Choose Valheim if you want a slower, expedition-led survival game in a Viking setting. Choose Enshrouded if action-RPG combat, substantial construction and the largest group size matter most. Choose RuneScape: Dragonwilds if you want RuneScape skills, magic, potions, quests and a more guided survival-RPG structure.
The right first game depends less on its setting than on how you want to travel, fight, build, progress and share the world. The comparison below turns those differences into a practical choice for solo players and groups.

| Enshrouded | Players who want building combined with action-RPG combat | Construction and combat are foregrounded | 1–16 players |

What to decide before buying
“Which survival game should I play first?” is really several questions. Answer these in order rather than choosing from screenshots or a setting alone.
#1 Best Overall
- How much pressure do you want? A survival game can make food, shelter, equipment and distance central to every outing, or it can use survival systems as a framework around combat and progression.
- Is travel part of the fun? Some players enjoy planning a route, carrying the right supplies and deciding when to turn back. Others want reliable fast travel so they can spend more time fighting or building.
- What will you do between expeditions? Construction may be a practical base activity, a major creative outlet or a supporting system for progression.
- How should your character improve? You may prefer discovering power through exploration, developing an action-RPG combat build or following recognizable skills, spells and potion-making traditions.
- How many people will actually play? Use the listed co-op ceiling as a hard filter, then consider whether your group prefers a shared expedition, a combat-and-building sandbox or a guided role-playing structure.
- Where will you play? Confirm the current storefront and edition for your device before paying, especially if your group uses different platforms.
Valheim: choose it for expeditions and meaningful logistics
Valheim is the strongest first pick for someone who wants the journey itself to be the main event. Its Viking setting supports an expedition mindset: establish a foothold, prepare for a trip, travel into unfamiliar territory and decide how much risk to accept before returning with what you found.
The game’s player-crafted portals do not remove logistics completely because of item limits. That restriction keeps ordinary travel, cargo decisions and route planning relevant. A portal can shorten a journey without turning every location into an interchangeable room, so the world continues to feel connected by the trips you make through it.
This design suits players who enjoy self-directed goals. If you like choosing your own destination, setting up a practical base and learning a region through repeated journeys, Valheim gives those decisions more weight than a game built around constant fast travel. It is also a sensible choice for a medium-to-large co-op group within the listed 1–10-player range.
Pick Valheim when these statements sound like you
- You would rather plan an expedition than follow a tightly signposted sequence.
- Travel time, carrying capacity and return routes are part of the appeal, not obstacles to skip.
- You want survival pressure to shape how you prepare for combat and exploration.
- Your group wants a shared world that can support several players without requiring the largest possible server.
Think twice about Valheim if
You mainly want immediate action-RPG combat, highly directed quests or a construction-first experience. Valheim can still contain those activities, but the comparison identifies expedition and exploration as its defining strengths, so another option may match your first-game expectations more closely.
Enshrouded: choose it for construction and action-RPG combat
Enshrouded is the best match for players who want to build substantial spaces and fight through an action-RPG structure. Its identity is less about preserving a slow expedition loop and more about combining combat encounters with the satisfaction of improving a base and shaping the world around it.
The game lists unlockable fast-travel points, which supports a play pattern built around returning to known locations and moving efficiently between objectives. Player-crafted bases are limited, so the appeal is not unlimited settlement sprawl; it is making meaningful use of the construction the game allows while continuing to advance through combat and exploration.

With a listed range of 1–16 players, Enshrouded is the clearest choice when your regular group is larger than the other two games accommodate. A large party should still agree on roles and building priorities before starting, because more capacity does not automatically make coordination easier.
Pick Enshrouded when these statements sound like you
- Your ideal session alternates between fighting, unlocking progress and improving a shared base.
- You want fast-travel options to reduce routine backtracking.
- Construction is a major reason you play survival games rather than a way station between fights.
- Your friend group needs the highest listed player capacity in this comparison.
Think twice about Enshrouded if
You want every trip to remain a logistical problem or you are specifically seeking RuneScape skills, magic and potion systems. Its fast-travel and action-RPG emphasis may feel less expedition-focused than Valheim and less familiar than Dragonwilds for a RuneScape player.

