Choose the highest resolution the video actually offers if you want detail, have enough storage, and can play it smoothly. For a smaller file, limited device, or wider compatibility, choose a lower resolution or a codec your player supports. Keep the source frame rate where possible, and check the codec as well as the file extension: “MP4” alone does not guarantee compatibility or quality.
Start with the source and your playback device
There is no single best download setting for every video. First check which resolutions and formats the source makes available; then consider where you will watch it, how much storage you have, and whether that device and app support the file.
A useful choice balances six things:
- Source detail: the resolution and visible detail actually present in the original.
- File size: the storage the download will use.
- Motion: the source frame rate and how fluid movement should look.
- Codec: the method used to encode the video and the device’s ability to decode it.
- Container and audio: the packaging and audio formats your player can handle.
- SDR or HDR: whether the video’s dynamic-range format matches the display.
Choose a resolution that offers real detail
Resolution describes the dimensions of each video frame. Choose the source’s highest available resolution when picture detail is the priority and your screen, player, processing capacity, and storage can handle it. A larger frame can take more bandwidth and processing power to decode, as Google’s VP9 documentation explains.
If the source only offers a smaller resolution, downloading or converting it to a larger one does not restore detail that was never present. If storage or playback capacity is limited, a lower available resolution may be more practical.

Balance bitrate, quality, and file size
Bitrate is the amount of encoded data used per unit of time. It affects file size, but it cannot be judged in isolation: resolution, frame rate, codec, and the content itself all affect how much data is needed for a given visual result. Compare options with similar resolution and frame rate rather than assuming the highest bitrate is automatically best.
As a platform-specific example, YouTube’s upload guidance recommends 8 Mbps for SDR 1080p video at 24, 25, or 30 fps, and 12 Mbps at 48, 50, or 60 fps. Those are YouTube upload recommendations, not a universal target for downloads or a guarantee of a particular quality. YouTube publishes separate recommendations for HDR as well. See YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings.

Keep the source frame rate unless you have a reason to change it
Frame rate is the number of frames shown per second. For smooth motion and faithful playback, prefer the source frame rate when the download options allow it. Changing frame rate can alter motion, and choosing a high frame rate does not add original motion detail if the source did not contain it.
YouTube’s recommended encoding settings say, “Content should be encoded and uploaded in the same frame rate it was recorded.” That advice is specifically for uploads to YouTube, but matching the source is also a useful principle when choosing among available download versions. The same guidance says to deinterlace interlaced content for YouTube uploads.

Understand the difference between a codec and a container
A container packages video, audio, and sometimes other data in one file. MP4 and WebM are containers. A codec encodes and decodes the video stream; examples include H.264, VP9, HEVC/H.265, and AV1. A file’s extension identifies its container, not necessarily the codec inside it, so “MP4” by itself is not proof that a particular device can play the file.
Compatibility depends on the actual codec and container combination, the codec profile and other stream properties, and support in the device and playback app. On Android, for example, the official supported formats table lists different support for H.264, HEVC, VP9, and AV1. It states that AV1 decoding is supported from Android 10 and that AV1 encoder and decoder support is mandatory beginning with Android 14. These are Android platform statements; they do not guarantee support for every handset, profile, resolution, HDR mode, or app.

For a file intended to be uploaded to YouTube, its upload guidance recommends an MP4 container, H.264 video, progressive scan, and AAC-LC or Opus audio, and recommends placing the MP4 moov atom at the front for “Fast Start.” Those are upload-preparation recommendations, not general rules for downloading. For a download, prioritize the streams offered by the source and the target player’s compatibility.
Check the display and playback app before choosing
Before choosing a newer or less common codec, check the specific device and app you plan to use. Support can vary by operating-system version and can depend on more than a codec name: profile, resolution, HDR mode, container, and audio format can matter too. If a file will be played on several devices, a broadly supported combination may be more dependable than a more efficient option that one of them cannot decode.

Quick Recap
Use this quick decision process
- Check what the source offers. Do not select a resolution, frame rate, or format that is not actually available from the source.
- Choose the resolution for your screen and storage. Prefer more source detail when it is useful and practical; choose a smaller available version when storage or decoding is a constraint.
- Keep the source frame rate. Change it only for a specific playback or editing need.
- Check the actual codec and container. Confirm support in the device and app that will play the file; do not rely on the extension alone.
- Account for audio and dynamic range. Check audio-format and SDR/HDR compatibility when the player or display is a concern.
- Compare file size and quality together. Treat bitrate as one factor alongside resolution, frame rate, codec, and content—not as a standalone quality score.
