Remove your hiking insoles as soon as you get home, brush off loose dirt, and let them air-dry separately from your boots. Clean them only by the method approved for that exact insole, and put them back only when both the insoles and footwear are fully dry.
What to do first after a wet hike
- Take the insoles out. Pull them from the boots so air can reach both the footbeds and the inside of the footwear. Salomon and AKU both recommend removing insoles after a wet outing (Salomon; AKU).
- Shake or brush away loose mud. Use your hand or a soft brush as needed; avoid scrubbing until you have checked the care guidance for the specific insole.
- Check the insole’s care label or manufacturer guidance. Cleaning methods differ by product and material. If you cannot confirm that washing is allowed, do not assume that soaking or machine washing is safe.
Choose the cleaning method for your insole
There is no universal washing rule for hiking insoles. For example, Superfeet recommends handwashing its insoles with mild soap and warm water, gentle brushing with a soft-bristle toothbrush if needed, rinsing, and blotting excess water with a soft towel. It specifically says not to machine-wash or machine-dry them (Superfeet).
| Manufacturer guidance | Method stated for its products |
|---|---|
| Superfeet | Handwash with mild soap and warm water; brush gently if needed, rinse, and remove excess water with a soft towel. Do not machine-wash or machine-dry. (Superfeet) |
| Vionic | Wipe with a damp cloth; its care FAQ advises against submerging its products. (Vionic) |
| HAIX | Its footwear guide allows cold, delicate machine-washing for the removable insoles covered by that guide. This is a product-specific exception, not general permission for hiking insoles. (HAIX) |
| Feelgrounds | Care depends on the insole material; its guidance says the PU insole should not be fully submerged. (Feelgrounds) |
These examples apply to the products named by each manufacturer. Follow the instructions for your own footbed rather than transferring another brand’s method to it. Salomon’s hiking-shoe guidance says its insoles can be rinsed or washed, while HANWAG’s boot-care guide recommends wiping leather insoles with a damp cloth (Salomon; HANWAG).
Air-dry the insoles and boots safely
Leave the removed insoles in a well-ventilated place and allow them to dry naturally. Salomon recommends a ventilated drying place and cautions against sun or excessive heat; Superfeet also says to air-dry its insoles away from heat sources. HANWAG warns against drying footwear on or next to heat or in direct sunlight (Salomon; Superfeet; HANWAG).
#1 Best Overall
- Hiking Insoles for Men and Women: The arch is medium and cushioned, not stiff. They are soft enough for comfort over ten miles, but firm enough to keep your foot steady on rocks and roots. You will really notice the difference on long downhills
- Up to 56% Shock Absorption: When you carry a full pack, every step can feel heavier. Our shock layer takes in up to 56% of impact before it reaches your knees and lower back, so you stay comfortable all day
- Up to 47% Energy Return: The arch returns up to 47% of the energy you put into each step, rather than just absorbing it. It also helps take pressure off your knees when you walk downhill. By the end of a long day, your legs will feel the difference
- Dry Feet on Tough Climbs: A breathable cover and non-sweat layer pull heat and moisture away from your skin, keeping your boots drier on steep climbs and in warm weather. Wet feet cause blisters, and this helps prevent them
- Sized for Men and Women who Hike: Use the size chart to find your fit. Place your boots' insoles on top and trim around the front for an exact fit. These insoles are light enough for trail runners and tough enough for backpacking boots
Do not use a radiator, heater, or other intense heat to speed the process. Salomon’s care guidance says, “Do not leave them to dry in the sun or near a source of excessive heat like a radiator.” Its warning concerns its footwear-care instructions; check your own manufacturer’s directions for any additional restrictions.
When to put the insoles back
Wait until the insoles and the inside of the boots are completely dry before reinserting the footbeds. Salomon and AKU both give this advice (Salomon; AKU). Drying time depends on the conditions and product; the manufacturer guidance cited here does not establish a universal number of hours.

- Arch support insoles help protect feet, knees & lower back from shock

If the insoles still smell
First make sure the insoles and footwear have had a chance to dry fully. AKU says persistent odor may improve with better drying and occasional footbed replacement, but it does not prescribe a universal replacement interval (AKU). If replacement becomes necessary, choose a footbed compatible with your boot and fit.
