Open the DLC’s live Steam Store page while the offer is active, confirm that the price is genuinely zero (not merely discounted or part of a Free Weekend), and use the page’s claim, add-to-account, play, or install control while signed in to the Steam account you want to keep. Then open the base game in your Library, check its DLC management screen, and install or enable the item. Ownership and installation are separate: a claimed DLC license can remain yours even if its download finishes later, while a Free Weekend grants temporary access rather than a permanent DLC or game license.
Use the Store page’s displayed end date and time as the authority. Promotions can change or disappear when their window closes, so do not rely on a social-media post, an old screenshot, or a countdown copied elsewhere.
What counts as free, limited-time DLC?
Steam uses several kinds of promotions that can look similar in search results. Before clicking anything, identify which one you are being offered. A permanent DLC giveaway adds a license to your account; a discount lowers the purchase price but still requires payment; a demo or trial provides limited access; and a Free Weekend temporarily unlocks a game package. Only the first category is free-to-keep downloadable content.

Valve’s Steamworks documentation describes free weekends as time-limited promotions that let players temporarily access and play an eligible game for free. That is different from a free-to-keep DLC entitlement. Treat the wording on the current Store page—not the headline of a deal post—as the deciding evidence.

Check the offer before you claim it
Open the live Store listing
Navigate to the DLC’s current Steam Store page while the promotion is still active. A search result, wishlist notification, or external deal page can be stale. The live listing is where Steam shows the applicable price, eligibility, and end time.
Read the price and button wording
Confirm that the price is shown as zero and that the page offers a control such as Claim, Add to Account, Play, or Install. A percentage-off badge, a crossed-out price, or a button that opens a checkout is a sale, not a free claim. A Play button can also indicate temporary access, so inspect the surrounding description for Free Weekend or trial language.
Record the exact deadline
Note the date and time printed on the Store page. Offer windows are specific to the individual promotion and can change. Do not assume that “ends today” means the end of your local calendar day, and do not substitute a publisher’s announced date for the time Steam displays on the listing.

Check account and base-game requirements
Stay signed in to the account that should own the content. Some DLC requires ownership of a particular base game or edition. If the game is shared, installed through another account, or owned in a different Steam library, the DLC may not activate for the account you are using. Verify the base game’s ownership before you claim, especially when the Store page says the DLC requires it.
Step-by-step: claim the DLC before the deadline
- Sign in to the correct Steam account. Use the desktop client or the Steam website and check the account name before proceeding. Claiming on a different account cannot be moved simply by installing the game on your preferred account.
- Open the current DLC Store page. Use the page linked by the promotion or search for the exact DLC title in Steam. Make sure the listing is the item you intend to claim, rather than a soundtrack, bundle, demo, or similarly named sequel item.
- Verify that the offer is truly free. Look for a zero price and a claim or add-to-account action. If Steam presents a payment total, a percentage discount, or a checkout screen, stop and decide whether you actually want to purchase it.
- Read the eligibility and deadline text. Check whether ownership of the base game, a region, or a particular edition is required. Capture the displayed end date and time in your notes if the offer is close to expiring.
- Select the claim, add-to-account, play, or install control. Follow Steam’s confirmation screen until it reports that the item has been added or is ready to install. Do not close the page at the first click if Steam is still processing the entitlement.
- Wait for the confirmation state. The page should change from a claim prompt to an owned, in-library, or install state. If the page continues to show the original price, refresh it once and verify that you are still signed in to the intended account.
- Open the base game in Library. Select the game associated with the DLC. The game must be installed, or at least owned, according to the DLC’s requirements; claiming the add-on does not necessarily download the entire base game.
- Open DLC management. Use the game’s gear icon and DLC section, or right-click the game in Library and choose
Properties > DLC. Steam Support identifies these as the places to manage downloadable content. - Enable or install the item if needed. If the DLC is listed but unchecked, enable it. If Steam offers an install action, select it and allow the download to finish. Keep the client online until the download and any file validation complete.
- Launch the game and check its content menu. Many add-ons appear through an in-game menu, a new map or character selector, an inventory tab, or a campaign list. Some cosmetic or story DLC does not display a separate desktop shortcut.
Do you have to install the DLC before it expires?
Normally, no. The important deadline for a free-to-keep offer is the moment Steam adds the DLC entitlement to your account. Steam’s documentation explains that free and paid DLC can be registered through a key or purchased from the Steam Store; once owned, DLC is treated as part of the game and Steam automatically updates it and installs it when the game is installed.
That means you can claim the item while the price is zero and download it later, provided the Store transaction completed successfully. Installation before the deadline is still sensible when you have a slow connection, limited disk space, or an event that might change eligibility. A download that starts before the deadline but never completes is not proof of ownership; check the account’s DLC list or the Store page’s owned state.

