Clean clear aligners every time you remove them, and clean your teeth before putting them back. Rinse trays immediately, brush both surfaces gently with a soft-bristle toothbrush, water and a small amount of toothpaste, then rinse thoroughly. Remove trays for every food or drink except plain water, keep them in their case, and replace or report any tray that is cracked, misshapen, painful or no longer fits.

Why aligner maintenance matters

Clear aligners sit against your teeth for most of the day, so food residue, plaque and drink pigments can remain trapped between the plastic and enamel if you put a dirty tray back in. A consistent routine protects the tray’s clarity, reduces unpleasant odor and helps you follow the treatment plan. Cleaning is maintenance, not a substitute for dental examinations, professional cleanings or the oral-hygiene instructions from your dentist or orthodontist.

Many treatment plans target 20–22 hours of daily wear, but that is a treatment-use recommendation rather than a universal rule. Follow the wear schedule prescribed for your specific case. Removing trays for meals and cleaning should fit within that schedule rather than becoming a reason to leave them out for long periods.

The daily cleaning routine

1. Remove the trays with clean hands

Wash and dry your hands before touching an aligner. Ease the tray off from the back teeth and work forward rather than twisting it sharply. If an edge catches on an attachment or feels unusually tight, do not force it; ask the treating practice for instructions.

2. Rinse immediately

As soon as you remove a tray, rinse it under cool or lukewarm running water. This loosens saliva and food particles before they dry. Do not use hot water: heat can distort the plastic and change the fit. Avoid wrapping a wet tray in a tissue or napkin, where it can be thrown away accidentally.

3. Store it in the correct case

Place the rinsed aligner in its applicable case whenever it is not in your mouth. Keep the case in a cool, dry location away from hot surfaces, harsh chemicals, young children and pets. A case protects the tray from contamination, crushing and loss. If your provider supplied a case, use it; buy a replacement or spare only when necessary.

4. Brush the aligner before reinserting it

Use a clean, soft-bristle toothbrush, water and a small amount of toothpaste. Gently brush the outside and inside surfaces, including the edges and areas around any attachments. Use light pressure: aggressive scrubbing or a hard brush can scratch the plastic. Rinse thoroughly so no toothpaste remains in the tray.

Clean both the tray and your mouth. After meals or snacks, brush and floss your teeth whenever possible before reinserting the aligner. If you cannot reach a toothbrush immediately, rinse your mouth and hold the tray under warm (not hot) running water, then perform the full cleaning routine as soon as you can.

5. Reinsert and check the fit

Seat the aligner fully with your fingers. Do not bite down on a hard object to force it into place. Check that it is not rocking, cutting your gums or leaving a new gap. A tray that suddenly feels loose, sharp or painful needs professional advice rather than repeated force.

What you can eat and drink with aligners in

Remove aligners before eating or drinking anything except plain water. The American Association of Orthodontists identifies tap water as the beverage considered safe while trays are in place. Take trays out for coffee, tea, alcohol, soft drinks, juice, sports drinks and other flavored or sweetened beverages. Even a drink that appears clear can leave sugar, acid or pigment between the tray and your teeth.

Item Tray position What to do before reinserting
Plain tap water May be consumed with aligners in Keep normal brushing and flossing appointments; rinse if the mouth feels coated.
Coffee or tea Remove aligners Rinse your mouth, brush when possible and clean the trays before replacement.
Alcohol, soft drinks or juice Remove aligners Rinse, brush and floss when possible; do not trap the beverage under the plastic.
Meals and snacks Remove aligners Brush and floss, then rinse and brush the trays before reinsertion.

Keep a small routine at work, school or while traveling: a toothbrush, floss, a water source and the case. If a meal occurs where brushing is impossible, rinse your mouth and the trays promptly and complete brushing at the first practical opportunity.

Which cleaning methods are appropriate?

The safest choice is the method specified by your treating clinician and the aligner manufacturer. Compare any product by whether it is approved for your particular system, whether its chemicals or temperature could dull or deform the plastic, how likely it is to scratch the surface and whether it is practical for your routine.

Method Use and limitations Risk or caution
Soft-bristle toothbrush, water and a small amount of toothpaste Daily manual cleaning of the inner and outer surfaces; rinse completely afterward. Use light pressure. A hard brush or vigorous scrubbing may scratch the plastic.
Manufacturer-approved cleaning product Use as needed and exactly as directed for the aligner system. Invisalign identifies its cleaning products as appropriate when needed. Do not assume a product made for another appliance is compatible.
Cool or lukewarm water rinse Use whenever trays are removed to clear loose residue. A rinse alone is not a replacement for brushing and oral hygiene.
Denture cleaner Do not use for clear aligners. Align Technology’s patient instructions warn that denture cleaners can dull the surface and make trays more visible.
Mouthwash soak Do not soak aligners in mouthwash. Manufacturer instructions specifically warn against this practice; ingredients can discolor or damage the plastic.
Hot water Do not use for rinsing, soaking or cleaning. Heat can deform the tray and compromise its fit.
Harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners Avoid unless your clinician and manufacturer explicitly approve the product. They may dull, scratch or chemically damage the plastic.

