The interface varies by model, plan, device, workspace settings, and rollout, so follow the controls shown in your account rather than expecting every Canvas feature everywhere.
What ChatGPT Canvas does for coding
Canvas was introduced as an interactive workspace for working with ChatGPT on longer writing and coding tasks. It supports collaborative editing, inline suggestions, and debugging, rather than limiting the exchange to a sequence of chat messages. OpenAI’s current guidance also describes coding actions in code blocks within chat responses; the exact controls available depend on your account and settings.
OpenAI’s 2024 launch description included shortcuts for reviewing code, adding logs or comments, fixing bugs, and porting code among JavaScript, TypeScript, Python, Java, C++, and PHP. Treat those as launch-era examples, not a guarantee that each shortcut is available in the current interface. The current code-block guidance is the better guide to what you can do now.
How to code with ChatGPT, step by step
1. Give it a bounded task
State the programming language, what the code should do, relevant constraints, and any existing code or error message. A narrow request is easier to inspect and refine than a broad request to build an entire application.

For example: “In Python, write a function that reads a list of prices and returns the average. Reject an empty list with a clear error. Keep the function signature as average_price(prices).” If you are modifying existing code, include the relevant section and describe what must stay unchanged.
2. Inspect the code and its language
Check the language label on the code block and read the whole response before using it. If you need clarification, ask about a specific line or behavior—for example, “Explain why this function returns None when the list is empty.” Use the code editing controls when they appear; you can also ask ChatGPT for a proposed change in the conversation.

3. Make one change at a time
After reviewing the first version, request a focused edit. Examples include: “Fix this error and explain why it happened,” or “Add input validation without changing the public function signature.” Small iterations make it easier to see whether a change solved the problem or introduced a new issue.
4. Preview only when the option is offered
If a Preview control appears, use it for supported content. OpenAI lists previews for HTML pages, React components, SVG images, Mermaid diagrams, and Vega or Vega-Lite charts. If Preview is absent, that code block does not support preview in the current interface.

5. Run Python when execution is available
When a supported Python code block offers execution, run it and inspect both the output and any errors. Execution takes place in a sandboxed environment, not an unrestricted computer. Workspace administrators can control code execution and network access, and a preview that needs outside resources may ask permission before connecting.
6. Check that your edits are saved
Supported edits to code blocks save with the conversation after a short delay. Edits made in Temporary Chat may not persist after the conversation ends, so copy anything you need to keep before closing it.

Can ChatGPT Canvas run or preview your code?
Sometimes, depending on the code type and the controls available to you. The current Help Center distinguishes editing and copying code from optional execution and previews. The options are not universal across accounts, and a visible preview or execution control does not establish that the code is correct or suitable for production.

What to do if Canvas, Preview, or Run is missing
Canvas and code-block features vary by plan, device, workspace settings, model, and rollout. OpenAI’s May 2026 release notes say Canvas is no longer available in GPT-5.5 Instant or GPT-5.5 Thinking; writing and coding functionality is supported directly in chat responses through writing and code blocks. Paid users could continue using Canvas temporarily through legacy models until its sunset. Because model availability and product controls can change, check the model selector and the features actually shown in your account.

- No Canvas option: Try working directly with a writing or code block in chat if available. A separate Canvas workspace is not available in every model or experience.
- No Preview button: Confirm that the content is one of the listed preview types. Without the control, the block is not previewable in that interface.
- No Python execution option: Execution may not be enabled for your account or workspace. Ask your workspace administrator about controls, or run the code in an appropriate external environment.
- A preview asks to connect: Review the permission request. A preview that needs outside resources may request permission, and workspace settings can limit network access.
When Canvas is useful—and when to use another environment
Canvas or code blocks are suited to drafting a snippet, iterating on a function, reviewing a focused change, or inspecting supported preview content alongside ChatGPT. An external development environment is a better fit when you need an execution runtime that is not offered, broader system or network access, or a repository-based workflow. OpenAI’s feature guidance does not establish Canvas as a replacement for a full local development environment, repository workflow, or production testing.
Whichever route you use, treat generated code as a draft: inspect it, verify behavior against your requirements, and test it in the environment where it will actually run. A sandboxed run or preview can help check a limited case; it is not proof that the code is secure, correct in every situation, or ready to deploy.
