How to Claim and Install Free-to-Play Games on Xbox

On Xbox One, open Home → Store, then browse Top free games or Browse games. Select a game and use the free or Install option shown on its Store page. The offer on that specific listing determines whether your account can install it.

Install a free game on Xbox One

1. From Home, open Store.
2. Browse Top free games or select Browse games.
3. Choose a game and review its Store listing, including its compatibility information.
4. Select the free or Install action shown on the listing and follow any on-screen prompts.
5. Make sure you are signed in with the Microsoft account you want associated with the game’s user license.

Microsoft’s documented console route is for Xbox One. The current screen-by-screen menu sequence for Xbox Series X|S is not established here, so use the Store interface on your console and check the game’s own listing rather than assuming the Xbox One steps apply unchanged. What “free” and “Install” mean

A Store game may be offered with a free-to-use entitlement that displays Install without requiring a purchase transaction. That does not guarantee the offer is available to every account: eligibility can depend on market, user group, and a defined time period. Check the current button and terms on the individual game listing. Microsoft Learn’s free-to-use guidance, last updated May 12, 2026, explains these entitlement conditions.

Choose the account and device carefully

Microsoft’s digital-goods rules describe both device-based and user-based licenses for Xbox One and Xbox Series games. A user license is associated with the Microsoft account, so claim or install while signed in to the account that should hold that license. Device availability also depends on the title: Xbox Play Anywhere applies only to participating games. Check the listing for the devices it supports before installing. Installing on a Windows PC

On Windows, Microsoft’s Store support guidance says to select Gaming and find downloads in My Library. This is general Store guidance, not a complete current walkthrough for every game in the Xbox PC app. Check the game listing to confirm it supports the Windows device you plan to use.
