Compare AI companies’ recognized revenue first, then analyze ARR and annualized run rate as separately defined indicators. Revenue belongs to a stated accounting period and follows revenue-recognition rules. ARR is usually a point-in-time estimate of recurring contract value, while annualized run rate extrapolates a recent sales pace over twelve months. The labels sound similar, but they can describe different economic bases.
A fair comparison therefore requires the measurement date, underlying period, formula, revenue mix, contract terms, and treatment of cloud-partner sales. If those details are missing, place the figures side by side with explicit qualifications instead of presenting them as equivalent annual revenue.
Start with the metric that is actually recognized as revenue
Recognized revenue is the amount a company records for a specified reporting period after satisfying the applicable accounting requirements for promised goods or services. Under the Financial Accounting Standards Board’s Topic 606 objective, financial reporting should provide useful information about the nature, timing, and uncertainty of revenue from contracts with customers.

A quarterly revenue figure covers that quarter; a fiscal-year figure covers that fiscal year. It is not simply the company’s latest monthly sales multiplied by twelve. Recognition can depend on delivery, customer acceptance, usage, implementation work, contract modifications, and other performance obligations.

For a public company, historical revenue in a regulated filing is normally the strongest starting point because the period, accounting basis, and presentation are disclosed. It still may not be comparable with another company’s figure if one company reports a different fiscal calendar, consolidates different entities, or has a different mix of subscriptions, usage, services, and hardware.
Understand what ARR and annualized run rate mean
ARR: a recurring-contract snapshot
ARR commonly means annual recurring revenue, but there is no universal accounting definition or industry-wide calculation. Companies can use the same label for different contract populations.
One SEC-filed registrant explains ARR as a non-GAAP metric based on active, contractually binding term contracts. Its method annualizes contract value by dividing the value by the number of contract months and multiplying by 12. The disclosure also says ARR is not defined in GAAP, is not derived from a GAAP measure, and should be considered independently of revenue.

A company may include only active subscriptions, or it may include selected premium services, hosting, support, or short-term agreements. It may exclude contracts that have been signed but not started, future increases, or expected renewals. Consequently, two figures called ARR can differ materially in what they count.
Annualized run rate: extrapolating a recent pace
Annualized run rate generally takes revenue from a short interval and scales it to a year. The simplest formula is:
annualized run rate = revenue during the chosen interval × (12 ÷ number of months in that interval)
A company that reports $8 million in one month might describe a $96 million annualized run rate. That arithmetic does not establish that $96 million will be recognized over the following year. The result is sensitive to seasonality, one-time deals, customer concentration, contract timing, unusually high usage, and the exact interval selected.
Annualized run rate can be based on revenue, bookings, billings, usage, or another measure unless the company specifies otherwise. Always identify the numerator before comparing it with ARR or recognized revenue.

