for your spreadsheet
Create one row per airline and one column for each measure below. Keep the reported value, definition and period in adjacent notes so a later update does not silently change the comparison.
- Operating revenue, operating income and GAAP operating margin.
- Net income, interest expense and diluted EPS.
- ASMs, RASM, CASM and CASM-ex, with each reconciliation.
- Load factor, yield, premium and ancillary revenue, cargo and capacity growth.
- Fuel expense, fuel gallons, cost per gallon and management sensitivity.
- Labor expense, contract milestones, maintenance and airport or regional costs.
- Fleet age, utilization, aircraft orders, leases and transition plans.
- Net debt, liquidity, maturities, pension and other long-term obligations.
- Reliability or operational indicators disclosed by the carrier.
Use the scorecard to form a thesis rather than a mechanical ranking. For example, one airline may lead on CASM-ex while another leads on RASM and liquidity. The investment question is which combination is most likely to persist at a reasonable valuation, not which isolated metric is lowest or highest.
