Google’s Gboard help pages do not document a dedicated button for clearing recently used emojis. On Android, try clearing Gboard’s cache first; if that does not help, clearing its storage or data resets the app more broadly, but Google does not guarantee that this removes the recent-emoji row. Google’s checked iPhone and iPad guidance does not describe an emoji-history reset.
Clear Gboard’s cache on Android first
Google recommends clearing Gboard’s cache as an Android troubleshooting step. This is the less extensive option to try before resetting app data. Android menu names vary by device, so the exact labels may differ.
-
Open your phone’s Settings app.
-
Tap Apps or Apps & notifications, then select Gboard. If you do not see it, search the app list or use Settings search.
-
Tap Storage & cache or Storage.
-
Tap Clear cache, then open Gboard’s emoji panel and check whether the recent-emoji row has changed.

Google’s Android Gboard troubleshooting guidance describes cache clearing as a general fix; it does not promise that this step clears recent emojis.
If that does not work, consider clearing Gboard storage or data
Clear storage or Clear data is a broader reset than clearing the cache. Google says it returns Gboard to its default state, so you may need to restore custom preferences afterward. It is not a command to erase only emoji history, and Google’s instructions do not guarantee that the recent-emoji row will be cleared on every device or Gboard version.

To find it, return to Gboard’s storage screen in Android Settings and choose Clear storage or Clear data, if your device offers that option. Consider the wider reset before proceeding, and check the emoji row afterward. A Google Android Community Product Expert suggested clearing cache and then storage for an emoji-related issue, while noting that clearing storage resets preferences; this is community advice, not an official guarantee or a documented recent-emoji workflow.
On iPhone or iPad, the documented controls do not confirm an emoji-history reset
Google’s Gboard guide for iPhone and iPad explains keyboard and emoji use, while its iOS troubleshooting guidance covers settings such as clearing the learned-word dictionary. The checked instructions do not say that clearing the dictionary removes recent emojis; learned words and emoji history are different. They also do not describe a dedicated control for clearing the recent-emoji list. Removing and re-adding the keyboard is not documented as a way to reset that list, so do not rely on it as a confirmed fix.

What to try if the recent emojis remain
If the row remains after Android cache clearing or a broader data reset, Google’s checked help pages do not provide a guaranteed next step for clearing it. The Android reset steps are general troubleshooting, not an emoji-specific promise. Google’s guides explain how to open the emoji panel and insert emojis on Android and iPhone and iPad, but do not document a clear-recent-emojis command.