ARR is not automatically a forecast or annualized GAAP revenue
SEC-filed disclosures explicitly caution that ARR should not be treated as a forecast and is not annualized U.S. GAAP revenue. ARR is usually a management-defined measure of a contract base at a point in time. A forecast incorporates assumptions about future sales, churn, renewals, pricing, capacity, and costs; ARR may incorporate none of those assumptions beyond the contracts included in the company’s stated formula.
| Metric | What it measures | Typical timing | Main comparability risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Recognized revenue | Revenue recorded under the company’s accounting policy for goods or services delivered in a period | Month, quarter, or fiscal year | Different accounting periods, business mixes, and recognition patterns |
| ARR | Annualized value of a defined recurring-contract base | Point in time, often period end | Company-specific inclusion rules and contract quality |
| Annualized run rate | Recent revenue or another metric multiplied to represent twelve months | Short interval or latest snapshot | Seasonality, one-time events, usage volatility, and selected interval |
Why two AI companies’ headline numbers can diverge
The reporting periods may not match
Compare like-for-like periods before discussing growth. A fiscal-year figure cannot be directly compared with a latest-month run rate. Even two quarterly figures may cover different fiscal calendars or include an acquisition for only part of one period.
Record both the period and the measurement date. “Revenue in the quarter ended June 30” is a period statement. “ARR as of June 30” is a point-in-time statement. “Annualized revenue based on June sales” is an extrapolation from a single month. Those descriptions should remain visible whenever the numbers appear in a table or chart.
Recurring subscriptions and usage revenue behave differently
Many AI businesses combine subscriptions with API or inference consumption. Subscription revenue may recur under a fixed contract, while usage revenue can rise or fall with customer activity. Professional services, implementation, training, hardware, and one-time licenses add further differences.
A usage-heavy company can show a rapidly rising annualized run rate without having an equivalent recurring contract base. Conversely, a company with large multiyear subscriptions may have substantial ARR while recognizing revenue over the service period rather than immediately.
Contract status changes the quality of ARR
Read whether the disclosed base contains:
- Contracts that are active versus signed but not yet started.
- Minimum commitments versus cancellable arrangements.
- Short-term subscriptions or month-to-month plans.
- Automatic renewals, assumed renewals, or no renewal assumption.
- Scheduled price increases or only the currently binding amount.
- Ramped contracts whose full value is not yet available.
A contractually binding, active minimum commitment is a different risk profile from an estimate that assumes customers renew or expand.
Accounting presentation can differ by distribution channel
AI companies increasingly sell through cloud marketplaces, resellers, and other partners. Depending on the contract and accounting policy, a company may report the gross transaction value or only the amount it retains as revenue. The partner may also report its own portion under a separate arrangement.

A step-by-step method for comparing AI companies
- Write the exact metric label. Copy the company’s wording: recognized revenue, annual recurring revenue, annual run rate, annualized revenue, bookings, billings, or another term. Do not silently rename a run rate as ARR.
- Capture the date and underlying period. Note the fiscal period for revenue, the “as of” date for ARR, and the interval used for any annualization. Include the fiscal year-end if it differs from the calendar year.
- Locate the primary disclosure. Prefer audited financial statements, SEC filings, and earnings-release exhibits. For a private company, identify whether the number is a company statement, investor presentation, or secondary media report.
- Copy the formula. Record the annualization factor, contract-value calculation, and whether the company uses gross contract value, billed amounts, usage, or its retained share.
- Map the revenue composition. Separate subscriptions, API or consumption revenue, services, support, hosting, hardware, and one-time transactions wherever the disclosure allows.
- Assess contract quality. Identify active and binding contracts, minimum commitments, cancellation rights, ramp schedules, short-term terms, and whether renewals or future expansions are excluded.
- Check distribution treatment. Determine whether direct sales, cloud marketplaces, and resellers are included on a gross or net basis, and whether the company discloses its policy.
- Decide whether normalization is supportable. If definitions and source data align, calculate a clearly labeled normalized view. If they do not, show the figures side by side with the mismatch rather than manufacturing an adjustment.
What public-company disclosures illustrate
Public filings provide useful examples of why the label alone is insufficient. They are examples of company policies, not a common industry standard.
| Disclosure example | Definition or treatment described | What a reader should infer |
|---|---|---|
| SEC-filed registrant, Q1 2026 earnings-release exhibit | ARR uses active and contractually binding term contracts; contract value is divided by term months and multiplied by 12. The filing states that ARR is not defined in GAAP, is not derived from a GAAP measure, and is not revenue. | The figure is a point-in-time contract metric with explicit exclusions and should not be presented as annualized GAAP revenue. |
| PTC SEC quarterly filing | “ARR (Annual Run Rate)” represents the annualized value of active subscription software, SaaS, hosting, and support contracts at the end of the reporting period. | The portfolio includes specified contract categories and is measured at period end; the definition still belongs to PTC and cannot be assumed for another company. |
| Amplitude SEC filing | ARR is based on subscription agreements at a point in time and includes specified contracted premium services. The filing says ARR is neither annualized U.S. GAAP revenue nor a forecast. | Premium services may be included when contracted, but expected future sales and GAAP recognition remain separate concepts. |
| Another public-company filing | “Annual Run Rate” uses active contract value based on contract duration, excludes future committed increases, and does not assume renewals. | Two companies can both report a run-rate label while using different exclusions and renewal assumptions. |
How to calculate and present a normalized view
Use separate formulas for separate metrics
For a short-period revenue extrapolation:
monthly run rate = latest month’s recognized revenue × 12
quarterly run rate = latest quarter’s recognized revenue × 4
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →For a contract-based ARR calculation where the company provides contract value and term:
contract ARR = contract value ÷ contract term in months × 12
Do not apply the contract formula to recognized revenue, and do not apply a revenue annualization factor to a contract base unless the company defines the metric that way.
Illustrative arithmetic, not company performance
Suppose a fictional AI provider reports $12 million of recognized revenue for a quarter. A simple quarterly run rate is $48 million, calculated as $12 million × 4. If the same provider discloses $30 million of active subscription contracts with an average twelve-month term, its ARR would be $30 million under that stated contract base. Those figures answer different questions: one extrapolates a recent accounting period, while the other describes recurring contractual value.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If $4 million of the quarter’s revenue came from a one-time implementation project, a reader should not treat the full $48 million extrapolation as recurring. The appropriate presentation would show the one-time component and explain that the simple run rate includes it unless the company provides a recurring-only calculation.

