The best version of a new game is the one that fits your hardware, friends, preferred controls, and budget—not automatically the platform with the highest advertised resolution. Compare the exact PC requirements and console generation, then check six things in order: performance, controls and accessibility, multiplayer and saves, included content and timing, portability, and total cost. A publisher’s support page should settle cross-play and cross-progression before you buy.

Start with the exact release and platform generation

Write down the game’s supported platforms exactly as the publisher lists them. “Xbox” can mean Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, or both; “PlayStation” can mean PS4, PS5, or a cross-generation package. “Switch” and Switch 2 are separate hardware targets. A comparison that blends generations can promise features the version you are actually buying does not have.

  • PC: record the Windows version, CPU, graphics card, RAM, storage requirement, and whether the game uses a launcher or account beyond the storefront.
  • PlayStation: identify PS5, PS4, or both, and check whether the purchase includes a cross-generation entitlement.
  • Xbox: identify Series X|S, Xbox One, or both. Record Smart Delivery and any separate Series X|S build.
  • Nintendo: identify the original Switch, Switch 2, or a game that uses a Switch 2 upgrade or compatibility mode.

Use the developer’s support page for game-specific modes, patches, save behavior, online requirements, and content. Platform manufacturers document hardware capabilities, but those capabilities do not prove that a particular game uses them.

Compare performance and image quality without guessing

Performance is more than a maximum output number. Record the game’s actual resolution mode, frame-rate mode, image reconstruction or upscaling, HDR and VRR behavior, loading times, and stability. Use tests of the same game version whenever possible; a launch build may perform differently after a patch.

#1 Best Overall
Nintendo Switch 2 System
  • The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
  • Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
  • GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play

PC: match the requirements to your system

Begin with the official minimum and recommended requirements. Compare each item with your own CPU, GPU, system memory, available storage, operating-system version, and display resolution. A recommended specification normally describes a target experience, not a guaranteed frame rate.

  1. Record the game’s minimum and recommended CPU, GPU, RAM, storage, and operating-system versions.
  2. Compare those requirements with your installed hardware, not just the model name. Laptop graphics chips, for example, can perform differently from desktop versions with similar branding.
  3. Find a credible test of the same game version and note its resolution, graphics preset, upscaling mode, ray-tracing setting, and frame-rate target.
  4. Allow headroom for background applications, texture streaming, shader compilation, and future patches.

PC’s advantage is control: you can trade shadows, reflections, textures, crowd density, and effects for a steadier frame rate. It also offers hardware upgrade paths, high-refresh and ultrawide displays, and mods where the developer and community support them. Its disadvantage is variation. Two PCs that satisfy the same printed requirement can deliver different frame pacing, noise, loading, or ray-tracing performance, so do not promise a frame rate without a test for that game.

PlayStation 5: capable hardware, game-specific modes

Sony’s PS5 specification manual describes a custom x86-64 AMD Zen 2 CPU and a 10 TFLOPS AMD Radeon RDNA-based graphics engine. The console can work with 4K 120Hz televisions, 8K televisions, and variable refresh rate (VRR) displays when the game and display support those features.

Those are platform capabilities, not a claim that every title renders at native 4K or sustains 120 frames per second. For each game, record whether its menu offers a quality mode, performance mode, ray tracing, 120Hz mode, or VRR support. Check whether a PS5 version is native or a backward-compatible PS4 build, because the latter can have different resolution, loading, or feature limits.

Xbox Series X and Series S: separate targets

Xbox’s technology overview lists a Series X performance target of 4K at 60 FPS and up to 120 FPS. Treat that wording as a hardware target rather than a guarantee of native 4K or a locked 120 FPS in every game. Series S has a different performance and memory profile, so never infer its result from a Series X test.

Check whether the game supplies distinct Series X and Series S modes, whether it supports Smart Delivery, and whether an Xbox One version is included. Also record the platform’s online requirement for the game’s multiplayer mode. A title can share saves or an entitlement across Xbox generations while still using different visual settings on each console.

Switch and Switch 2: measure handheld and docked play separately

Switch 2 is the portability-focused option, but its output depends on the mode and the game. Nintendo documents TV, tabletop, and handheld use; a 7.9-inch 1920×1080 HDR10 display with VRR up to 120Hz; and 256GB of internal storage. Supported games can output up to 4K when docked and reach frame rates up to 120 FPS. These are maximum platform features, not a promise that a particular port reaches them.

Record handheld resolution and frame rate separately from docked output. Note dynamic resolution, image reconstruction, loading behavior, battery impact, and whether visual effects or online features differ from other versions. A Switch or Switch 2 release may omit ray tracing, mods, a graphics mode, local co-op, or downloadable content available elsewhere; verify each item with the developer.