- Capture and Tame Dinosaurs: Discover over 100 different dinosaurs and prehistoric creatures on the island, finding ways to tame them into useful additions for your tribe's dino herd
- Survive Above All: Hunger, thirst, basic safety and protecting yourself from the weather are all part of the game. Run too far and not only will you be exhausted, but you will also quickly get hungry and thirsty. Weather effects are based on real-world climates, and so you'll need to hide out from rain and snow, while making the most of sunny days
- Harvest, Hunt and Build: Cut down trees and turn them into a basic home, which you can quickly expand into a Jurassic estate. Hunt for meat, scavenge for plants (or start your own garden!)
- Gather Resources, Customize Everything: An extensive crafting system invites you to mix and match materials scavenged from the island, while also modifying the colors, textures, shapes and style of everything from the walls of your home, to your character's armor, weapons and more
- Explore the Island: Solve the mystery of The ARK as you explore this massive island, discovering Explorer's Notebooks (filled with clues!) throughout. Make your way to the final boss and figure out why you've been dropped into this Jurassic-era experience
RuneScape: Dragonwilds: choose it for skills, magic and a guided survival-RPG
RuneScape: Dragonwilds is a standalone co-op survival game set in the RuneScape universe. Jagex describes its premise as: Gather, build, skill and craft to survive in this co-operative survival crafting game.
That wording matters because it places skills and crafting alongside gathering and building rather than treating them as optional decoration.
The comparison recommends Dragonwilds for players who want RuneScape progression, magic, potions and quests inside a survival framework. If you already understand the appeal of developing recognizable skills and preparing abilities or consumables for the next challenge, this is the most natural first choice of the three.

Its player-crafted portals require runes. That requirement makes magical travel part of resource planning: movement is available, but preparing for it is itself a progression and crafting consideration. The listed co-op range is 1–6 players, which fits a smaller regular group or a solo player who occasionally invites friends.
Launch status and audience
Jagex announced that Dragonwilds would leave Early Access for full launch on 15 September 2026 for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The official FAQ also lists Nintendo Switch 2. Because the launch date has passed, check the storefront for the edition and platform you intend to use rather than assuming every listed version has identical availability.
Jagex reported more than one million Early Access sales in 2026. That figure indicates substantial interest, but it does not by itself tell you whether the game’s progression style matches your preferences.
Pick Dragonwilds when these statements sound like you
- You want survival systems connected to skills, spells, potions and quests.
- The RuneScape universe is a meaningful part of your decision, not merely a label.
- You prefer a more guided survival-RPG structure over a completely self-directed expedition.
- Your regular co-op group is small enough for the listed capacity.
Think twice about Dragonwilds if
You want the largest possible party, construction to be the main attraction or travel logistics without a resource requirement tied to magical portals. In those cases, Enshrouded or Valheim may fit better.
Travel systems: the difference you will feel every session
Fast travel is not a minor convenience in a survival-crafting game. It changes how you value distant resources, how often you establish outposts and whether a mistake on the road becomes a story or a short interruption.
Valheim’s portal limits
Valheim uses player-crafted portals, but item limits prevent them from replacing all physical transport. You still have to decide what travels through the portal and what must move by ordinary routes. That preserves a sense of distance and makes logistics part of the survival identity.
Rank #3
Enshrouded’s unlockable fast travel
Enshrouded provides unlockable fast-travel points and limits player-crafted bases. The result is a more structured network: you work toward access points, then use them to support combat and building without treating every location as a completely independent settlement.
Dragonwilds’ rune-powered portals
Dragonwilds lets players craft portals that require runes. Travel therefore connects directly to gathering, crafting and magical progression. Before choosing it, ask whether you enjoy maintaining a resource pipeline for movement as much as you enjoy arriving at the destination.

