In the Steam desktop client on Linux, open Steam > Settings > Downloads, choose Clear Download Cache, and confirm. Steam restarts or returns to a sign-in screen; log in again. Steam says this reset leaves currently installed games untouched, so it does not require reinstalling them.
What clearing the download cache actually does
The button performs a Steam-supported reset of locally cached download and configuration data. Steam discards that temporary state and obtains fresh data from its servers. This is aimed at problems such as downloads that stall or fail, and games that stop starting because the client’s cached download information is inconsistent.
The operation is global to the Steam client rather than limited to one title. It is therefore a reasonable first reset when several downloads behave incorrectly or Steam’s download activity appears out of sync. It is not a repair of a particular game’s installed files, and it is not a reset of Steam Cloud data.
What remains outside the reset
- Installed game content remains in the Steam library.
- Your Linux Steam installation and library folders are not removed by the client command.
- Steam Cloud account and game data are separate from the download cache.
The reset can make Steam ask for your credentials again because the client has discarded locally cached configuration needed for the current session. That sign-in request is expected, not evidence that a game or library was deleted.

Before you press the button
Close or pause active work
Let any important download, update, or file move finish, or pause it before starting. The reset is performed by the running client, so do not terminate Steam abruptly while it is applying the change. If Steam is busy with a disk operation, wait until the activity settles.
Know which problem you are trying to solve
Use this reset for a client-wide download or cached-configuration problem. If only one installed game is damaged, a game-file verification is narrower and avoids resetting unrelated download state. If Steam cannot use a library folder, repair that library instead. If downloads are consistently slow because of the selected server region, changing the download region addresses that cause rather than repeatedly flushing the cache.
Do not confuse cache with userdata
Steam’s Linux account and game-related userdata is stored under ~/.local/share/Steam/userdata. That directory is not the download cache. Deleting it can affect account- or game-related information, so leave it alone when your goal is only to clear cached downloads.

- Launch the Steam desktop client on Linux and wait for the main window to finish loading.
- Open the Steam menu in the client window.
- Select Settings.
- In the settings sidebar, open Downloads.
- Scroll to the bottom of the Downloads page and select Clear Download Cache.
- Read the confirmation prompt and approve the reset.
- When Steam restarts or presents the login screen, sign in to your Steam account again.
The menu wording can move slightly between Steam client releases. If a future release labels the page differently, look for the built-in cache-reset control on the client’s Downloads settings page; avoid substituting an unrelated storage or library command.

What to expect after the reset
The first launch
Steam may close and reopen, or it may return directly to account authentication. Enter the credentials for the account that owns the library. A new login is part of the supported process because the reset removes cached client configuration and Steam obtains it again from its servers.
Checking the original symptom
After signing in, retry the action that failed: resume the affected download, start the game, or open the library view that was malfunctioning. Test the smallest relevant action first rather than starting several large downloads at once. This makes it clear whether the cache reset changed the original behavior.
What the reset does not promise
Clearing the cache does not repair every possible installation problem. It will not correct damaged files in one game, a library-folder problem, or a server-region issue. If the same symptom remains, use the follow-up that matches its scope instead of repeating the global reset indefinitely.

Manual folder work has a larger failure surface: a mistyped path, a command run against the wrong Steam installation, or deletion while Steam is still running can create a separate problem. The graphical reset is preferable because Steam identifies the data to flush and reacquires it in the supported way.

Choose the right follow-up when clearing the cache is not enough
Steam’s installation and update guidance identifies three alternatives. Select one based on the symptom and the scope of the failure.

Verifying one game’s files
Choose the verification command for the affected installed title in Steam’s game-management controls. Run it only for the game showing the launch or file symptom, then wait for Steam to complete its check before testing the game again. Verification may reacquire files that do not match the expected installation; it is distinct from clearing the global cache.
Repairing a Steam library folder
Use Steam’s Repair Steam Library Folder action when the client identifies a library location, access, or installation-folder problem. Complete the repair while Steam is open and then retry the download or launch operation that originally failed. Do not substitute deletion of the library directory for a repair.

Changing the download region
If the failure follows a pattern of poor speed or an unreliable regional server, select a different download region in Steam’s download settings and retry. A region change is a network-routing choice; it does not replace file verification and does not remove installed games.

If the Downloads page does not look exactly like this
Client-version differences
Steam can revise its settings layout and labels. The supported concept remains the same: open the Steam client’s settings, locate the Downloads page, and use its built-in Clear Download Cache control. A changed sidebar position or slightly different capitalization does not justify deleting random directories.
When Steam will not stay open
If the client cannot reach the settings page, first address the immediate launch problem using Steam’s own installation or update guidance. Avoid deleting userdata as a diagnostic shortcut. If a manual cache-folder instruction is specifically required, exit Steam completely before touching appcache or depotcache, confirm that the path belongs to the Steam installation you are repairing, and understand that this is a more error-prone recovery step than the graphical command.
A practical decision workflow
- Identify whether the symptom is global (several downloads or shared client behavior) or limited to one game.
- For a global cached-download symptom, use Settings > Downloads > Clear Download Cache.
- Sign in again when Steam asks, then retry the original operation once.
- If one title still fails, run Verify Integrity of Game Files for that title.
- If Steam reports a library-folder problem, run Repair Steam Library Folder.
- If the main symptom is regional speed or server reliability, change the download region.
- Only consider manual cache-folder work when a specific Steam troubleshooting instruction calls for it, and never treat
userdataas disposable cache.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Deleting the wrong directory
Linux Steam files are spread across installation, cache, library, and userdata locations. A directory name that sounds temporary is not automatically safe to remove. The presence of appcache or depotcache in manual instructions does not make ~/.local/share/Steam/userdata an equivalent target.

The authentication prompt follows the cache reset by design. Sign in with the account that owns the library and allow Steam to rebuild its local configuration. The prompt alone is not a reason to reinstall a title.

Repeating a global reset for a local file problem
If only one game fails after the cache reset, continuing to clear the global cache does not narrow the diagnosis. Move to file verification for that game, or to library repair if Steam identifies the folder itself.
Expecting a speed guarantee
Steam does not publish a universal cache-size, reclaimed-space, or download-speed result for this operation. Any space recovered, time taken, or speed change depends on the installation and workload. Treat the reset as a troubleshooting action, not a performance benchmark.
Verification checklist
- You used the Steam client’s Downloads settings rather than deleting userdata.
- The confirmation prompt completed and Steam restarted or returned to authentication.
- You signed in again with the correct account.
- You tested the original download or launch symptom once after the reset.
- You selected verification, library repair, or a region change when the remaining symptom pointed to that narrower cause.
- You avoided manual folder deletion unless a specific Steam instruction required it and Steam was fully exited.
Bottom line
For Linux, the safe no-reinstall method is Steam’s own Settings > Downloads > Clear Download Cache command. Confirm it, sign in again, and then diagnose any remaining problem by scope: verify one game’s files, repair a library folder, or change the download region. Keep ~/.local/share/Steam/userdata out of this process.
