To clear Safari’s browsing history on a Mac, open Safari and choose History > Clear History, then select a time range. To remove cookies and other stored website data, go to Safari > Settings > Privacy > Manage Website Data and remove selected sites or all listed data. These are separate controls, so choose the one that matches what you want to remove.
Choose between clearing history and removing website data

Clear Safari browsing history for a time range
- Open Safari on your Mac.
- Choose History > Clear History.
- Choose how far back to clear in the pop-up menu, then confirm.
Apple says this can remove more than the visible list of visited pages. Depending on the selected period, it also clears related browsing records such as the back and forward list for open pages, frequently visited sites, recent searches, page icons, saved snapshots for open pages, the downloaded-items list, sites added for Quick Website Search, and sites that requested location or notification access. The downloaded files themselves remain on your Mac.
If Safari is set up with iCloud on your Mac and other Apple devices, clearing history on the Mac is reflected on those devices too. This does not clear history or records that a website maintains independently. See Apple’s history-clearing guide for its description of the effects.

Remove cookies and other website data
- Open Safari and choose Safari > Settings.
- Click Privacy, then click Manage Website Data.
- Select one or more websites and click Remove to delete their stored data, or click Remove All to remove all listed website data.
Removing site data can sign you out of websites or change how they behave. Apple also cautions that removing this Safari data may change or remove it in other apps. Apple’s guide to cache and cookies covers this control and its effects.
Fix a problem with one website without removing all site data
- Open the website in a Safari Private Window to see whether it works there.
- If it does, open Safari > Settings > Privacy > Manage Website Data.
- Select the affected website, click Remove, then reopen it in a normal window.
Have the site’s sign-in information available before removing its data, since you may need to log in again. Apple outlines this troubleshooting path in If Safari doesn’t work as expected on Mac.

Why the menu may say Preferences instead of Settings
Current Apple Mac instructions use Safari > Settings. On older software, the corresponding menu may be called Safari > Preferences; Apple’s troubleshooting guidance acknowledges both labels. The exact menu wording can vary by software version, and Apple’s cited instructions do not provide a complete version-by-version menu list.
