What’s actually slowing this PC down?

In WordPress publishing, “cloaking” usually means replacing a long merchant URL with a short, readable path on your domain—such as example.com/go/tool—that redirects visitors to the merchant. This can make links easier to manage, but it does not automatically make them acceptable to every affiliate program. Check the program’s current terms, keep required disclosures visible, and do not confuse link management with Google’s search-policy definition of cloaking.
What affiliate-link cloaking means in WordPress
A managed affiliate link uses your domain and a memorable slug while storing the full tracking URL in one central place. You can then update the destination without editing every article where the link appears. Depending on the tool and its settings, you may also receive click-management features.
This URL format alone does not promise higher rankings, faster pages, or better conversions. Its practical benefits are readability and centralized maintenance. Whether a redirect is allowed depends on the affiliate network or merchant whose link you are using.
Link management is different from Google’s cloaking policy
Google uses “cloaking” in a separate search-policy sense: “Cloaking refers to the practice of presenting different content to users and search engines with the intent to manipulate search rankings and mislead users.” A publisher redirecting a readable affiliate path to the same merchant destination shown to visitors is not automatically doing that.

The risk arises when a site deliberately serves materially different content to crawlers and people to manipulate rankings or mislead them. A branded redirect does not excuse deceptive pages, hidden destinations, or search-engine-only content.

Amazon Associates needs special caution
Amazon Associates terms say participants must not cloak, hide, spoof, or otherwise obscure the URL of the site containing Special Links when doing so prevents Amazon from reasonably determining the referring site or application. Amazon also prohibits shortening or placement that makes it unclear that a user is being sent to an Amazon Site.
Rank #2
Therefore, do not assume a generic path such as /go/product is acceptable for an Amazon Special Link. Keep Amazon links direct and visibly Amazon-bound unless the current written terms for your program and implementation clearly permit the redirect. A WordPress plugin cannot override those terms.
Other networks
Read the current operating agreement for each network or merchant. Look specifically for rules covering redirects, link shorteners, masked destinations, subdomains, approved traffic sources, and whether the referring page must remain identifiable. Save the applicable terms and recheck them when the program changes.

A general WordPress workflow for managed affiliate links
The labels differ by plugin, so treat this as a safe process rather than verified instructions for a particular product version.
- Choose a maintained link-management plugin. Confirm that it lets you leave individual links direct or exclude them from any masking feature, and review its documentation and update history.
- Create a link record. Enter the complete affiliate destination supplied by the network. Add a descriptive internal name so another editor can identify the merchant, product, and campaign.
- Select a readable slug. Use a concise path that describes the destination without implying something the visitor will not find. Avoid slugs that conceal an Amazon destination when Amazon’s terms require clarity.
- Choose redirect behavior only where permitted. Use the plugin’s documented setting for the approved program; do not select a redirect or masking option merely because it is available.
- Insert the managed URL in your content. Place it on a recommendation, comparison, or call to action where the surrounding copy explains what the reader will get.
- Inspect the published page. Open the link as a visitor, verify the final merchant destination and tracking parameters, check mobile behavior, and confirm that the disclosure appears close to the recommendation.
- Record exceptions. Mark links that must remain direct—such as a program-restricted Amazon link—so future edits do not accidentally route them through a generic redirect.
No particular plugin, redirect type, speed improvement, or SEO outcome is established here. Test the exact plugin version and configuration you plan to use before deploying it site-wide.
Disclose the commission relationship even when the URL is redirected
Changing the URL does not change the advertising relationship. Federal Trade Commission guidance says to disclose the relationship to the retailer clearly and conspicuously so readers can decide how much weight to give your endorsement. The disclosure should be close to the recommendation; “affiliate link” by itself may not tell consumers that you receive payment.
A plain-language example is: “I get commissions for purchases made through links in this post.” Put the statement where a reader encounters the recommendation, not only on a distant disclosure page.

Amazon’s additional requirements
Amazon requires clear, conspicuous link-level disclosure near affiliate links or product reviews and the site statement: “As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.” Follow both requirements and any newer wording or placement rules in the current Associates documentation.

| Evaluation area | Questions to ask before adoption |
|---|---|
| Program exceptions | Can a link remain direct or be excluded individually from masking? |
| Redirect controls | Are the available settings documented, and can you apply them per link? |
| Organization | Can editors search, rename, categorize, and update destinations centrally? |
| Reporting | Does the plugin explain what click data it records and how it handles privacy? |
| Editor workflow | Can authors insert links without losing the required disclosure? |
| Maintenance | Is the plugin compatible with your WordPress and PHP versions, and is support current? |
| Cost and support | Are current pricing, renewal terms, and support limits clear before purchase? |
These are selection criteria, not a ranking. Verify every feature in the plugin’s current documentation and in a staging site.
Keep the surrounding content genuinely useful
Google identifies thin affiliation as content that adds little beyond copied merchant descriptions. Add original information instead: explain who the product suits, compare meaningful alternatives, describe limitations, report your evaluation method when you have one, and identify commercial links clearly. Authored content with editorial responsibility and marked commercial relationships is more transparent to readers, but no format guarantees a ranking outcome.

Pre-publish checklist
- Is the redirect allowed by the specific affiliate program?
- Can visitors understand where the link leads, especially when the merchant requires destination clarity?
- Does the page show a clear commission disclosure next to the recommendation?
- Does an Amazon page include the required Associate statement as well as link-level disclosure?
- Have you tested the final destination, tracking, mobile behavior, and broken-link handling?
- Does the article provide original guidance rather than copied merchant text?
- Can another editor identify and update the destination without accidentally changing a restricted link?
