Start by measuring the mirror, the usable wall on either side, the faucet and backsplash clearance, and the location of existing wiring. If both sides of the mirror have room, a pair of sconces or vertical lights is a practical starting point; if not, center a horizontal bar above the mirror, sized at roughly three-quarters of the mirror’s width. Those are design guidelines—not fixed installation rules—so check the mirror, fixture, room, and local electrical requirements before deciding where to mount anything.
Measure the vanity wall before choosing a fixture
Use the mirror as your main reference for light scale, but check how the entire arrangement fits the vanity. KOHLER says a bathroom mirror is typically narrower than or the same width as its vanity. Its mirror buying guide also advises accounting for clearance between the mirror, lights, and faucet when choosing mirror height.
- Measure the vanity and mirror width and height.
- Record the usable wall space on both sides of the mirror, including nearby cabinets and side walls.
- Note the faucet, backsplash, mirror trim, medicine-cabinet doors, and any door swings that could interfere with a fixture.
- Find the existing electrical box and consider whether its position suits the layout you want.
The Home Depot’s vanity lighting buying guide discusses layout constraints such as mirror width and existing wiring. Treat the available wall and clearances as design constraints, rather than sizing a light from the mirror alone.
Choose a layout that fits the mirror and wall
| Layout | When it can work | Starting point | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pair of side sconces or vertical bars | There is usable wall space on both sides of the mirror. | Guides commonly place fixture centers about 60–66 inches above the finished floor. Set the spacing according to the mirror and fixture dimensions. | Provides light from both sides of the face, but needs side wall space and suitable wiring. |
| Horizontal bar above the mirror | Side fixtures will not fit, or existing wiring favors a central light. | Start near 75% of mirror width and center the bar over the mirror. Set its height to suit the mirror and fixture. | Uses less side wall space, though a single overhead source may leave more facial shadow. |
| Illuminated mirror | You are considering replacing the mirror or have limited wall space. | Choose by the mirror’s actual dimensions and the product’s lighting specifications. | Combines mirror and lighting, but light distribution varies by model. |
These dimensions are practical starting points in the cited guides, not a universal standard. Lumera Electric’s bathroom vanity lighting guide, The Home Depot, MOD Lighting, and ZEVNI provide recommendations that vary in their placement details. Adjust to the specific fixture, mirror, and room.

Place side sconces when there is room
One fixture on each side of the mirror brings light from both directions. The guides commonly put the centers around 60–66 inches above the finished floor and suggest aiming the light source around face or eye height. Use that range as a starting point, not a measurement to apply without checking the people who will use the vanity and the fixture’s shape.
Keep the pair level. Some guides suggest leaving a small gap of a few inches between each fixture and the mirror edge, but there is no single spacing that suits every arrangement. Check the fixture’s full width and projection against the mirror frame, nearby wall, cabinets, and doors; then space the lights so the pair looks balanced and clears those obstacles. MOD Lighting’s wall-sconce guide offers approximate placement advice and emphasizes adapting it to the room and fixture.

Size and mount a bar above the mirror
When side lights do not fit—or the existing electrical box is centered above the mirror—a horizontal bar is a straightforward alternative. Begin with a bar about three-quarters of the mirror’s width and center it over the mirror. This is a proportion guideline, not a requirement: check the fixture’s actual length and the width of the mirror and vanity so the arrangement looks balanced and fits the wall.
Published mounting advice varies. Some guides give a center height around 75–80 inches from the floor; others describe a gap above the mirror. Do not combine those into a fixed rule. The mirror’s height and frame, fixture dimensions, ceiling height, and electrical-box position all affect the final placement. Follow the fixture manufacturer’s installation instructions and confirm that the bar clears mirror trim and other nearby surfaces.

Adapt the plan for double vanities and lighted mirrors
Double vanities and wide mirrors
With two sinks, the layout depends on whether you have one long mirror or two separate mirrors. You can consider a bar over each sink or matching sconces arranged around the mirror zones. A central extra sconce may or may not be practical: available wall space, wiring, and the width of the fixtures determine whether it fits without crowding the composition. Check the mirror against the vanity and preserve clearance around the faucet and lights.
Illuminated mirrors
A lighted mirror can combine the reflective surface and lighting, which may help where wall space is limited. Compare the mirror’s dimensions and the product’s lighting specifications with your needs. Do not assume every illuminated mirror distributes light in the same way.

Before installation, make sure the planned fixture clears the mirror frame, backsplash, cabinetry, and any doors. Check the fixture’s location rating for where it will go, and follow applicable local electrical requirements. A commercial guide such as Lumera Electric’s distinguishes damp-rated fixtures for general vanity areas from wet-rated fixtures that may be required near showers or tubs. That guidance does not replace local rules: requirements depend on the fixture’s exact location and the applicable code.
