Cleaning can remove fingerprints and loose dirt from a PS2 disc, but no cleaning, polishing, or resurfacing can make original PlayStation 2 disc software compatible with a standard PS5. Sony states that PlayStation, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation 3 software cannot be played from a disc on PS5. Clean the disc only for use in hardware that supports PS2 media, and never insert cracked, warped, or repaired media into a PS5.
Check compatibility before attempting any repair
The first question is not whether the disc has scratches. It is whether the console is designed to run that format. A disc edition PS5 has an optical drive, but the drive does not provide backward compatibility for original PS2 game discs. Sony’s PS5 Safety Guide says: “PlayStation® format software, PlayStation®2 format software, and PlayStation®3 format software cannot be played from a disc.” That is a platform restriction, not a disc-condition problem.
| PS5 hardware or media | What Sony documents | What it means for a PS2 disc |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 with a disc drive | Supports PS5 and PS4 Blu-ray game discs, 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, standard Blu-ray, and DVD formats listed in the safety documentation. | An original PS2 game disc remains unsupported even if its surface is perfectly clean. |
| PS5 Digital Edition | Has no optical-disc drive. | There is no disc slot in which to test or cleanly insert any physical game. |
| PS4 backward compatibility on PS5 | Sony Interactive Entertainment said in 2020 that more than 99% of more than 4,000 PS4 games were playable on PS5. | This figure concerns PS4 compatibility. It does not establish support for PS2 discs. |
Therefore, a PS5 message such as “unsupported disc” is expected when the inserted media is an original PS2 game. Cleaning may improve the disc’s condition for another compatible console, but it cannot change the disc format or add PS2 emulation to the PS5 disc drive.

Cleaning, repairing, and resurfacing are not the same thing
| Action | What it can do | What it cannot do |
|---|---|---|
| Surface cleaning | Remove fingerprints, dust, and other loose contamination from the readable surface. | Fill a gouge, replace missing material, or change PS5 compatibility. |
| Polishing or household abrasion | May alter the surface layer. | It is not a Sony-endorsed repair method in the manufacturer guidance and can leave the disc harder to read. |
| Professional resurfacing | Removes a controlled layer of plastic in an attempt to make a damaged disc readable by compatible hardware. | It cannot make PS2 software supported by PS5, and Sony warns against using repaired discs in the console. |
| Replacement or re-release | Can provide a playable copy through a format and platform that officially support the game. | It does not restore the original disc itself. |
Sony notes that scratches and dust can make discs unplayable. That warning describes readability on hardware that supports the disc type; it does not override the separate PS2-format restriction on PS5.
Cleaning is the least expensive and least invasive option because it requires only an appropriate cloth. A professional service costs more and permanently changes the disc, so it makes sense only when the original is worth preserving and the intended player is compatible with PS2 media. A replacement or official re-release may cost more than a cloth but avoids risking the original. Compare every option on four points: compatibility, risk to hardware, total cost, and whether preserving the original matters more than simply playing the game.
How to clean a scratched PS2 disc safely
Use this procedure when you want to preserve or test the disc on a compatible PlayStation 2 or another device that officially supports that media. Sony’s support guidance specifies a lint-free cloth made for Blu-ray Discs or DVDs and a center-to-edge motion.
- Prepare a clean work area. Wash and dry your hands, clear grit from the table, and place the disc label-side down only on a soft, clean surface. Abrasive particles under the disc can create additional marks.
- Hold the disc by the edge or center hole. Keep fingers off the data surface while you examine it. Oils from fingerprints can add a new layer of contamination after cleaning.
- Use the right cloth. Choose a clean, lint-free optical-disc cloth intended for Blu-ray Disc or DVD cleaning. Do not substitute a paper towel, tissue, rough household rag, or material that can shed fibers.
- Wipe in straight strokes. Starting at the center hole, wipe directly toward the outside edge. Repeat with a clean section of the cloth. Do not scrub around the disc in a circular path; Sony’s instruction is specifically to wipe from the center toward the edge.
- Use light pressure. The purpose is to lift contamination, not grind the surface. If a mark remains after gentle passes, stop and inspect it rather than applying more force or adding an abrasive liquid.
- Inspect under bright light. Look for radial or deep gouges, cracks that reach the center hole, warping, separation, or damage to the label side. A clean appearance does not make structurally damaged media safe for a console.
- Test only on compatible hardware. After cleaning, place the disc in a PlayStation 2 or another device documented to support that PS2 title. A PS5 cannot be used to prove that a PS2 disc has been successfully repaired.
Cleaning should be a single, gentle maintenance step, not a repeated polishing session. If the cloth picks up visible grime, use a clean section rather than redistributing it. Never pour liquid directly onto the disc, soak it, or attempt to scrape a spot with a fingernail or tool. The manufacturer-backed process is intentionally limited: a suitable lint-free cloth and straight wipes from the center hole to the edge.
Keep the disc in its case after testing. Store it vertically, away from heat, moisture, and direct sunlight, and avoid stacking loose discs with their readable sides rubbing together. Keep the original case and any title or region information with the disc; that information helps you identify an official replacement or re-release later.
When you must not insert the disc
Do not test a disc in a PS5 if it has any of the conditions in Sony’s safety warning. The guide says, “Do not use the following discs. If you do, the console may be damaged.” In particular, do not insert media that is:
- Cracked, including a crack that starts at the center hub or outer rim.
- Deformed, warped, bent, or otherwise unable to lie flat.
- Repaired, including a disc that has been resurfaced or otherwise modified.
A scratch across the readable surface and a crack are different risks. Gentle cleaning is reasonable for loose dirt; a structural defect is a reason to stop. Never try to flatten a warped disc with heat, weights, or pressure, and never glue a split disc back together for console use.