Platform Documented capability What you still need to verify for the game
PC Adjustable settings and upgradeable hardware Requirements, tested settings, frame pacing, launcher, mods, and display support
PS5 Zen 2 CPU, RDNA-based 10 TFLOPS graphics engine, 4K/120Hz, 8K and VRR support where supported Native resolution, quality/performance modes, ray tracing, VRR behavior, and PS5 versus PS4 build
Xbox Series X|S Series X target of 4K at 60 FPS and up to 120 FPS Series X versus Series S settings, Smart Delivery, frame-rate lock, and cross-generation content
Switch 2 7.9-inch 1080p HDR10 screen, VRR up to 120Hz, 256GB storage, up to 4K docked and up to 120 FPS in supported games Handheld versus docked output, battery, loading, port-specific compromises, and feature parity

Controls, accessibility, and display your setup can actually use

Compare the input devices before comparing pixels. A competitive shooter may benefit from mouse and keyboard on PC, while a couch-focused game may feel better with a controller. Check whether the game supports both input methods simultaneously, whether aim-assist rules change, and whether keyboard prompts appear correctly.

Nintendo Switch with Neon Blue and Neon Red Joy-Con - Handheld Gaming Console
  • 6.2” LCD screen
  • Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
  • Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
  • Detachable Joy-Con controllers
  • Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends
  • Control layout: look for complete button remapping, stick sensitivity, trigger dead zones, gyro aiming, toggle versus hold actions, and alternative controller layouts.
  • Accessibility: record subtitle size and speaker labels, color filters, contrast, text-to-speech or text verbalization, audio sliders, narration, one-handed or simplified controls, and difficulty assists.
  • Platform features: note controller haptics, adaptive triggers, motion controls, system-level remapping, and whether the game supports them rather than merely the hardware.
  • Display needs: check HDR calibration, field-of-view controls, ultrawide support, 120Hz modes, and readable text in handheld mode.

Nintendo says Switch 2 includes accessibility options such as adjustable fonts and color tone, text verbalization, and button customization. That platform-level support can matter even when a game’s own menu is limited. Confirm which options the title exposes and whether a system setting applies to it.

Multiplayer, cross-play, and cross-progression are title-specific

Do not assume that the same game connects every platform. Build a matrix using the publisher’s current support information, separating cross-play (playing together), cross-progression (carrying progress), cross-save (synchronizing saves), and account linking.

Question What to verify
Who can play together? Platform, generation, region, mode, and whether parties require the same edition
What transfers? Story saves, online rank, cosmetics, purchases, currencies, settings, and achievements
Which account is required? Publisher account, console account, PC launcher account, or a linked combination
What does online play cost? Console subscription tier, free-to-play exception, voice-chat method, and parental controls

Why examples from other games do not predict yours

EA SPORTS FC currently groups current-generation PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC for cross-play, while Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 do not support cross-play for FC. EA also gives examples of cross-generation progression—PS4 to PS5 and Xbox One to Series X|S—but says progress does not transfer from PlayStation to Xbox. That is a title policy, not a universal console rule.

Apex Legends illustrates the opposite pattern: EA says players can party across PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series, Nintendo Switch, and PC through the EA App or Steam, with in-game voice chat. Use such examples to understand the questions to ask, never to infer behavior for a new release.

When friends are split across systems

  1. List every friend’s exact platform and generation.
  2. Check the game’s cross-play matrix for the specific mode you intend to use.
  3. Confirm whether voice chat works in-game and whether a platform subscription is required.
  4. Verify cross-progression before buying downloadable content or a premium edition on a second platform.

If a friend group cannot play together, multiplayer compatibility should outweigh a modest difference in resolution. Choose from the platforms that are actually eligible, then compare performance, controls, and cost within that group.

Included content, patches, mods, and release timing

Compare editions, not only platforms. Record the base game, launch bonuses, season pass, expansions, cosmetic packs, early-access period, and any upgrade fee. A more expensive edition may bundle content that would cost more later, while a platform-specific package may omit an expansion or release it later.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Release timing: note simultaneous launch, delayed port, early access, and whether the physical and digital versions contain the same build.
  • Patches: check the developer’s update history and whether the platform receives patches at the same time.
  • Mods: PC often has the broadest mod support, but only where the developer permits it; console versions may have curated mod systems or none.
  • Cloud or streamed builds: identify whether a purchase runs locally or requires an internet connection for cloud streaming.
  • Cross-generation entitlements: verify Smart Delivery, PS4-to-PS5 upgrades, and save-transfer rules in writing.

Do not treat a later port as automatically complete. Compare modes, downloadable content, local multiplayer, accessibility, and online populations version by version.

Portability and daily convenience

Portability can be more valuable than a higher preset. Switch 2 supports handheld, tabletop, and TV play, so record how the game behaves in each mode. Check suspend and resume, sleep-mode downloads, control comfort, text legibility, battery drain, cartridge or download size, and internal storage capacity.

