Clean a magnetic vehicle sign with water and mild detergent, wipe it gently with a soft cloth, and let it and the covered vehicle panel dry completely before reinstalling. Remove the sign before washing the vehicle, check beneath it regularly for grit or moisture, and store it clean, dry, flat, and away from heat. Follow the sign maker’s care instructions if they differ.
Clean the sign and the paint before reinstalling
- Lift the sign off. Peel it away by its edges instead of dragging it across the paint, which can stretch the sign or damage its corners. Signs.com’s maintenance guide recommends lifting rather than sliding.
- Wipe both sides gently. Use a soft cloth or sponge with water. If needed, use a mild detergent-and-water solution; a microfiber cloth is suitable but not required. Do not immerse or steam-clean the sign. Signs.com’s care instructions and FASTSIGNS’ maintenance advice support gentle cleaning rather than special chemicals.
- Clean the panel underneath. Remove dust, grit, and moisture from the vehicle surface as well as the sign’s magnetic side. Trapped particles can scratch paint, and trapped moisture can contribute to finish problems. Signs.com advises cleaning the vehicle surface and magnet before installation.
- Dry completely. Let both surfaces air-dry or use a clean, soft towel before putting the sign back. Reinstalling it while either surface is damp risks trapping moisture against the finish.
Remove magnetic signs before automated or manual car washing and before using a power washer. Water pressure or wash equipment can dislodge or damage a sign; do not rely on the sign staying attached. Signs.com and FASTSIGNS both advise taking signs off before washing.
How often should you remove and inspect a sign?
There is no single interval that applies to every sign and vehicle. Manufacturer recommendations vary: Signs.com’s care instructions call for frequent removal and say daily removal supports maximum longevity; its maintenance guide suggests wiping several times a week; Signs & More recommends weekly removal. Use the schedule supplied with your sign, and check it more often after rain, snow, or dirty road conditions.
Whenever you remove it, inspect the sign and the covered paint for dirt, moisture, discoloration, or clouding. FASTSIGNS UK recommends weekly checks for discoloration or clear-coat clouding. If you see a change in the finish, remove the sign and seek guidance from the vehicle or sign maker rather than covering the area again.

Choose a compatible place on the vehicle
Attach the sign only to a flat, smooth, magnetic metal panel. Avoid curves, protrusions, moldings, trim, and nonmagnetic surfaces such as aluminum or fiberglass. A refrigerator magnet can help check whether a panel is magnetic, but the sign maker’s installation directions take precedence. Signs.com’s care instructions explain these surface limitations.
Do not place a magnetic sign on uncured paint. Cure times depend on the paint and vehicle: Signs.com’s 2024 guide says a new paint job often takes 30–90 days to harden, while Signs & More recommends waiting at least 90 days. These are vendor recommendations, not a universal cure-time guarantee. Check with the vehicle manufacturer, paint provider, or sign maker before applying a magnet to freshly painted panels.

A clean sign used correctly on a suitable panel is less likely to cause problems, but no sign maker can guarantee every vehicle finish will respond the same way. Paint condition and trapped dirt or moisture matter, so keep checking the covered area instead of assuming it is protected just because the sign has not moved.

- Clean and dry it first. Put it away only after the sign is free of dirt and moisture.
- Prefer flat storage. Lay it on a flat, level surface in a cool or room-temperature place. Keep it away from direct sunlight, heat, and a hot vehicle.
- Do not fold or crease it. A crease can affect how the sign sits against a vehicle panel.
- Follow the maker’s advice about rolling. Some makers allow gentle rolling, while others discourage it. Because recommendations differ, use flat storage unless the instructions for your particular sign explicitly permit rolling.
- Protect it from pressure and abrasion. Do not place heavy objects on it. If stacking or placing it near other surfaces, use nonabrasive fabric between them.
These storage recommendations are consistent across care guidance from Signs.com, FASTSIGNS, and Signs & More, with rolling being the main point on which advice varies.