Never combine cleaning chemicals or improvise a stronger solution. If the written instructions for your aligner system differ from a general routine, the manufacturer’s directions and your treating clinician’s instructions control.

How often should you clean clear aligners?

At every removal

Rinse the tray and put it in its case. This prevents residue from drying while you eat or drink.

Before every reinsertion

Brush the tray gently and rinse it thoroughly. Brush and floss your teeth after meals or snacks whenever possible. This is the key point in the day because it prevents a recently eaten residue from being sealed under the plastic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

At bedtime

Perform a complete cleaning of both trays and your teeth before sleeping. Inspect the aligners under good light for cracks, sharp edges, cloudiness that does not rinse away or deformation. A clean tray that is damaged still needs attention.

When the tray looks or smells different

Do not mask an odor with mouthwash. Rinse, brush the aligner and clean the case. If the odor or cloudiness persists after proper cleaning, contact the treating practice; the cause may be residue, damage or an oral-health issue that needs assessment.

Cleaning and storing the aligner case

The case can transfer residue back to a clean tray. Hand-wash it with soap and water, rinse away all soap and let it dry completely. Clean it regularly and whenever it becomes visibly dirty or develops an odor. Do not put a wet tray into a damp, closed case for extended storage; allow excess water to drain and keep the case in a cool, dry place.

Carry the case whenever you leave home. A tray placed loose in a pocket, on a table or in a food container is easier to contaminate, bend or lose. Keep it away from hot cars, radiators, boiling water, cleaning chemicals and animals that may chew it.

Preventing odor, cloudiness and discoloration

When trays smell

  • Rinse them immediately after removal rather than letting saliva dry on the surface.
  • Brush the inside and outside gently with a soft-bristle brush, water and a small amount of toothpaste.
  • Brush and floss your teeth before reinsertion; residue on teeth can make a clean tray smell again.
  • Wash and dry the case with soap and water.
  • If the smell remains despite this routine, ask the treating clinician to evaluate the trays and your mouth.

When trays look cloudy

Rinse and brush first. Do not respond by using a denture tablet, mouthwash soak, bleach, solvent or hot water. These methods can dull or damage the surface. A persistent haze, roughness or sudden change in transparency should be reported, especially if the tray also feels different.

When trays become stained

Coffee, tea, alcohol and colored drinks can discolor a tray when it is left in during drinking. Remove the aligner for these beverages and clean it before putting it back. Do not try to polish stains away with abrasive toothpaste or a hard brush.

Inspect every tray for damage

Look at the aligner before insertion and again before bed. Pay attention to:

  • Cracks, particularly a crack roughly the height of a tooth or longer.
  • Sharp or jagged edges that irritate the tongue, cheeks or gums.
  • Warping, bends or other deformation.
  • A sudden change in fit, tracking or comfort.
  • Plastic that has split around an attachment or tooth area.

Do not continue using an aligner with a severe crack. Contact your dentist or orthodontist immediately and keep the damaged tray in its case so the practice can advise you. Do not trim, glue, heat or reshape it yourself. If a tray causes pain, will not seat, or appears to have changed shape, report the problem promptly even when no crack is visible.

A practical travel and work kit

Pack the items that make the routine possible away from home:

  • The current aligners and a clean, ventilated case.
  • A spare case if you are traveling for several days.
  • A soft-bristle toothbrush and a small amount of toothpaste.
  • Floss and access to plain water.
  • Any aligner-cleaning product specifically approved by your manufacturer or clinician.

Keep the case in your carry-on or personal bag rather than checked luggage. If the tray is lost, contact the treating practice for instructions; do not automatically advance to another tray or wear an old one without professional guidance.

Professional supervision and safety

Clear-aligner treatment should be prescribed and supervised by a licensed dentist or orthodontist. The American Association of Orthodontists states in its 2026 patient-safety statement: “The FDA has not authorized clear aligners that are sold directly to consumers without a prescription and supervision by a dentist or orthodontist.” Supervision matters when a tray cracks, stops fitting, causes pain or when treatment progress is uncertain.

This maintenance guidance is general information, not a diagnosis. Your clinician’s written directions and the manufacturer’s instructions take priority when they differ. Seek prompt dental advice for persistent gum irritation, significant pain, swelling, bleeding, a sharp edge, severe cracking, deformation or a tray that no longer fits correctly.
