Turn the Game Boy off, remove the Game Pak, inspect its edge connector, and clean only with Nintendo’s approved dry methods. Do not blow on the contacts, use alcohol or another solvent, add liquid, force the cartridge, or open the cartridge or console. Then test a second known-good Game Pak: one failing game points mainly to that cartridge, while several failing games point to the console’s connector or reading circuit and justify service.
What to do first when a Game Boy game will not start
A blank screen, a Game Boy logo that never advances, or a game that returns to the title screen can result from a poor connection rather than a permanently damaged system. The safest first response is a controlled inspection, not repeated reinsertion or aggressive cleaning.
- Power the system completely off. Do not remove or insert a Game Pak while the Game Boy is on.
- Remove the Game Pak without twisting it. Keep the cartridge in its normal orientation and do not force it out.
- Inspect the edge connector. Look for lint, dust, corrosion, residue, or another foreign object on the row of contacts.
- Clean externally using the dry method described below. Keep every liquid away from the cartridge and console.
- Reinsert the Game Pak fully and correctly. It should seat without unusual resistance.
- Test another known-good Game Pak. This comparison is the quickest way to separate a cartridge fault from a console-reading problem.
If the same reading error remains after those checks, stop experimenting. Nintendo’s Game Boy support guidance directs owners to customer support or a repair centre for unresolved errors and says not to attempt internal repair of Game Boy components.

A Game Boy reads a cartridge through the cartridge’s edge connector. The metal contact surfaces must meet the console’s internal connector in the correct position. Dust, foreign material, oxidation, residue, or an incompletely seated Game Pak can interrupt that electrical connection. The result may be a blank display, a logo that freezes, a message saying the game cannot be read, or a game that starts only after several attempts.

Connection problems are not proof that the console is defective. The pattern across multiple cartridges matters more than a single failed boot. Nintendo UK’s Game Reading Error guidance states that when the problem occurs with a single game, the fault is in that game cartridge rather than the console. Conversely, if several known-good games fail after correct insertion and connector cleaning, the console’s reading path or connector becomes the stronger suspect.
Safe cleaning materials and methods
Nintendo’s stated precautions
Nintendo’s Game Boy Family Game Pak precautions say not to clean with “benzene, paint thinner, alcohol or any other solvent.” The same guidance says not to disassemble the Game Pak or Game Boy components, touch the connector contacts, blow on them, or allow them to get wet. It recommends regularly using the Game Boy Cleaning Wand to help prevent edge connectors from becoming dirty.
Nintendo’s game-reading support guidance also identifies a soft, dry cloth as a way to clean dirty game connectors. These instructions are deliberately conservative: use a dry tool, avoid introducing chemicals, and do not open the hardware.

Materials to use
- A Game Boy Cleaning Wand, used according to its instructions, is Nintendo’s named preventive tool.
- A clean, soft, dry, lint-free cloth is the alternative specifically described for a dirty game connector.
- A bright light helps you inspect the connector without touching the contacts.

Step-by-step: clean a Game Boy cartridge
1. Shut down and prepare a dry workspace
Turn the Game Boy completely off. If it is connected to external power, unplug it before cleaning. Work on a clean, dry surface with enough light to see the cartridge edge. Never clean while the system is running.

2. Remove and inspect the Game Pak
Remove the cartridge in the normal direction. Hold it by its plastic shell rather than the edge connector. Examine both sides of the connector for visible lint, dust, residue, or foreign material. Do not rub the contacts with a bare finger; Nintendo’s precautions say not to touch them.
3. Use the Game Boy Cleaning Wand or a soft dry cloth
Follow the Cleaning Wand’s own handling directions and make gentle passes over the connector area. If you do not have a wand, use a soft, dry, lint-free cloth. The goal is to lift loose material, not polish the metal aggressively. Do not add water, solvent, cleaner, or lubricant.
4. Inspect again
Use the light to check that no lint or cloth fibers remain. If you see corrosion, deep scratches, a bent edge, cracked plastic, or contamination that does not come away with a dry pass, do not escalate to scraping or liquid. Those conditions are reasons to seek service.

With the Game Boy still off, insert the Game Pak in the orientation intended for the model. Push it in fully but gently. Never force a cartridge that does not align or seat normally.

6. Power on once and observe
Turn the system on and note exactly what happens: normal start, blank screen, frozen logo, reading-error message, or a return to the title screen. A precise symptom makes later support or repair diagnosis easier.
Keep liquid away from the Game Boy
Nintendo’s general care instructions for handheld systems say to power off and unplug before cleaning, never pour liquid directly on the product or submerge it, and make sure it is completely dry before use. Apply that rule to the entire setup, not just the cartridge. Do not spray a cloth over the console, drip cleaner into the cartridge slot, or use a damp item that could transfer moisture into the connector.
If liquid has already entered the cartridge or console, stop using it and do not power it on to “test” it. Leave internal drying and inspection to a qualified repair service; opening the unit yourself conflicts with Nintendo’s instruction not to attempt internal repair of Game Boy components.

