Clean a smart ring gently, follow the cleaning-agent instructions for your exact model, and dry it thoroughly before wearing it again. Oura and Samsung both recommend cleaning the sensor area about once a week, but they do not give the same advice about soap: Oura permits mild soap and water, while Samsung’s U.S. Galaxy Ring instructions prohibit soap and specify soap-free detergent for rinsing.
How often should you clean a smart ring?
Clean the sensor area regularly. Oura recommends cleaning its interior infrared LED sensors approximately once a week. Samsung says to clean the Galaxy Ring sensor at least once per week because foreign material may interfere with biometric detection. These are manufacturer care recommendations, not a guarantee of a particular improvement in readings.
Use a clean, soft cloth; Samsung specifies a soft cloth and recommends a soft, lint-free cloth for contamination. A microfiber cloth is one option, but a clean, soft cloth you already have is sufficient. Oura also says a piece of cloth or the inside of a T-shirt can be used. Oura’s care instructions and Samsung’s Galaxy Ring cleaning instructions describe their respective methods.
Choose a cleaning method for your ring model
Do not assume that a cleaner approved for one smart ring is safe for another. The manufacturers’ directions differ, particularly on soap.

Oura’s care page covers titanium Oura Ring 5, Ring 4, and Gen3, as well as Ring 4 Ceramic. Its polishing pad is only for exterior scuff removal on ceramic models; it is not for cleaning sensors. Check Oura’s current care instructions for your model before using a liquid or accessory.
Clean and dry the ring safely
- Check the manufacturer’s instructions. Find the support page for the precise brand and model before selecting a cleaner. Do not apply Oura’s soap guidance to a Galaxy Ring or Samsung’s detergent guidance to another brand.
- Wipe the sensor area gently. Use a clean, soft cloth, without abrasive scrubbing. A soft lint-free cloth is optional, not a special required accessory.
- Use liquid only if the instructions allow it. Oura allows mild soap and water. Samsung’s US instructions call for soap-free detergent and say not to use soap or cleaning agents. Follow the specific directions rather than combining or averaging them.
- Rinse as directed, then dry thoroughly. Samsung UK advises rinsing with clean water after exposure to liquids other than clean water, including soapy water, oils, sunscreen, sanitizer, and cosmetics. Oura also advises thorough drying after cleaning. Samsung UK’s materials and wearing guidance covers this exposure advice.
- Put the ring back on only when it is dry. Oura advises against trapping moisture beneath the ring for an extended period. Samsung warns that residue from soap, detergents, sanitizer, or cleaning agents may irritate skin.
Cleaning methods to avoid
For the Galaxy Ring, Samsung explicitly says: “Never use external heat sources, ultrasonic waves, soap, cleaning agents, abrasive materials, or compressed air to clean the ring.” That rules out common jewelry-cleaning approaches such as ultrasonic cleaners and abrasive brushes for this model.

For other smart rings, do not assume those methods are safe just because the Galaxy Ring warning names them. If your product’s instructions do not approve a method, stick to gentle wiping and the cleaner guidance confirmed for that model. Avoid treating alcohol or a general-purpose jewelry cleaner as universally safe: the cited manufacturer instructions do not establish that they are suitable for all smart rings.

Samsung says foreign material may interfere with biometric detection, which is why its guidance calls for regular sensor cleaning. The cited manufacturer instructions do not quantify an accuracy improvement from cleaning, so a clean ring should not be treated as proof that a particular reading is correct. If readings remain unexpected after you have cleaned and dried the ring according to its instructions, consult the manufacturer’s troubleshooting guidance for your model.
