Cleaning can remove soot, flux and some corrosion, but it cannot restore carbonized laminate, missing copper, failed components or damaged insulation. Disconnect every power source, document the damage, clean in stages, then test the board before any controlled power-up.

Safety: Mains and high-voltage boards can retain lethal energy. Remove batteries, unplug equipment, allow capacitors to discharge and verify safe voltage before handling. Alcohol is flammable, so work with ventilation away from sparks and hot tools.

Identify what “burnt” means

Appearance Likely condition What cleaning can do
Loose black powder Soot or carbon dust Usually removable
Amber or brown sticky film Flux or burnt flux Needs a compatible solvent; IPA may only redistribute it
Green, blue or white deposits Corrosion or electrolyte residue Remove deposits, then inspect for lost metal and leakage
Darkened solder mask Heat discoloration May be cosmetic, but test insulation and copper
Hard, black, brittle laminate Carbonized fiberglass/epoxy Cleaning is not enough; remove and repair or replace
Cracked package, lifted pad or melted connector Component or conductor damage Requires repair or replacement

Carbonized material can remain conductive and cause leakage or arcing. A board that looks clean can still have hidden damage under packages, inside vias or in multilayer construction.

Tools and solvents

  • Electronics-grade 90–99% isopropyl alcohol (IPA), when materials are compatible.
  • Manufacturer-approved flux remover for residues IPA cannot dissolve.
  • Soft, ESD-safe brush; use a stiffer brush only on robust bare-board areas.
  • Lint-free swabs or wipes, nonconductive pick, controlled vacuum or low-pressure clean air.
  • Microscope, inspection camera or illuminated magnifier.
  • Multimeter, ESD-safe work surface and grounding equipment.

Choose a solvent that is nonconductive, noncorrosive and compatible with plastics, elastomers, labels, connectors, displays, adhesives and conformal coatings, as advised in FDA cleaning guidance. High-purity IPA is not universally safe: additives, moisture, coatings and trapped liquid matter. Follow the product SDS.

Use aqueous or deionized-water cleaning only when the flux and assembly are specified for it, followed by thorough rinsing and drying. Ultrasonic cleaning is not automatically safe for assembled boards; it can loosen components and damage crystals, MEMS devices, speakers, microphones, relays, displays, batteries or coatings. Avoid tap water as a final rinse, household cleaners, bleach, vinegar, ammonia, WD-40, unapproved acetone, metal tools and abrasive sandpaper.

Step-by-step PCB cleaning

  1. Make it safe. Unplug the equipment, remove removable and accessible internal batteries, wait for discharge and measure hazardous capacitors where appropriate. Do not clean an energized board.
  2. Photograph everything. Capture the complete board, burn area, component markings, IC pin 1, connectors, cable routing, jumpers and lifted or missing parts.
  3. Inspect dry under magnification. Look for soot, flux, corrosion, cracked solder, exposed or lifted copper, delamination, carbonized laminate, melted plastic, cracked packages and swollen capacitors. Do not gouge the board to test whether black material is dirt.
  4. Remove loose debris. Vacuum carefully or use low-pressure clean air directed away from connectors, sockets, switches, relays and shield openings.
  5. Clean a small area first. Put the board on a solvent-compatible ESD surface. Apply solvent to the brush or swab rather than flooding sensitive parts. Work from clean material toward the contamination with light strokes.
  6. Lift, do not spread, residue. Replace dirty swabs frequently and move dissolved material toward an absorbent lint-free wipe. If the first pass redistributes flux or soot, rinse with fresh solvent or a compatible flux remover. A publicly mirrored excerpt of IPC-7711/7721 describes wet soft-bristle scrubbing, a fresh IPA rinse, blotting and visual inspection; verify procedures against the licensed current edition at IPC.
  7. Dry completely. Use clean, low-pressure air and allow evaporation time. Check under packages, shields, sockets, connectors and switches for trapped liquid.
  8. Inspect both sides again. Remove fibers, loose carbon and solder splashes; check for migrated contamination, hairline cracks, lifted pads and exposed copper.

