After a hike, remove the laces and insoles, brush off loose dirt, clean the boots gently with water and a material-compatible footwear cleaner if needed, then let them air-dry at room temperature. Avoid machine washing and direct heat. Because “snow boots” can be made from different materials and constructions, follow the care instructions for your exact model if they differ from this general routine.

Clean snow boots after a hike

  1. Remove the laces and insoles. Set them aside to dry separately so air can circulate inside the boots. Nikwax recommends removing both before drying; see its footwear-care guidance.
  2. Brush off loose dirt first. Use a soft brush and gentle strokes to lift trail dirt, dried mud, and loose snow residue before adding water. REI recommends brushing gently in its guide to cleaning hiking boots.
  3. Wash only as much as needed. For routine cleanup, use water. If stubborn dirt remains, use a footwear cleaner labeled as compatible with your boot’s materials and follow its directions. REI cautions against bar soap and household detergents because additives can harm leather or waterproof membranes. Its listing says Nikwax Footwear Cleaning Gel works on suede, nubuck, and smooth-finish leather; check your own boot’s care guidance before using any product.
  4. Rinse thoroughly with clean water. Remove cleaner and loosened dirt without soaking the boots more than necessary. Do not machine-wash them: REI warns that a washing machine can damage hiking boots.

Dry the boots without damaging them

Open the boots wide and let them dry slowly at room temperature, away from direct heat and sunlight. Do not put them on a radiator or use a hair dryer. Nikwax warns that excessive heat can irreversibly damage leather and harm footwear adhesives; its footwear-care guidance recommends removing the laces and insoles before drying.

If the boots are soaked, loosely stuff them with newspaper to draw out moisture, replacing the paper whenever it becomes damp. A fan can help move air around them, but keep it at room temperature rather than using heated air. Let the laces and insoles dry separately before putting the boots back together.

Care for leather and waterproof materials appropriately

Cleaning, conditioning, and restoring water repellency are separate tasks. A waterproof membrane does not mean the outer material never needs cleaning: clean membrane areas, and use treatments only where appropriate for the boot’s exterior. For boots with mixed materials, follow the maker’s instructions for each area.

PEET Original Portable Electric Boot & Shoe Dryer, Silent & Always-On
  • SILENT, ALWAYS-ON DRYING: The Original PEET uses a patented DryPort system to gently warm and circulate air through AirChambers and DryPorts - no fans, no noise. Uses less electricity than a low-wattage light bulb. Leave it plugged in 24/7 and wake up to dry, ready-to-wear footwear every morning.
  • DRIES MOST FOOTWEAR OVERNIGHT: Safe, gentle airflow reaches the inside of shoes and boots to remove moisture and eliminate odor without damaging materials. Ideal for work boots, hiking boots, athletic shoes, sneakers, and outdoor footwear. For boots taller than 11 inches, add 12-inch DryPort Extension attachments (sold separately).
  • EXPAND YOUR DRYING SYSTEM: Compatible with PEET Helmet DryPort, Glove DryPort, Mitten DryPort, and 12-inch Boot Extension attachments (all sold separately) to dry helmets, gloves, and tall boots on the same base. Helmet DryPort fits ski, bike, hockey, motorcycle, and snowmobile helmets.
  • SAFE ON ALL MATERIALS: Gentle heat is safe for leather, rubber, neoprene, vinyl, canvas, synthetics, fleece, and microfiber. Preserves your investment in quality footwear by eliminating the moisture that causes mold, mildew, odor, and premature material breakdown.
  • PROUDLY MADE IN USA: PEET has been drying footwear since 1955. The Original comes with a 25-year warranty - register within 10 days of purchase. 120V US standard plug; 240V configurations available. Specs: 36W | 9.5"L x 9.5"W x 22"H | 2.5 lbs.
  • Full-grain leather: If it becomes dry or cracked, leather conditioner may be appropriate. Use a product intended for the boot’s leather and follow the manufacturer’s directions.
  • Suede or nubuck: REI says these materials do not require conditioning. Use a cleaner or water-repellent treatment specifically suited to suede or nubuck if needed.
  • Waterproof membrane areas: Clean the fabric as directed rather than applying a leather treatment to the membrane.

REI’s leather boot care guidance and boot waterproofing guidance distinguish care by material. The exact boot maker’s instructions take precedence, especially for insulated or unusually constructed snow boots.

When to restore water repellency

Do not reproof boots automatically after every hike. A practical cue is when water no longer beads on the outer material and instead begins soaking in. Choose a treatment compatible with the boot material and apply it according to its label; some products call for clean, damp boots, while others have different directions.