Valheim makes exploration and expedition planning the organizing principle. Progress comes from deciding where to go, preparing for the trip and turning discoveries into safer future journeys. Choose it when the satisfaction of gradually understanding a world matters more than a heavily directed sequence of objectives.
Enshrouded puts action-RPG combat and construction in the foreground. Select it when you want your character’s fights and your group’s built spaces to reinforce each other. The game’s listed strengths suggest a loop of combat, unlocking, building and returning to the next challenge.
Dragonwilds combines survival crafting with RuneScape-style skills, magic, potions and quests. Choose it when progression systems are the reason you want a survival game, not merely a set of tools for staying alive. Its standalone status means you do not need to treat it as an expansion to another RuneScape product; evaluate it as its own co-op survival game.

All three games list one player as a supported starting point, so the solo decision should be based on the kind of responsibility you want to carry alone.
- Solo Valheim: best if you enjoy setting your own destinations and managing expedition logistics without waiting for a quest marker to tell you what matters.
- Solo Enshrouded: best if combat encounters and construction projects are enough to provide your structure from session to session.
- Solo Dragonwilds: best if skills, magic, potions and quests give you the sense of direction you want from a survival-RPG.
Do not choose solely because a game technically supports solo play. The more important question is whether its core loop gives you satisfying decisions when no teammate is present to supply goals, carry resources or divide building work.

Before buying, agree on who owns the world or server, whether everyone is comfortable with the same progression pace and how you will handle shared resources. Those social decisions matter more than a one-line player-count comparison once the game is installed.
Platforms and timing checks
Dragonwilds has an announced full-launch date of 15 September 2026 on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with Nintendo Switch 2 listed in Jagex’s official FAQ. Confirm the current store listing, edition and cross-platform support for your group before purchase.
Platform availability for Valheim and Enshrouded is not established in the material for this comparison. Check each game’s current publisher or retailer listing for your exact device, region and edition. Do not assume that a friend’s platform or an older storefront page reflects the version you can buy today.
A five-step method for making the choice
- Write down your non-negotiable feature. Use one phrase: expeditions, construction and combat, or skills and magic. If you list all three as equal, rank them before continuing.
- Set your group ceiling. Count the people who will realistically play together, not everyone on your friends list. Eliminate any game whose listed capacity cannot accommodate that group.
- Choose your travel tolerance. Decide whether you want portal limits, unlockable fast travel or rune-based portals. This single preference predicts how much routine movement you will enjoy.
- Choose your progression language. Exploration-led discovery points to Valheim, action-RPG advancement points to Enshrouded, and RuneScape skills, magic, potions and quests point to Dragonwilds.
- Verify the purchase details. Check platform, region, edition, launch status and current price on the relevant storefront. Prices and inventory change, and no current price is established here.
Common first-game mistakes and how to avoid them
Choosing by setting alone
A Viking theme, an action-fantasy world or RuneScape familiarity can attract you, but the underlying loop determines whether you keep playing. Read the travel and progression sections before committing.
Treating player count as a quality score
A larger capacity is valuable only when you have a group that uses it. A smaller team may prefer a game whose progression and travel systems fit four regular players rather than an unused maximum.
Recommended Free Tools
Assuming every portal works the same way
Portal restrictions are design choices, not interchangeable conveniences. Item limits, unlockable points and rune requirements create different preparation habits, so select the system you will enjoy managing repeatedly.
Ignoring platform details until after purchase
Verify the exact device and edition for every member of your group first. This is especially important around a new full launch, when store listings and platform support can change.
Expecting one game to provide every style equally
These titles overlap as survival-crafting games, but each has a clear center of gravity. Pick the one whose strongest loop matches your priority instead of expecting a compromise to feel like three games at once.
Final recommendation
For the broadest expedition-and-survival experience, start with Valheim. For construction-led play, action-RPG combat and the largest listed co-op capacity, start with Enshrouded. For RuneScape skills, magic, potions, quests and a guided survival-RPG structure, start with RuneScape: Dragonwilds. Check your platform and current storefront details, then let your preferred loop—not the setting alone—make the final decision.