Also stop if the label is lifting, bubbling, or visibly damaged. The disc can be mechanically unsafe even when the transparent side looks acceptable. Do not assume that a repair shop’s successful test guarantees safety in a different drive. Sony’s warning is about using cracked, deformed, or repaired media in the PS5, so the conservative choice is to keep such a disc out of that console.
Will toothpaste, baking soda, or polishing compound fix a PS2 disc?
Toothpaste and household abrasives
No official Sony source in the manufacturer guidance endorses toothpaste, baking soda, metal polish, or another household abrasive for optical discs. These products can create a pattern of fine scratches, leave residue, or remove material unevenly. Because a PS5 does not support PS2 disc software in the first place, an abrasive treatment has no path to making the game launch there.
Solvents, sprays, and heat
Avoid solvents, window cleaner, unapproved sprays, hair dryers, hot water, and other heat-based treatments. They can attack labels, coatings, adhesives, or the disc’s shape. The manufacturer-backed method is limited to a suitable lint-free cloth and straight wipes from the center hole to the edge.
Machines and do-it-yourself resurfacing
Resurfacing is a different operation from cleaning: a machine or service removes a layer of the plastic to reduce the effect of scratches. It may be considered only when the intended playback device supports the PS2 format and the service explains its own limits. It is not a way to add compatibility to PS5, and Sony’s warning about repaired discs means a resurfaced disc should not be put in the PS5 drive.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Ask a service what condition it accepts, whether it guarantees a read on a compatible PS2, and what happens if the disc cannot be restored. A service cannot replace missing data, fix a crack, or promise that every title will become readable. Do not pay for resurfacing merely to overcome an “unsupported disc” message on PS5; that message is caused by format support, not surface dirt.
How to tell whether a failure is the disc or a compatible console
If the goal is to diagnose a PS5 drive rather than play the PS2 game, use a known-good supported disc. Sony’s support flow recommends testing another game, Blu-ray, or DVD after cleaning.
- Clean the PS2 disc as described above, but do not use it as the PS5 test. Its format is unsupported regardless of condition.
- Choose a known-good supported disc. Use a PS5 or PS4 Blu-ray game, a Blu-ray movie, or a DVD that is known to work in another compatible player.
- Insert the supported disc into a PS5 with a disc drive. If it loads, the drive is responding and the original PS2 disc’s unsupported format explains the earlier message.
- Try a second supported disc if necessary. One damaged test disc cannot distinguish a media fault from a drive fault.
- If multiple supported discs fail, follow PlayStation’s troubleshooting flow and contact PlayStation Repairs. Do not continue experimenting with cracked, deformed, or repaired discs.
A Digital Edition PS5 cannot participate in this test because it has no optical drive. Use compatible hardware with an optical drive for the PS2 disc itself. Keep the test controlled: change one variable at a time, use discs known to work elsewhere, and record whether the console recognizes, spins, or ejects each supported disc. This prevents an unsupported PS2 format from being mistaken for a failing PS5 drive.

