Choose roofing screws to match the support beneath the panels: wood or wood products need a wood fastener, while steel purlins need a metal-to-metal fastener. Then use the panel maker’s instructions to confirm screw length, washer, corrosion protection, fixing position and spacing. There is no universal screw size or fastening pattern for every corrugated roof.
Start with the material supporting the roof
The screw must suit the material it enters. A screw intended for timber is not a substitute for a fastener designed to drill or thread into a steel purlin. Check the panel manufacturer’s current installation guide for approved fasteners for the exact panel and support combination.
Timber, plywood or OSB
Use a wood fastener approved for the roof system. For its 7/8-inch corrugated panel system, S3 Metals specifies #10 woodfast screws for dimensional lumber and #14 woodfast screws for plywood or OSB. Its guide calls for panel screws in dimensional lumber to penetrate the lumber by 1 inch; screws into plywood should pass through its underside by 3/8 inch. These are instructions for that particular system, not general sizes or penetration rules for all roofs.
Steel purlins
Use a metal-to-metal fastener suited to the purlin thickness and roof assembly. S3 lists Tek screws for its corrugated panels attached to metal purlins. The New Zealand Metal Roofing Manufacturers’ Code of Practice gives three threads engaged in steel as general guidance, while directing users to the manufacturer for application-specific recommendations.
#1 Best Overall
- ANTI-CORROSION COATING: Featuring a corrosion-resistant ruspert coating that withstands 1000-hour salt spray testing, these durable metal roofing screws excel in extreme weather conditions while maintaining long-lasting rust protection for reliable indoor/outdoor use
- EASY TO INSTALL: The 17 type sharp pointed tip penetrates through metal and wood effortlessly without pre drilling. Aggressive high and low threads provide strong holding power to secure materials tightly
- LEAK-PROOF EPDM WASHER: Roofing screws with EPDM rubber washer compress to form a watertight seal, preventing roof leaks during heavy rain and snow. Resists moisture, chemicals, and temperature extremes
- MULTIPLE APPLICATION: These metal roof screws are ideal for metal roof panels, corrugated roofing, tin sheds, pole barns, and DIY siding projects. The metal thickness should not exceed 2 mm
- PACKAGE: 300 PCS #10 x 1-1/2 Inch metal roofing screws with 5/16 Inch hex head, 1 PC 5/16 Inch upgraded magnetic hex socket. LIONMAX roofing screws come with a handy plastic box for convenient storage
Choose length for the whole roof assembly
Do not choose screw length from the panel name alone. Account for the panel profile, any insulation or other intervening layers, and the amount of engagement required in the supporting material. A screw that is too short may not achieve the required engagement; one that is unnecessarily long may be unsuitable for the assembly. Confirm the length against the panel and fastener manufacturers’ specifications.
As general guidance, the New Zealand Code of Practice calls for 30 mm embedment into timber or three threads engaged in steel. These figures come from that code context and do not replace the instructions for a particular roof or local requirements.

Match the sealing washer and corrosion protection
Washer and profile
Use the washer specified for the screw and panel profile. S3 says roof and wall fasteners in its guide should have EPDM sealing washers; the New Zealand code also calls for profiled washers to have an EPDM sealing washer. Washer size and shape can vary with the profile and fixing method. A compatible washer helps seal the penetration, but it cannot compensate for a wrong screw, poor placement or incorrect installation.
Corrosion resistance and material compatibility
Choose a fastener material and coating compatible with the roofing materials and the roof’s exposure. The New Zealand Code of Practice recommends at least Class 4 fasteners for severe environments and Class 5 for very severe environments, and requires compatibility between fastener materials and coatings and the materials being fastened. Those recommendations belong to that code’s context; determine the applicable class from local conditions and requirements rather than treating the classes as a worldwide rule.

Follow the panel’s fastening map
Fastening position and spacing depend on the profile and system. Use the panel maker’s map for purlin rows, edges, laps, wind conditions and whether the fastener goes through a crest or another specified location. For its 7/8-inch corrugated application, S3 calls for fastening along each rib and at each purlin, with additional fastening in high-wind conditions. Do not apply that pattern to a different panel without confirmation from its manufacturer.
Install screws without compromising the seal
- Confirm the assembly: identify the panel profile, support material, intervening layers and the manufacturer-approved screw, washer and length.
- Mark the specified positions: follow the panel guide’s fastening map and applicable local requirements rather than choosing spacing by eye.
- Drive squarely: keep the screw perpendicular to the panel so the washer seats evenly.
- Set the seal correctly: tighten enough for the washer to contact and seal, without crushing or deforming it. Overdriving can damage an EPDM seal; underdriving can leave it improperly seated. REISSER’s roof application guidance illustrates EPDM seal damage from overdriving.
- Use appropriate depth control: S3 recommends a 2000 rpm depth-sensing nose piece for its system. Use the tool and settings specified for the actual fastener and roof instructions.
Check these details before buying
- Does the screw match the support: timber or wood products, versus steel purlin?
- Is its length sufficient for the panel profile, extra layers and specified support engagement?
- Is the corrosion protection suitable for the exposure and local requirements?
- Does the washer material and profile match the panel and fastener combination?
- Does the panel manufacturer approve the screw and specify its fixing locations and spacing?
A product listing that says “metal roofing screw” is not enough to establish compatibility. Verify the screw, washer and installation details against the exact roof system before using it.