Keep an evidence column
A comparison worksheet should include:
| Field | Entry to record |
|---|---|
| Company and metric | Exact label used by management |
| Measurement date | Period end or point-in-time date |
| Underlying period | Month, quarter, trailing twelve months, or contract snapshot |
| Formula | Annualization factor or contract-value method |
| Included streams | Subscriptions, usage, services, support, hosting, hardware, or other items |
| Contract assumptions | Active status, minimums, cancellations, ramps, price increases, and renewals |
| Channel treatment | Direct, marketplace, reseller, gross, or net presentation |
| Evidence quality | Audited filing, SEC exhibit, company statement, or secondary report |
How cloud-partner sales affect comparisons
Suppose an AI provider sells through a cloud marketplace. The customer may pay the marketplace, which retains a fee or records a portion of the transaction under its own arrangement. The AI provider’s reported revenue may therefore be lower than the customer’s total spend, depending on the contractual relationship and accounting conclusion.
For comparison purposes, ask four questions:
- Who is the customer in the provider’s contract?
- Is the provider the principal or an agent for the promised service?
- Does the company report the marketplace transaction gross or net?
- Does its ARR definition use the same basis as recognized revenue?
If a disclosure does not answer those questions, label the channel treatment as not established. Do not add a partner’s share to the provider’s revenue merely because a news report describes a larger end-customer spend. Conversely, do not assume a lower reported figure means weaker demand without understanding the arrangement.
Evidence standards for public and private AI companies
Public companies
Use the latest annual report, quarterly filing, earnings-release exhibit, and the footnote or non-GAAP reconciliation that defines the metric. Check whether the definition changed from the prior period. A restated or redefined ARR series can make year-over-year growth appear different even when the underlying business did not change in the same way.

