The safest routine is simple: remove dust with a soft, dry brush or gentle air first; use only a barely damp, lint-free swab when dry cleaning cannot remove a mark; avoid solvents, detergents, bleach, wax and abrasive erasers; then store the figure in a shaded, stable, PVC-free environment. These steps protect paint, plasticizers, joints, decals and the long-term value of the piece.
Before you clean: identify the risks
A 7-inch figure may combine several materials: painted PVC or ABS parts, softer rubber, clear plastics, fabric, paper decals, die-cast metal, magnets and electronic components. A product that is harmless to one material can soften, cloud or stain another. Older or degraded plastics are especially vulnerable to mechanical and chemical damage, so conservation guidance recommends the least aggressive treatment that achieves the goal.
Gather a controlled workspace
- Work on a clean, low-dust table away from food, smoke, candles, sprays and household solvents.
- Wash and dry your hands. Remove rings, watches and bracelets that could scratch paint.
- Use a soft, clean sable-hair artist brush, a lint-free cloth or swabs, and low-pressure hand air. Avoid canned air that can eject liquid propellant or create forceful blasts.
- Have a clean tray for loose accessories and a camera or notebook for documenting the figure’s condition.
Handle the figure by strong areas
Support the torso, hips or other structurally robust sections rather than thin weapons, antennae, fingers, capes or decorative edges. Do not force a joint to open for cleaning. If an accessory is removable without resistance, take it off and clean it separately; leave tight, aged or glued parts in place.
Dry cleaning: the first-line method
The Canadian Conservation Institute (CCI) states that plastics may be cleaned, when necessary, by careful brushing, vacuum cleaning or dry wiping. For a collectible, gentle brushing is usually the most controllable option and introduces no liquid into seams.

Step-by-step dry dusting
- Place the figure on a soft, clean support so it cannot roll or fall. Keep small accessories in a labeled tray.
- Start at the top and work downward, using short strokes that lift dust away from the surface rather than grinding it into paint.
- Use the brush tip around sculpted texture, facial features, joint gaps and seams. Do not jab bristles into a hinge or peg socket.
- For loose particles in deep recesses, hold the figure so debris can fall out and use gentle hand-pumped air from a distance. Never use forceful air that can spin joints or drive grit under paint.
- Finish with a clean, dry microfiber or other lint-free cloth on broad, unpainted surfaces. Do not buff painted areas aggressively.
When a vacuum is appropriate
A conservation-style vacuum with controlled, low suction can collect dust near a figure while a soft brush loosens it. Keep the nozzle from touching the figure and use a mesh or screen over the opening so a loose part cannot be swallowed. A household vacuum used at full power is too risky for small accessories, decals and flexible parts.
Using water safely
Moisture is a second step, not a default. CCI recommends moist wiping when water is required, while warning that degraded plastics are more susceptible to damage. Water can migrate into joints, hinges, electronics, decals, fabric and hollow parts, where it may cause swelling, corrosion, staining or trapped moisture.
Test before treating the visible mark
- Choose an inconspicuous spot made from the same material and finish as the stained area, such as the underside of a foot.
- Dampen a lint-free swab or cloth until it feels barely moist, never wet enough to release a drop when squeezed.
- Touch the test area lightly, wait for it to dry completely and check for color transfer, gloss change, tackiness, whitening or softened paint.
- If any change appears, stop and seek advice from a qualified conservator. If the test is stable, proceed with minimal passes.
Minimal-moisture technique
Work on a small section at a time. Wipe lightly in one direction, rotate to a clean part of the cloth, and dry the area immediately with another lint-free cloth. Keep liquid away from moving parts, seams, decals, flocking, fabric and any electrical opening. Never immerse, rinse under a tap or leave the figure standing on a damp surface.
Use plain water only. Do not add dish soap, laundry detergent, disinfectant, glass cleaner or a “mild” household cleaner. Residues can remain in texture and alter the surface over time.

Products to avoid
CCI’s preventive-conservation instruction is explicit: “Never use solvents, bleaches, detergents, wax or vinyl and rubber erasers.” That prohibition covers routine cleaning of collectible plastics, not just severe cases.
- Alcohol and acetone: may dissolve or soften paint, clear parts, decals, adhesives and some plastics.
- Bleach and disinfectants: can discolor surfaces and attack polymers or metal fittings.
- Detergents and soap: leave surfactant residues and may penetrate aged or porous material.
- Melamine sponges and abrasive pads: remove a microscopic layer of the finish, which can erase paint or change sheen.
- Wax, polish and silicone products: create a film that attracts dust and can complicate future conservation.
- Vinyl and rubber erasers: can abrade paint and transfer their own ingredients.
- Commercial “plastic restorers”: are not automatically safe for mixed plastics, painted finishes or flexible parts.
Do not experiment with an organic solvent or surfactant solution on white, sticky or powdery material. The CCI warns that such products can penetrate plasticizer exudates and create future problems.
White bloom, stickiness and plasticizer exudation
PVC and rubber can release plasticizers or other components to the surface. The result may look like a white haze, oily film, powder or persistent tackiness. This is material failure or aging, not ordinary dust that can be polished away.

- Stop rubbing as soon as the deposit smears, returns quickly or exposes a different sheen beneath it.
- Blot loose material with a dry, lint-free cloth or use a very light dry wipe. Do not scrub.
- Photograph the condition and note the date, location and whether the deposit is spreading.
- Isolate the figure from neighboring objects so the residue cannot transfer.
- Ask a qualified conservator experienced with plastics for a treatment plan, especially if the figure is rare, signed, electrically powered or highly valuable.
Do not use alcohol, oil, detergent or solvent to chase the last trace of bloom. A glossy, apparently clean surface can conceal deeper migration or damage.
Cleaning special parts
Clear plastic
Clear visors, windows and lenses show scratches and clouding easily. Dust them with a soft brush, then use a barely damp swab only after testing. Do not polish, buff or use abrasive “scratch removers” unless a conservator has specified a compatible treatment.