Do not confuse a pending download with an unclaimed item. If the DLC is visible in Properties > DLC after the offer ends, it is associated with your account even if its files are not yet present. If it is absent and the Store no longer offers the zero-price claim, Steam does not promise retroactive eligibility.
Where to find claimed DLC in Steam
Library DLC section
Open Library, select the base game, and use the gear icon or the game’s DLC section. The list shows the downloadable packages associated with that game. A checked item is enabled for installation; an unchecked item may be owned but disabled. Select the package and let Steam apply the change.
Properties menu
Right-click the game, choose Properties, and open DLC. This view is useful when the game page does not expose a prominent DLC button. It also separates the add-on’s entitlement from the game’s installed files, making it easier to tell whether you own content that has not downloaded yet.

Bonus files such as soundtracks and artbooks
Soundtracks, artbooks, manuals, and similar extras may not appear as in-game features. Steam Support says bonus files can be located through Properties > Local Files > Browse. In the folder that opens, look for the relevant audio, image, document, or bonus-content directory. The exact folder name and file format depend on the publisher’s package.
Claimed, installed, and playable are different states
Use these three checks separately:
- Claimed or owned: Steam has attached the DLC license to your account. This is the state a limited-time giveaway must reach before its deadline.
- Installed: The package’s files have been downloaded to the library where the base game is installed. An owned item can remain uninstalled.
- Available in-game: The game recognizes the package and exposes its maps, missions, characters, cosmetics, or bonus files. Some games require a restart, a profile refresh, or progression to a particular point before content appears.
Checking only the game’s menus can give a false negative when the add-on is installed but hidden behind a campaign, inventory, or extras screen. Checking only the Store page can give a false positive if you are looking at a similar item on a different account. Confirm ownership in Steam’s DLC management view, then verify the files and the game’s own content screen.

A Free Weekend is a temporary game package, not a free-to-keep DLC claim. During the event, Steam can let you download and play the eligible game. When the event ends, Steam removes the free package from the Store page. Participants may retain the game’s library listing and can uninstall the files, but continued play requires buying the full version.

Use the following test before assuming an event will stay in your account:
- If the page describes a Free Weekend, free trial, or temporary play period, treat access as expiring.
- If the page shows a zero-price DLC and an add-to-account or claim action, look for the resulting owned state.
- If the offer is a bundle, determine whether it contains a permanent DLC license or merely grants temporary access to the included game.
Installing a Free Weekend package before its end does not convert it into a permanent license. The expiration applies to the entitlement, not just to whether the files remain on your drive.
Troubleshooting when the DLC is missing

What to do when the deadline is close
Prioritize the entitlement rather than the download. Sign in, open the live listing, verify the zero price, and complete the claim confirmation before spending time clearing disk space. Then capture the owned state in the Store page or DLC list. After that, install the package at a convenient time.

Multiple clicks do not extend the promotion and can make it harder to tell which account received the license.
For future offers, a simple personal checklist prevents most losses: watch for the exact end time, open the live Steam page, distinguish permanent DLC from Free Weekend access, claim with the correct account, and verify the item under the base game’s DLC settings. Deal-alert or promotion-tracking services can be useful, but their notifications are not proof that an offer is still active; always confirm on Steam itself.
