Choose streaming quality based on the sustained download speed reaching your playback device while other people and devices are using the internet—not just the speed advertised in your plan. For YouTube, its approximate guidance is 5 Mbps for 1080p and 20 Mbps for 4K UHD. These are platform recommendations, not guarantees; if playback buffers, test near the device and try one quality step lower.
How much speed do you need for each YouTube resolution?
YouTube’s current help guidance, checked in 2026, gives these approximate sustained-speed recommendations:
| Resolution | Approximate recommended speed |
|---|---|
| 360p | 0.7 Mbps |
| 480p | 1.1 Mbps |
| 720p | 2.5 Mbps |
| 1080p | 5 Mbps |
| 4K UHD | 20 Mbps |
These figures are YouTube’s recommendations, not universal thresholds for every streaming service or a promise of uninterrupted playback. The actual result depends on the service, video, device, browser, connection stability, and other network use. Check the platform’s own requirements when choosing quality outside YouTube. YouTube’s system requirements list the approximate recommendations above. Separately, its page for purchased UHD titles says a consistent download speed of at least 15 Mbps is needed for UHD playback; that figure applies to that context, not as a general 4K rule. YouTube’s purchased-title guidance explains that requirement.
Measure the speed that reaches your viewing device
Your internet plan’s advertised speed does not tell you exactly what a television, phone, computer, or streaming box can use at a particular moment. Run a speed test close to the device you will watch on, ideally while the household is using the network as it normally does. Other active devices and applications share the connection, so the speed available for video may be lower than a test taken elsewhere or at a quieter time. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the connection near the device.
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Compare the result with the platform’s sustained-speed guidance for your target resolution. A brief high result does not show that the connection can maintain that rate throughout a video. If the available speed varies, leave headroom by choosing a lower quality rather than aiming at the exact published recommendation.
Choose a quality that fits your screen and content
More pixels can make a visible difference on a large screen, while the improvement may be less noticeable on a small screen or when sitting farther away. YouTube notes that higher quality generally looks better on larger screens. Your preferred balance also matters: lower quality uses less bandwidth, while higher quality preserves more image detail.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
A quality setting cannot add detail that is absent from the original. If a video was uploaded only in standard definition, selecting a higher setting will not turn it into HD or 4K. The device and browser must also support the format being streamed. YouTube notes that some devices may not support VP9, which can make high-quality options such as 1080p or 4K unavailable. YouTube’s quality and playback guidance covers these limits.
What to do when a stream keeps buffering
- Test near the playback device. Check the download speed where the TV, streaming box, computer, or phone is connected. A test on another device or in another room may not reflect the connection used for playback.
- Reduce competing use. Pause large downloads or other bandwidth-heavy activity, or ask household members to pause it briefly. Then see whether playback becomes more stable.
- Lower quality one step. If the video is set to 4K, try 1080p; if it is at 1080p, try 720p. Watch long enough to see whether buffering or quality changes settle.
- Check resolution support. Confirm that the video itself is available at the desired resolution and that the app, browser, and playback device support it.
- Improve the local connection. Move a wireless device closer to the router, reduce interference, and limit unnecessary connected devices. If the playback device supports Ethernet, test a wired connection; YouTube says hardwiring may help with playback issues. A cable is optional troubleshooting, not a requirement, and it cannot provide more bandwidth than the internet connection delivers. YouTube’s connection troubleshooting steps include these suggestions.
When to use automatic or manual quality
YouTube says, “To give you the best viewing experience, YouTube changes the quality of your video stream based on your viewing conditions.” Automatic quality can adjust as conditions change. If the picture keeps shifting or buffers, select a lower quality manually and use the result as a practical test of whether the connection can sustain smoother playback. The exact controls and available options vary by device and interface. YouTube’s instructions for changing video quality describe the available controls.