Rubber, soft vinyl and flexible capes
Flexing can accelerate cracking or expose sticky degradation. Support the part rather than stretching it, and keep moisture out of folds. If it feels tacky or leaves residue on a glove, treat it as an exudation problem and stop after dry blotting.
Fabric, flocking and hair
Use dry brushing in the direction of the fibers. Avoid wet wiping, compressed air at close range and rubbing that can lift flocking or distort woven material.

Decals, stickers and printed details
Keep liquid away from edges, because moisture can loosen adhesive or carry ink. Dust around them with a soft brush rather than dragging a cloth over raised or peeling sections.
Electronic or battery-powered figures
Remove batteries only when the manufacturer’s procedure allows it and you can do so without forcing a brittle cover. Never introduce liquid into switches, speakers, seams or battery compartments. Corrosion or a leaking cell warrants specialist repair, not household cleaning.
Choosing a display case or storage container
“Clear plastic” is not a material specification. For long-term storage, identify the polymer. National Archives and Library of Congress guidance identifies polyethylene, polypropylene and polyester as stable enclosure plastics and advises avoiding PVC. Choose products that do not contain added slip or coating agents when that information is available.

Features that matter more than appearance
- A dust seal that does not press against the figure.
- Enough headroom and side clearance that weapons, wrists, ankles and capes are not under constant pressure.
- UV-filtering glazing or a location where direct and strong ultraviolet light cannot reach the figure.
- Materials and adhesives identified by the maker, rather than an unspecified “clear plastic.”
- Access for inspection and cleaning without repeatedly jostling the figure.
- Ventilation or monitored humidity control appropriate to the enclosure design.
Light, temperature and humidity
Control light exposure
Direct sunlight and strong ultraviolet sources accelerate fading and polymer degradation. Display the figure in shade, away from windows that receive direct sun, or use UV-filtering glazing where practical. Rotate highly light-sensitive pieces rather than leaving them permanently exposed.

Keep conditions stable
Rapid temperature and humidity swings stress mixed materials. National Archives home-storage guidance for media gives 55–70°F (about 13–21°C) and 30–55% relative humidity as an example range; it is not a failure-rate guarantee or a figure-specific standard. For a mixed-plastic action figure, stable moderate room conditions and avoidance of dampness matter more than chasing a precise number.
Do not store valuable figures in attics, garages or damp basements. These spaces commonly experience heat spikes, freezing, condensation or uncontrolled humidity.
Use humidity buffering carefully
In a sealed cabinet or case, silica gel can absorb or release moisture. National Archives guidance says the quantity must be customized and monitored. Place packets where they cannot touch the figure, add a hygrometer, and replace or regenerate the gel according to its manufacturer’s instructions. A sealed case is not maintenance-free: check the reading and the condition of the contents periodically.

Open display versus a sealed case

Choose the arrangement that lets you maintain clean air, shade, stable conditions and safe clearances. A poorly ventilated or overcrowded case is not automatically better than a clean, shaded shelf.

Positioning and handling for long-term preservation
- Support heavy figures at the feet and torso so ankle pegs and knees do not carry all the load indefinitely.
- Keep articulated joints in a neutral, unstressed pose when possible. Do not leave a limb pressed against a wall or accessory.
- Separate figures whose paints, soft plastics or residues could touch one another.
- Keep capes, weapons and thin parts from bearing the weight of the figure or case lid.
- Use inert, identified supports rather than unknown foams, soft vinyl liners or freshly manufactured materials with a strong odor.
- When moving the figure, secure loose accessories and support the body with two hands over a padded surface.
Inspection schedule and warning signs
Inspect the figure and its enclosure periodically; the interval should reflect the environment, value and known condition of the materials. Look for:
- New stickiness, oily film, white bloom or powder.
- Paint lifting, cracking, transfer or a change in gloss.
- Musty odor, visible mold or spotting.
- Yellowing or fading, especially on white, clear or brightly colored parts.
- Joint stress, leaning, warped accessories or pressure marks from supports.
- Condensation or a hygrometer reading outside the conditions you can safely maintain.
Photograph changes with the date and keep purchase records, provenance and prior repairs separately from the figure. Documentation helps a conservator distinguish an active problem from an old one.
What to do about mold
Dust and organic debris can nourish mold spores, and National Archives guidance emphasizes correcting humidity problems. If you see mold or smell persistent mustiness, do not brush the figure in the living area: brushing can spread spores.

Common mistakes that cause permanent damage
- Cleaning every figure on a routine schedule even when dry dusting is unnecessary.
- Using a cotton swab until it sheds fibers into a joint or textured recess.
- Applying pressure to remove a mark before testing whether the mark is actually paint loss or plastic degradation.
- Leaving a damp figure in a closed case.
- Storing a PVC figure in a PVC box or soft PVC liner because both items look clear.
- Placing the display beside a sunny window, radiator, heater vent or humidifier.
- Stacking boxes so their weight presses on blister plastic, capes, weapons or antennae.
- Assuming a sealed case eliminates the need for humidity readings and inspections.
When professional conservation is the right choice
Seek a conservator when the figure is rare or high-value, when paint is lifting, when a plastic has become sticky or brittle, when mold is present, or when an electronic, metal and plastic assembly has corrosion. Provide photographs, the figure’s known age and materials, previous cleaning attempts, storage history and the exact products already used. A specialist can test compatibility on the actual finish instead of guessing from the word “plastic.”
