Choose thermal paper by the printer mechanism’s specifications, not by the ESP32 board. Before ordering, confirm the supported paper width and maximum roll outside diameter; then set your printer software to the same width if its library requires a manual setting. A 58 mm roll can still be too large for a compact printer, while other mechanisms support 80 mm paper or larger rolls.
Check these specifications before buying
- Supported paper width: Find the mechanism’s specified roll or paper width. Thermal printers commonly use 58 mm or 80 mm paper, but the mechanism must explicitly support the width you choose. The ESP32 itself does not set it.
- Maximum roll outside diameter: Check the largest roll diameter that fits the printer. Matching the width alone does not guarantee that the roll will fit inside its compartment.
- Width tolerance: Follow any tolerance specified by the mechanism manufacturer. Do not assume a nominal width has the same tolerance across different printers.
- Software width setting: Check whether your printer library detects paper width or expects you to configure it. Set the software width to match the installed paper and mechanism.
- Roll length and construction: A standard long roll may be too large for a compact printer even if its width is correct. Check the roll’s outside diameter, not only its advertised length.
How printer specifications differ
These examples show why you should use the documentation for your particular mechanism rather than treating one ESP32 printer’s dimensions as universal.

Set the software width to match the printer
The ESP32 ESC/POS library documentation gives 58 mm and 80 mm as width configuration examples and says the library does not query the printer for its paper width. For that library, configure the width after connecting and make sure it matches the installed mechanism. Other libraries may work differently, so check the documentation for the one you use.
Choose the roll for your mechanism
If your mechanism is rated for 58 mm paper
Look for 58 mm thermal paper, then compare the roll’s outside diameter with the mechanism’s maximum. For the DFRobot DFR0503, the specified maximum is 30 mm. A generic 58 mm roll is not necessarily small enough to fit.

If your mechanism is rated for 80 mm paper
Buy 80 mm thermal receipt paper only after confirming that the mechanism accepts that width. Check its roll-diameter limit as well; two printers that both accept 80 mm paper may have different limits.

Adafruit’s guide to mini thermal receipt printers notes that common 25 m rolls may not fit as supplied. For the mini printer covered by that guide, it describes rewinding paper onto an empty spool and cutting it to a suitable diameter. Use this approach only if it suits your printer and you can keep the roll feeding properly.
