Choose an AR-15 red dot by matching its reticle, mounting height, controls, and durability specifications to how you use the rifle—not by looking for a universally “best” model. First decide whether a non-magnifying 1× optic suits your distances, then check that the sight, mount, rail, and backup sights work together.

Start with the rifle’s role and typical distances

A red dot is a non-magnifying optic. Your usual target distances and intended use should guide choices such as dot size, reticle layout, brightness controls, window and housing, and weight. SIG SAUER’s rifle sight-selection guidance recommends starting with the rifle and the distances involved, then choosing a reticle according to use and preference.

There is no single setup that suits every shooter. Compare the physical fit and specifications of the complete setup—not only the optic model name.

Choose a dot size and reticle you can use comfortably

Dot size

Dot size is commonly expressed in minutes of angle (MOA). A larger illuminated dot can be easier to pick up quickly, but may cover more of a small target when you are aiming at distance. A smaller dot covers less of the target, though whether it is easier for you to see depends on your vision and the lighting conditions.

#1 Best Overall
Vortex Strikefire II Red Dot Sight - 4 MOA Red/Green Dot
  • The Strikefire II Red/Green Dot is a rugged, reliable red dot sight that is at home in a variety of applications. It allows the user to operate between two dot colors and ten brightness settings to easily adjust for changing conditions
  • Fully multi-coated lenses provide a clean and bright, unobscured point of view. Unlimited eye relief allows for rapid transitions
  • The single-piece chasis is compact and lightweight but still delivers shockproof performance holding up to whatever you throw at it. Nitrogen purging and o-ring seals ensure fogproof and waterproof performance
  • An offset cantilever mount is provided; allowing you to move the sight forward to be used in conjunction with a magnifier and backup iron sights
  • With aesthetics and functionality in mind, the power controls are at the rear of the Strikefire for easy access. The Strikefire II runs off a CR2 battery

As one model-specific example, SIG SAUER lists the ROMEO5X with a 2 MOA dot. That is a manufacturer specification, not evidence that this size is best for every AR-15 or shooter.

Circle-dot and other reticles

A reticle with a circle around its center point can make the aiming point easier to locate quickly for some users. SIG SAUER describes that as a possible advantage; it remains a matter of preference and intended use. If you can, compare candidate reticles in person under conditions similar to those in which you expect to use the rifle.

  • [ 2 Height Mount Options ] Offers two height options (Low and Lower 1/3 Co-Witness), lending its functionality on any platform.

Dot sizes and intended uses vary by optic. For example, Leupold describes its 6 MOA DeltaPoint Pro as intended for rapid close-range engagements. That is the manufacturer’s product description, not an independent comparison or a universal rule for choosing a dot.

Check mount height, rail fit, and backup sights together

Before buying, confirm the exact optic footprint and whether its mount fits the rifle’s Picatinny rail. Then check the height of the mounted optic against your preferred cheek weld and the relationship you want between the red dot and any backup iron sights. Mount height is model-specific: SIG SAUER lists the ROMEO5X’s included modular Picatinny riser at 1.41 inches for absolute co-witness and 1.63 inches for lower-third co-witness.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

With an absolute co-witness, the iron sights and red dot appear at roughly the same height in the sight picture. With a lower-third co-witness, the iron sights sit lower in the optic window. Neither arrangement is automatically right for everyone; choose based on your rifle’s existing sights, preferred sight picture, and ability to get a comfortable, repeatable cheek weld. Do not assume another model uses the same heights as the ROMEO5X.

Compare the practical specifications

Once the optic fits your rail and preferred sight picture, compare the details that affect day-to-day use. Manufacturer claims are specifications to verify against the exact model and its current manual, not independent test results.

ROMEO5X specifications as a concrete example

SIG SAUER’s product listing describes the ROMEO5X as a 1× optic with a 20 mm clear aperture and 2 MOA red dot. It lists one AAA battery, up to 50,000 hours of runtime, motion-activated illumination, eight daytime and two night-vision illumination settings, IPX-7 waterproofing, and the modular Picatinny riser heights noted above. These are SIG SAUER’s model-specific specifications and claims, not independent test findings. Check the current listing and manual for the exact SKU, package contents, and warranty before purchase.

If the dot looks distorted, troubleshoot before deciding

A red dot that looks like a starburst rather than a round point may be related to how your eye perceives it. SIG SAUER’s FAQ suggests comparing the view through the non-dominant eye, lowering brightness to suit ambient light, and photographing the dot. These are troubleshooting suggestions, not a medical diagnosis; a photograph may also be affected by the camera.

If the effect persists, try viewing candidate optics yourself where possible. An etched-reticle prism optic is another category to investigate: SIG SAUER notes that some users with astigmatism or other vision concerns may find an etched reticle easier to see. That does not mean it will be clearer for everyone.

Install the optic and confirm zero

  1. Read the exact optic and mount manuals. Confirm the specified mounting orientation, fastener procedure, and torque for your model.
  2. Seat the mount consistently. SIG SAUER advises pressing the mount forward against the Picatinny lug when installing its optics; follow the instructions for your specific sight rather than treating this as a substitute for its manual.
  3. Use the specified torque. Do not guess or transfer a torque value from another model.
  4. Confirm zero at an appropriate range. After installation, verify zero and point of impact at the distances that matter for your intended use, following safe handling practices and applicable laws.

Use sources as specifications, not rankings

SIG SAUER’s current guidance and FAQ were accessed October 3, 2026; its ROMEO5X product specifications were also accessed that day. Leupold’s selection guide, published March 29, 2021, attributes preferences for durability, field of view, and low weight to Garett Schwindel, whom it describes as a former 2nd Ranger Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment member and firearms instructor. Those are attributed selection perspectives, not universal rules or independent product rankings.
