Claim a PS Plus Monthly Game before the calendar month ends by adding it to your library. You do not have to finish downloading it that day. Once redeemed to your PlayStation Network account, the game remains in your library while your PS Plus membership is active. This is different from a Game Catalog title: Catalog games are temporary, and a download does not preserve access after Sony removes the title.
The important distinction: Monthly Games versus Game Catalog
“PS Plus games” can mean two different benefits. Your next step depends on which one you are looking at in the PlayStation Plus hub.

Monthly Games are a redemption benefit. A Catalog game is a rotating service entitlement. Installing both types may look identical on your console, but the licenses are not the same. Sony describes redeemed PS Plus games this way: “For PlayStation Plus games you have previously redeemed to your PSN account, those games will still remain as part of your game library as long as you are a PlayStation Plus member.”
For Catalog content, Sony gives the opposite warning: “Similar to PlayStation Now, if the content is no longer offered on PlayStation Plus, you won’t be able to access the titles when they leave the service.” Downloading before the removal date does not turn that title into a permanent redemption.

How to claim a Monthly Game on PS5
Use the PS5’s PlayStation Plus area while the current monthly lineup is still displayed. The key action is Download, which also adds the entitlement to your account. If you want to postpone the installation, use the library method described below instead of waiting until the lineup changes.
- From the PS5 Games home screen, scroll right to PlayStation Plus.
- Open the Benefits tab.
- Select Monthly Games.
- Highlight the game you want before the current calendar-month lineup changes.
- Select Download.
The console begins installing the game and records your PSN account’s entitlement. You can pause or cancel the download if you need storage space, then start it later from Game Library, provided your PS Plus membership is still active.
If you do not want to download it yet
Do not ignore the offer simply because your internal storage is full. Add the Monthly Game to your library during its offer period. The redemption is the preservation step; completing the download immediately is not required. Afterward, find it under Game Library and download it when you have room.

The PS4 labels the entry point differently from the PS5, but the result is the same: select the month’s game and add it to your library before the offer changes.
- Press the controller’s PS button to open the function screen.
- Scroll right and select PlayStation Plus.
- Choose Monthly Games.
- Highlight the title you want.
- Select Add to Library, then choose Download if you want to install it immediately.
Selecting Add to Library is sufficient to redeem the Monthly Game. A later download can be started from Library after the game has left the front-page lineup, as long as the membership that supplied the benefit has not expired.

Claim games remotely from a web browser or the PlayStation App
PlayStation supports starting Monthly Game downloads remotely through a web browser or the PlayStation App. This is useful when you are away from the console or want a game ready when you return.
Before using a remote download
- Sign in with the same PSN account that is used on the target console.
- Make sure the PS5 or PS4 is linked to that account and able to receive remote commands.
- For a download to begin, the console must be online and configured for the relevant rest or standby behavior; if it is completely powered off, the command cannot reach it.
- Check that the console has enough free storage. A remote command cannot complete an installation that has no space.
Remote-claim workflow
- Open the official PlayStation Store or PlayStation App and sign in.
- Find the current PlayStation Plus Monthly Games lineup.
- Open the game’s product page and choose the option to add or claim it for your PS Plus account.
- Choose Download to Console or the equivalent remote-download command and select your PS5 or PS4.
- Check the console’s downloads or notifications when you are back at it.
The account entitlement is the part that must occur before the lineup changes. If the app shows the game as already in your library, it has been claimed; the console can install it later from the library.
How to download a Game Catalog title
Game Catalog access is available to Extra and Premium members. Unlike a Monthly Game, Catalog content remains playable only while Sony offers that title through the service and your membership includes the Catalog.
PS5 Game Catalog steps
- Open the Games home screen and scroll right to PlayStation Plus.
- Open Benefits, then choose Game Catalog.
- Select an eligible game.
- Choose Download and select the desired edition or platform when the product page presents more than one.
You can also locate an installed or previously downloaded Catalog game in Game Library. That shortcut does not change the license type: it remains Catalog access, not a permanent redemption.
PS4 Game Catalog steps
- Open PlayStation Plus from the PS4 function screen.
- Select Game Catalog.
- Highlight an eligible title.
- Choose Download.
Catalog availability can differ by country, and the listing itself is the practical indicator of whether a title is currently included for your account. Extra and Premium membership is required for the respective Catalog benefit; Essential membership alone does not provide Game Catalog access.