The most useful diagnostic is a comparison with a Game Pak that is known to work in a compatible Game Boy. Test it only after the system is off and the original cartridge has been removed safely.

A single successful boot does not prove that a cartridge or console is healthy. If a game repeatedly fails, freezes, or requires pressure, record that behavior and treat it as an unresolved hardware issue instead of continuing to cycle the cartridge.
Troubleshoot by symptom
Blank screen immediately after power-on
- Power off completely and remove the Game Pak.
- Check for visible foreign material and clean the connector only with a dry approved method.
- Reinsert fully in the correct orientation without force.
- Try a known-good Game Pak.
If the known-good game also produces a blank screen, the console’s reading path needs attention. If the known-good game works, concentrate on the original cartridge.
Game Boy or Game Boy Advance logo appears, but the game does not load
Nintendo UK has a separate support topic for the situation in which the Game Boy Advance logo appears but the game does not load. Use the same safe sequence: power off, remove the Game Pak, inspect and dry-clean the connector, reinsert correctly, and compare with another known-good game. Do not interpret the appearance of the logo as permission to open the unit or use solvent.
Reading-error message
A reading error commonly warrants checking insertion, orientation, and visible contamination first. Once those checks and the dry cleaning step are complete, test another cartridge. If the error affects multiple games, Nintendo’s guidance supports contacting customer support or a repair centre rather than attempting internal repair.

Game starts, then freezes or resets
Intermittent contact can produce a start followed by a freeze, but the symptom alone does not identify whether the cartridge or console is responsible. Compare the same console with another known-good Game Pak and avoid moving, pressing, or partially removing the cartridge while powered on. Persistent instability should be professionally inspected.
Cartridge will not seat normally
Stop immediately if the Game Pak catches, enters crookedly, or requires unusual force. Confirm that no foreign object is in the slot and that the cartridge shell is not cracked or swollen. Do not file plastic, bend the connector, or insert tools into the console. Service is safer than forcing a damaged part.

External cleaning is appropriate for visible, removable material and a basic connection check. It cannot repair a broken cartridge board, damaged contact plating, a deformed console connector, liquid damage, or an internal electrical fault. Nintendo’s support direction is to stop and contact customer support or a repair centre when reading errors remain after the basic checks.

Signs to stop home troubleshooting
- Multiple compatible games fail after correct insertion and dry connector cleaning.
- The connector has corrosion, deep scratches, bent contacts, or a broken shell.
- The console or cartridge has been exposed to liquid.
- The cartridge must be held, twisted, or pressed for the game to run.
- You are considering solvent, abrasive cleaning, disassembly, or a tool inside the cartridge slot.
What to tell a support or repair technician
Provide the Game Boy model, the cartridge or cartridges tested, the exact on-screen symptom, whether a known-good game works, and whether the unit has experienced liquid exposure or physical impact. Explain that the Game Pak was inserted only while powered off and that you used a dry external cleaning method. This information helps the technician distinguish a cartridge-specific fault from a console connector or reading-path fault.
Prevent future reading problems
- Turn the Game Boy completely off before every insertion or removal.
- Store Game Paks in a clean, dry place with their shells protected from dust.
- Handle cartridges by the plastic shell and avoid touching the edge connector.
- Keep food, drinks, sprays, and other liquids away from the handheld and cartridges.
- Use the Game Boy Cleaning Wand regularly as Nintendo recommends, while keeping the cleaning process dry.
- Never force a Game Pak or use a cartridge that does not align normally.
These habits reduce contamination and mechanical stress, but they cannot guarantee that an old cartridge or console will never fail. Age-related damage and defects require service rather than stronger cleaning.

A practical decision path
- Is the Game Boy powered off? If not, turn it off before touching the cartridge.
- Does the cartridge show removable foreign material? If yes, use only the dry approved method.
- Does it insert fully and correctly without force? If no, stop and arrange service.
- Does the original game start after cleaning? If yes, monitor it; if not, continue to the comparison test.
- Does a known-good Game Pak start? If yes, the original cartridge is the stronger suspect. If no, the console’s reading path or connector needs service.
- Is there liquid, corrosion, structural damage, or a need for internal work? Stop home troubleshooting and contact support or a repair centre.
This process deliberately favors reversible inspection over actions that can permanently damage contacts. There is no published official success rate or average repair time for these checks, so a persistent problem should be judged by the symptom pattern and comparison test, not by an expected number of cleaning attempts.