Private companies
Private-company run rates are often reported in interviews, investor materials, or media coverage rather than audited financial statements. Treat the figure as a management or media-reported snapshot. Preserve the exact date and wording, and do not present it as historical revenue recognized under GAAP.
The available evidence does not establish a definitive, audited set of comparable revenue figures for private AI companies. Nor is there one generally accepted definition of “annualized revenue.” For any named-company numerical comparison, verify the latest directly attributable disclosure before publishing or relying on the number.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common mistakes and how to correct them
| Mistake | Why it fails | Correction |
|---|---|---|
| Ranking ARR as if it were revenue | ARR may be a point-in-time contract measure with company-specific inclusions. | Present recognized revenue separately and define ARR in the same table. |
| Calling a one-month extrapolation “annual revenue” | The amount is not yet recognized and may include temporary usage or a one-time sale. | Label it annualized run rate and show the interval used. |
| Assuming every ARR figure includes renewals | Some companies explicitly exclude renewals or future expansion. | Read the renewal and expansion language in the definition. |
| Ignoring usage revenue | Consumption can be volatile and may not be contractually recurring. | Separate subscription ARR from usage or explain that the run rate includes both. |
| Adding cloud-partner gross merchandise value to provider revenue | Principal-versus-agent and gross-versus-net treatment can change recognized revenue. | Use the provider’s disclosed accounting basis unless a supported adjustment is available. |
| Comparing a private-company media figure with an audited filing | The evidence, assurance, and definitions are different. | Mark the private figure as a company or media-reported run rate and keep the evidence levels visible. |
| Using the same growth denominator after a definition change | A revised ARR population can create artificial growth or decline. | Reconcile old and new definitions or qualify the trend as not directly comparable. |
A practical decision framework
When you can make a direct comparison
A direct comparison is reasonable when both companies report the same metric for matching dates or periods, disclose substantially similar included streams, use comparable contract-status rules, and explain channel treatment. Even then, state the remaining differences.
When you should show a qualified comparison
Use a qualified side-by-side display when the dates differ slightly, one company includes contracted services, or one company reports a run rate while the other reports ARR. Put the definition beside each number and avoid a single combined ranking.
When no normalization is defensible
Do not calculate an adjusted figure when the company has not disclosed the contract population, period, gross-versus-net basis, or revenue mix needed for the adjustment. The honest conclusion is that the figures are not apples-to-apples on the available evidence.

How to write a credible comparison table
Use a table that makes the differences impossible to miss:
| Company | Metric | Date or period | Formula or definition | Included revenue or contracts | Channel basis | Evidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Company A | Recognized revenue | Quarter ended [date shown in source] | Accounting-period revenue | Streams disclosed in filing | Policy disclosed or not stated | Audited or SEC-filed |
| Company B | ARR | As of [date shown in source] | Company’s contract annualization method | Active contracts and specified services | Gross or net treatment as disclosed | SEC filing or company disclosure |
| Company C | Annualized run rate | Based on [month or quarter] | Underlying amount multiplied by 12 or 4 | Recurring and one-time items identified where possible | Not stated unless source explains it | Company statement or secondary report |
Replace bracketed descriptors with the exact dates from the source before publication; never leave a generic period in a finished comparison. If a value is not disclosed, write “not stated” rather than infer it.
Key questions readers usually ask
Is ARR the same as revenue?
No. Revenue is recognized for a reporting period under accounting requirements. ARR is a company-defined annualized view of a recurring contract base, usually measured at a point in time.
Is annualized run rate a forecast?
No. It is an extrapolation of a selected recent pace. It becomes forecast-like only when management adds assumptions about future sales, renewals, usage, or other events; those assumptions must be disclosed separately.
Can I multiply quarterly revenue by four?
You can calculate a quarterly run rate, but it is not automatically the company’s annual revenue. Seasonality, one-time transactions, customer concentration, and changing usage can make the extrapolation unrepresentative.
Why might an AI company’s ARR exceed its latest revenue?
ARR can represent the annualized value of active contracts at period end, while revenue reflects only the portion recognized during the period. New contracts, ramp schedules, and timing of service delivery can widen the difference.
What should I do when a company gives only a headline number?
Record the exact wording, date, source, and metric label. If the formula, included streams, contract status, or partner treatment is missing, report the limitation and avoid a normalized ranking.
Bottom line
Revenue, ARR, and annualized run rate are useful only when their definitions stay attached to the numbers. Start with recognized revenue for the same accounting period, then evaluate ARR as a company-specific recurring-contract measure and annualized run rate as a recent-pace extrapolation. A comparison that shows the date, formula, contract quality, revenue mix, evidence level, and cloud-partner treatment is more informative than a league table built from identical labels.