What happens when a game leaves the lineup?
A Monthly Game you redeemed
Once you add a Monthly Game to your library during its offer month, the entitlement remains associated with your PSN account while you have an active PS Plus membership. You may download it later, delete and reinstall it, or move between a PS5 and PS4 version when the entitlement includes both. The month’s front-page tile disappearing does not remove a previously redeemed Monthly Game from your library.

A Game Catalog title you downloaded
A Catalog download is not a claim. When Sony removes that game from the Catalog, the service license no longer authorizes it and the installed copy can stop launching. Deleting and reinstalling it will not help after removal, because the entitlement has ended. To continue playing, purchase the game or wait for it to return to the service. Sony confirms the loss of access but does not promise a return schedule.
When your membership tier changes
Moving from Premium or Extra to Essential removes access to Game Catalog and Classics Catalog content because those benefits require the higher tiers. Monthly Games you already redeemed remain tied to your account, but they still require an active PS Plus membership. A renewal, upgrade or downgrade does not convert a Catalog title into a redeemed Monthly Game.

Streaming an eligible Catalog game
Streaming can avoid a large download, but it is not a way around Catalog expiration. If a streamed title leaves the service, its service access ends just as it would for an installed copy. Sony lists a minimum broadband requirement of 5 Mbps for eligible Game Catalog streaming. That is a minimum technical threshold, not a guarantee of consistent image quality or low latency; household traffic, Wi-Fi conditions and distance to the service can affect the experience.

Where streaming is offered for your account and region, open the eligible title in the Game Catalog and choose the streaming option rather than Download. If no stream button appears, the game, plan, platform or region may not support streaming for that title.
A reliable monthly claiming routine
Use this routine whenever the new Monthly Games announcement appears. It prevents the common mistake of assuming that downloading is the only way to claim a title.
- Open the PlayStation Plus Monthly Games page on the console, web or app.
- Review every title in the current month’s lineup, including games you cannot install immediately.
- For each game you want, select Add to Library, Claim or the console’s equivalent download command.
- Open Game Library and verify that the title is listed as owned or included with PS Plus.
- Start large downloads later, after checking storage and your network schedule.
- Before the next monthly change, repeat the check for any title you missed.
Do not confuse a game’s appearance in a recommendation row with a completed redemption. Verify the library entry or the account’s purchase/download state. A Catalog listing that says Download is not evidence that the game has been permanently claimed.

The game no longer appears in Monthly Games
If you did not add it to your library before the month changed, the normal redemption period has ended. Search your library and transaction history first; if the title is absent there, a later download is not available through that expired Monthly Games offer.
The game is in the library but locked
Check the PSN account and membership status. A redeemed Monthly Game requires an active PS Plus membership. If your subscription lapsed, renew it or purchase the game. On a console, restoring licenses can also refresh a valid entitlement after an account or system change, but it cannot restore a Catalog game that Sony has removed.

The download button is unavailable
Confirm that you are signed into the account that claimed the game, that the membership tier qualifies, and that the title is still offered in your region. For a Catalog game, check whether it has left the service. Also check storage space, pending downloads and parental-control restrictions.
The remote download did not start
Confirm that the app or browser is using the same PSN account as the console, the console is linked and online, and its rest-mode settings permit network features. A full drive, a console that is powered off rather than in a network-capable rest state, or a different target console can prevent the command from completing.
The game launches an expiration or membership message
Identify whether it is a Monthly Game or a Catalog title. A Monthly Game should work after membership is restored if it was redeemed earlier. A Catalog title may be unavailable because Sony removed it, even if it was downloaded; in that case, only purchasing it or a future return to the service provides continued access.
Quick answers to common timing questions
Do I have to download a Monthly Game before it leaves?
No. You must claim or add it to your library before the monthly lineup changes. Downloading can happen later while your PS Plus membership remains active.
Can I claim it from my phone?
Yes. The PlayStation App supports remote Monthly Game downloads, and PlayStation also supports starting downloads from a web browser. Sign in to the PSN account used by your console and verify the game appears in your library.
Do downloaded PS Plus Catalog games stay forever?
No. A downloaded Catalog game can stop working when Sony removes it from the service. Installation does not create a permanent license.
What is the safest thing to do on the last day?
Claim the Monthly Game immediately from the console, app or web browser, then verify it in Game Library. If you are dealing with a Catalog game, check its stated availability and do not assume that downloading preserves access.
