How to Download a Free Open-World RPG with PlayStation Plus

You can claim a PlayStation Plus monthly game at no additional charge while your membership remains active. On PS5, open PlayStation Plus → Benefits → Monthly Games, choose the game, and select Download. On PS4, open PlayStation Plus → Monthly Games, select the title, choose Add to Library, then select Download.

For an open-world RPG listed in the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog, you need PlayStation Plus Extra or Premium. Choose Game Catalog from the PlayStation Plus area, open an eligible title, and download it. Catalog games are included only while your membership is active and the title remains available in your country.

What “free” means with PlayStation Plus

“Free” in PlayStation Plus means that the game has no separate purchase price while it is included in your membership benefits. You still need a PlayStation Network account, a supported console or the PlayStation App or a web browser for remote downloads, and an active subscription.

There are two different entitlements:

Monthly Games: Sony rotates this selection each month. Once you claim a monthly game, it is added to your library and remains playable for as long as the Plus membership on that account stays active.
Game Catalog: Extra and Premium members can download games from a changing catalog. A catalog title can leave on a published removal date, so adding it to your library does not create permanent ownership.

That distinction determines which subscription tier you need and what happens later if the membership ends or the game is removed.

Which PlayStation Plus tier do you need?

Essential is enough for a monthly game. Extra is the lowest tier that provides the downloadable Game Catalog. Premium adds streaming for eligible catalog games, but it does not turn a catalog title into permanent ownership.

Open-world RPGs you may see in the catalog

Sony’s May 22, 2026 PlayStation Blog feature lists Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and Cyberpunk 2077 among open-world games in the Game Catalog. A July 15, 2026 catalog announcement adds Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora and Rise of the Ronin as examples. These titles illustrate the process; they are not a promise that every game is still downloadable today.

Catalog additions and removals are market-specific. The July announcement gives different availability dates for the United States, United Kingdom, Japan and other regions. Check the live Game Catalog on your own account, using your country and console, before relying on a particular RPG being included.

Check these requirements before you start

Use the correct account: Sign in to the PlayStation account that owns the Plus membership. A different local user may not see the entitlement.
Verify the tier: Essential covers Monthly Games; Extra or Premium is required for Game Catalog downloads.
Check your region: Catalog lineups, release dates and removal dates can differ by country.
Confirm the title’s status: A game may have left the catalog even if an older article or video still lists it.
Make room for the installation: Check available console storage before starting a large RPG download.
Keep the console or remote-download target online: A remote request requires the target console to be connected and configured to accept downloads.

Claim a monthly game on PS5

Sign in to the account with the active PlayStation Plus membership.
From the Games home screen, open PlayStation Plus.
Select Benefits, then choose Monthly Games.
Open the RPG you want to claim.
Select Download. The game is downloaded and associated with the account’s monthly-game entitlement.

If you only want to secure the entitlement for later, use the game page’s library option when it is shown, then download it when you are ready. The important requirement is that the monthly game is claimed before it leaves the monthly selection.

Claim a monthly game on PS4

Sign in to the account that has the active Plus membership.
From the PS4 function screen, open PlayStation Plus.
Select Monthly Games.
Open the RPG’s product page.
Select Add to Library.
After it is added, select Download.

The extra Add to Library step is the key difference in Sony’s console instructions. Selecting Download without first claiming the monthly entitlement may not give you the same long-term library access.

Download an open-world RPG from the Game Catalog

Use this route for an Extra or Premium title rather than a rotating monthly game.

PS5 instructions

Sign in to the Plus account.
Open PlayStation Plus from the Games home screen.
Select Benefits, then Game Catalog.
Browse or search for the open-world RPG.
Open the game page and select Download.
Choose the installation location if your console presents more than one storage option, then allow the download to complete.

PS4 instructions

Sign in to the account with Extra or Premium.
Open PlayStation Plus from the PS4 function screen.
Select Game Catalog.
Choose the eligible RPG.
Select Download and follow the on-screen installation prompts.