Choose the next step based on your actual goal
| Your goal | Recommended action | Main limitation or risk |
|---|---|---|
| Remove fingerprints or dust | Use a lint-free Blu-ray/DVD cloth and wipe center to edge. | Only surface contamination is addressed; deep damage remains. |
| Play the original game | Use a PlayStation 2 or another platform that officially supports that PS2 title and disc. | Cleaning does not make the PS5 disc drive compatible. |
| Check whether a PS5 drive works | Test multiple known-good supported PS5/PS4 Blu-ray games, Blu-ray discs, or DVDs. | Do not use a PS2 disc as the diagnostic test. |
| Preserve a badly scratched original | Ask a professional optical-disc service whether resurfacing is appropriate for compatible hardware. | Service results depend on the disc’s condition, and Sony warns against repaired discs in PS5. |
| Play without risking the original | Use an officially supported re-release, digital version, or replacement medium when one is available for your region and title. | Availability varies by game, region, and platform; it is not a repair of the original disc. |
The cheapest option is usually careful cleaning with a suitable cloth, but it is useful only for contamination. Professional resurfacing is a paid preservation gamble, while a replacement or re-release shifts the cost toward obtaining another copy. None of these choices changes the PS5’s supported-format list. Decide whether the priority is the original collectible, reliable play, or diagnosing the console, then choose the option that addresses that priority directly.
Why a resurfaced PS2 game still will not work on PS5
Resurfacing changes the physical surface. It does not change the data format recorded on the disc, install PS2 system software, or alter the PS5’s supported-format list. The PS5 safety documentation separately identifies supported optical formats and then excludes PlayStation, PS2, and PS3 software from disc playback. A resurfaced PS2 disc therefore has two independent issues: it may remain unreadable because of damage, and it remains an unsupported PS2 disc even if the surface becomes readable on older hardware.
There is also a hardware-safety issue. Sony’s warning covers discs that have been repaired, so a resurfaced disc should be reserved for compatible hardware unless the console manufacturer explicitly says otherwise. Do not treat a successful read in a PlayStation 2 as approval to insert that same repaired disc into a PS5.
This distinction also explains why a seller’s claim that a disc was “tested” is incomplete. Ask which console read it and whether the disc was modified. A successful test in compatible PS2 hardware establishes only that that particular player could read it; it does not establish PS5 compatibility or safety.
Troubleshooting common situations
“My PS5 says the disc is unsupported.”
Confirm the disc’s format first. If it is an original PS2 game, the message is consistent with Sony’s documented compatibility limitation. Cleaning will not change that result. If it is supposed to be a supported PS5 or PS4 Blu-ray game, inspect it for dirt or damage, clean it with the approved cloth method, and test another known-good supported disc.

Cleaning removes contamination but cannot reverse deep gouges, label-side damage, cracks, or deformation. Inspect the disc and, if it is structurally sound, ask a professional service whether it can be resurfaced for use in compatible hardware. Do not use a repaired disc in the PS5.
“A scratched disc works in one console but not another.”
Different consoles can have different optical-drive condition and format support. A successful read on compatible hardware does not establish PS5 support. Use the known-good supported-disc test to evaluate the PS5 drive independently.

“I have the PS5 Digital Edition.”
That model has no optical-disc drive, so physical-disc cleaning cannot create a way to use the PS2 game on it. Look for a supported digital or re-release option for the specific title and region instead.
“Can I clean the disc while it is inside the PS5?”
No. Remove the disc and clean it by hand with the lint-free cloth method. Never insert a cloth, liquid, or cleaning tool into the drive. The PS2 disc is unsupported even when clean, and a damaged or repaired disc can pose a mechanical risk.

“Will a perfect-looking disc work if the PS5 recognizes other DVDs?”
Not necessarily. DVD playback and supported PS4 or PS5 game formats do not imply support for PlayStation 2 software. Use the PS5’s supported-disc test only to assess the drive, not to infer PS2 compatibility.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Preserving the game without damaging the console
If the original disc is valuable, make preservation the priority. Clean it gently, document its condition, and keep it in protective storage. For severe but non-structural scratches, a professional resurfacing service may be worth asking about when the intended player is compatible with PS2 media. Request the service’s guarantee and compatibility limits before authorizing any work; resurfacing is not risk-free and does not authorize PS5 use.
If the objective is simply to play, the safer route is a platform, official re-release, or replacement medium that explicitly supports the title. Availability is title- and region-dependent, so verify support for the exact game rather than assuming that a PS4 backward-compatibility claim applies to PS2 software.
Keep receipts or service notes with a resurfaced disc, and label it as repaired so nobody later assumes it is suitable for a PS5. If a title has a digital edition or official re-release, confirm that it is the same game and region you want; a general statement that a platform supports many older games is not proof for one specific PS2 title.

What is Sony’s recommended way to clean a scratched disc?
Use a clean, lint-free cloth made for Blu-ray Discs or DVDs and wipe in straight strokes from the center hole toward the outer edge.
Will toothpaste fix a PS2 disc?
There is no Sony endorsement for toothpaste or household abrasives. They can leave residue or create more scratches, and they cannot add PS2 support to a PS5.
Can I put a resurfaced PS2 disc in my PS5?
No. Resurfacing is a repair, and Sony warns against using cracked, deformed, or repaired discs because they may damage the console. A resurfaced disc also remains PS2 software, which PS5 cannot play from a disc.
How do I test whether my PS5 disc drive works?
Use multiple known-good supported PS5 or PS4 Blu-ray games, Blu-ray movies, or DVDs. Do not use an original PS2 disc as the test.
Does the PS5 Digital Edition read PS2 discs?
No. The Digital Edition has no optical-disc drive, and cleaning cannot create a physical-disc pathway.
Is professional resurfacing worth the cost?
It may be worth asking about for a valuable, structurally sound disc intended for compatible PS2 hardware. Results depend on the damage and the service, and it does not make the disc safe or playable in PS5.
The Bottom Line
Clean a PS2 disc only with a lint-free Blu-ray/DVD cloth, wiping from the center outward. That can remove dirt, but it cannot make PS2 software playable on PS5. Keep cracked, warped, and repaired discs out of the PS5, and use compatible hardware or an official re-release to play the game.