Cleaning IC legs and pins

Flux residue

Under magnification, apply a small amount of compatible flux remover or IPA. Brush parallel to the pin rows, not forcefully sideways between pins. Lift dissolved residue with a lint-free swab, rinse with fresh solvent and inspect for bridges, dull solder, corrosion and lifted pads.

Light oxidation

Try solvent and gentle wiping first. If mechanical help is essential, use a specialized soft contact tool only on accessible metal. Do not abrade gold plating or aggressively thin gull-wing leads.

Corrosion

Cleaning removes deposits but does not restore lost metal, plating, vias or bond connections. Check each affected lead, its pad and the next circuit node for continuity and leakage. A lead that is eaten through, blackened or loose usually warrants an IC, socket, jumper or specialist repair rather than more polishing.

Package-specific precautions

  • Through-hole: Use a narrow soft brush, avoid repeated bending and inspect the underside for bridges and pad damage.
  • SOIC, TSSOP and QFP: Use magnification, fresh solvent and parallel strokes; verify adjacent-pin isolation with a meter.
  • BGA: Surface cleaning cannot inspect solder balls beneath the package. Contamination or burn damage under it generally requires professional rework.
  • Sockets and connectors: Visible cleaning may not reach internal contacts. Replace heat-damaged or melted parts and check contact tension.
  • Gold-plated pins: Prefer solvent and gentle wiping; replacement is normally more reliable once plating is gone.

When black laminate needs repair

If the dark region is hard, brittle and carbonized rather than loose soot or flux, remove power and obstructing components, then expose enough surrounding laminate and copper to define the damage. Check traces, vias and possible internal-layer damage. A justified low-voltage repair may require removing all char, repairing conductors with an appropriate jumper or approved method, and restoring insulation with suitable board-repair material. IPC identifies dedicated procedures for conductor and laminate repair in its rework and repair standards.

Do not paint over char or cover it with solder mask and assume the board is safe; concealed carbon can continue leaking or arcing. Multilayer, mains, medical, automotive-safety and other high-consequence boards are usually replacement or specialist-repair candidates.

Tests before applying power

  • Measure resistance between each main power rail and ground.
  • Check continuity through burnt traces, fuses, connectors and repaired conductors.
  • Check for shorts between adjacent IC pins and continuity from pins to pads or vias.
  • Test suspect diodes, MOSFETs, transistors and capacitors.
  • Confirm isolation between repaired conductors and nearby power or ground areas.
  • For valuable repairs, add insulation-resistance testing at an appropriate safe voltage.

A normal resistance reading does not prove insulation integrity at operating voltage. If tests pass, use a current-limited bench supply for the first startup, monitor voltage and current, and watch for abnormal heating with touch kept clear or with a thermal camera. Identify and correct the original cause—such as a shorted semiconductor, failed capacitor, overload, connector resistance, surge or wiring fault—before trusting the board.

Clean, repair or replace?

Choose Typical evidence
Clean only Superficial soot or flux; intact laminate, copper, pads and components; normal electrical tests.
Repair Small accessible open trace or pad; char can be completely removed; insulation can be restored and verified; low-voltage, non-safety-critical use.
Replace or obtain specialist repair Carbonization in multilayers, damaged vias, melted connectors, multiple failed parts, persistent leakage, unresolved shorts or high-consequence equipment.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming “99% alcohol” cleans every flux chemistry or is safe for every coating.
  • Scrubbing fine-pitch pins with a hard toothbrush, knife, screwdriver or sandpaper.
  • Blowing soot under packages or using high-pressure air on fragile parts.
  • Using an ultrasonic cleaner without checking every component and coating.
  • Powering the board before solvent has evaporated.
  • Assuming no-clean flux never needs removal; IPC notes that residues can still affect reliability and may require cleaning (IPC explanation).
  • Treating battery electrolyte as ordinary soot or flux; identify the battery chemistry and contamination before selecting a process.