Unlike a monthly game, a catalog title does not need a separate Add to Library claim in Sony’s stated workflow. Its playability remains conditional on both your active tier and the game’s continued catalog availability.

Start the download remotely

Sony also supports initiating a download from a web browser or the PlayStation App. This is useful when you are away from the console.

Sign in to the same PlayStation account in the browser or PlayStation App.
Find the monthly game or catalog title in the PlayStation store or Plus catalog view.
Confirm that the account has the required entitlement: a claimed Monthly Game, or Extra/Premium access for a catalog title.
Select the option to download to your console and choose the target PS5 or PS4 if more than one console is associated with the account.
Leave the target console online and ready to receive remote downloads. If it is fully powered off or not connected, the request may wait until the console reconnects.

Remote downloading does not bypass tier, region, removal-date or storage checks. It simply sends the same installation request without requiring you to operate the console locally.

Download or stream? Understand the Premium difference

Premium includes streaming for eligible catalog games in supported regions, while Extra focuses on downloadable Game Catalog access. Streaming is not the same entitlement as downloading: the game remains subject to catalog availability, and the service needs a suitable broadband connection.

If you want to play offline or avoid streaming-related connection requirements, download the title instead. If storage or installation time is the problem and Premium streaming is available for that game in your country, streaming can be an alternative.

Why the Download button is missing

Work through the checks below in order. The message or missing button usually identifies which condition has failed.

The membership tier is too low

An Essential membership does not unlock the Game Catalog. Upgrade to Extra or Premium, or look for the title among the current Monthly Games. A monthly game also must have been claimed during its active monthly window.

The game is not available in your country

Catalog rights vary by market. If the game appears in a news announcement but not in your account’s catalog, your region may have a different launch date or may not receive that title. Use the catalog displayed after signing in, not a listing from another country.

The title was removed

Game Catalog games can have removal dates. Once the date passes, the download option can disappear even for an Extra or Premium member. Search the current catalog for another eligible RPG rather than treating an old listing as a continuing entitlement.

You are signed in to the wrong account

Sign out and sign back in with the account that purchased or currently holds the Plus membership. Check that the console user and the browser or app account are the same before retrying.

The console lacks storage

Delete or move enough data to create room, then retry the download. Large open-world RPGs can require substantial space, so check the storage screen before starting a remote installation.

The console or network is offline

For a console download, restore the internet connection and retry. For a remote request, make sure the selected PS4 or PS5 is powered on or in a mode that accepts remote downloads and is connected to the internet. A queued request may not begin until those conditions are restored.

The catalog page shows streaming but not downloading

Some Premium catalog entries support streaming without offering the same download option in a particular region or on a particular platform. Check the game’s page for its supported delivery method and use streaming only if your connection meets Sony’s requirements.

What happens when you cancel Plus?

When the membership expires, monthly games you claimed through Plus are no longer playable through that entitlement. If you later reactivate a qualifying membership, access to those claimed monthly games can return, provided the account and entitlement remain valid.

Game Catalog access is stricter: the membership must be Extra or Premium, and the game must still be in the catalog. Reactivating Plus cannot restore a title that Sony has already removed. A catalog game you downloaded is therefore access for the duration of the qualifying membership and catalog listing, not a permanent purchase.

A reliable five-minute workflow

Identify whether the RPG is a Monthly Game or a Game Catalog title.
Confirm that your account has Essential, Extra or Premium as required.
Check the live catalog for your country and look for any removal date.
Use the correct PS5 or PS4 menu path and complete the claim step before downloading when the page requires it.
If the button is unavailable, check account, region, catalog status, storage and connectivity in that order.

This process lets you claim a qualifying open-world RPG without paying its separate store price, while keeping the limits of PlayStation Plus clear: access follows the membership and, for catalog games, Sony’s current availability window.