For PC, compare desk space, monitor compatibility, controller pairing, shader-compilation waits, and whether you can move the device easily. For PS5 and Xbox, consider couch distance, quick-resume or resume behavior, storage expansion, and whether another household member can use the console without interrupting your save. Convenience is a recurring part of the purchase, not an afterthought.

Calculate the total cost, not just the store price

No single platform-wide price is reliable: game prices, editions, taxes, discounts, subscriptions, and storage costs vary by country and change over time. Calculate the cost in your region on the date you intend to buy.

Cost component Questions to answer
Game edition Which edition includes the content you want, and is it digital, physical, or both?
Online access Does multiplayer require a console subscription, and is the game free-to-play?
Hardware Do you need a console, upgraded PC component, monitor, dock, or additional controller?
Storage Will the install fit, and what does an approved expansion cost in your market?
Future content Are expansions, season passes, or platform upgrades extra?
Second copy Would another household or cross-platform player need a separate license?

Record whether a discount is promotional, whether a subscription catalog license can disappear, and whether a physical copy still requires a large download. For a fair comparison, put one-time hardware costs and recurring subscription costs in separate columns.

A repeatable comparison worksheet

Use this sequence for any new release:

  1. Define the audience: list your display, PC hardware, controller preferences, location, and the friends you need to join.
  2. Capture official requirements: copy the game’s platform list, PC specifications, supported generations, edition contents, and online rules.
  3. Record tested performance: write down resolution, preset, upscaling, ray tracing, frame-rate target, loading, and patch version.
  4. Check controls and accessibility: verify remapping, subtitles, color options, audio controls, text size, motion features, and input support.
  5. Build the multiplayer matrix: separate cross-play, cross-progression, cross-save, account linking, and subscription requirements.
  6. Compare content and timing: check DLC, mods, patches, upgrade paths, and delayed features.
  7. Test convenience: assess handheld/tabletop/TV use, resume behavior, storage, battery, and setup time.
  8. Total the regional cost: include the exact edition, tax, subscription, storage, accessories, and future content.
  9. Apply the decision rule: eliminate platforms that cannot play with your group or meet a must-have accessibility requirement; choose among the survivors.

Common comparison mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Reading a console maximum as game performance: 4K, 120Hz, VRR, and 10 TFLOPS describe capability. Verify the title’s actual modes.
  • Using the wrong generation: PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Series X|S, Switch, and Switch 2 can have different builds and online populations.
  • Assuming cross-play: check the publisher’s matrix; even games from the same company can use opposite policies.
  • Ignoring cross-progression limits: progress may follow a console family but not transfer between PlayStation and Xbox.
  • Comparing launch prices without region or date: record currency, edition, taxes, promotion period, and recurring costs.
  • Testing different versions: compare the same patch, settings, display resolution, and frame-rate target.
  • Forgetting handheld compromises: inspect text size, battery behavior, loading, storage, and missing features in portable mode.
  • Assuming accessibility is universal: platform options and game options differ; verify the controls and language support you need.

Which platform should you choose?

Choose PC when flexibility is the priority

PC is the strongest fit if you want adjustable settings, high-refresh or ultrawide displays, mods where supported, and a machine that meets the game’s requirements with headroom. Accept the need to tune settings and troubleshoot configuration differences.

Choose PS5 or Xbox when you want fixed hardware and simple couch play

A current console suits players who value predictable setup, a living-room experience, and the friends or subscription ecosystem on that network. Decide between PS5 and Xbox primarily by your friends, library, account history, controller preference, and the game’s exact generation features—not by theoretical output alone.

Choose Switch 2 when portability or accessibility wins

Switch 2 is the logical choice when handheld or tabletop play, Nintendo-specific content, or its documented accessibility features matters more than maximum graphics settings. Confirm that the port includes the modes, downloadable content, and online features you expect.

When the answer is a tie

Use this order as a tie-breaker: multiplayer eligibility, must-have accessibility or control features, stable performance on your display, included content and timing, portability, then total cost. That order prevents a small visual advantage from outweighing a platform your friends cannot join or a control option you cannot use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I buy a game on the platform with the highest advertised resolution?

No. Advertised output is a platform capability. Compare the game’s tested resolution mode, frame-rate target, upscaling, VRR/HDR support, and stability on the exact hardware generation you own.

Can I move my progress from PlayStation to Xbox?

Not automatically. Cross-progression is set by each game; some titles support transfers within a console family but block movement between PlayStation and Xbox.

Is Switch 2 always the best portable version?

It is the relevant choice for handheld, tabletop, or TV play, but verify the specific port’s resolution, battery behavior, loading, downloadable content, and online features before buying.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What information should I save when comparing PC performance tests?

Record the game version, resolution, graphics preset, upscaling mode, ray tracing setting, frame-rate target, and test hardware. Without those details, a frame-rate claim is difficult to apply to your own PC.
