Choose based on the software you actually use, not just Windows’ minimum: Microsoft lists 4 GB as the Windows 11 minimum, but that is an eligibility requirement, not a buying recommendation. Before upgrading, confirm that your exact computer supports more memory and identify the correct memory type.
How much RAM do you need?
There is no single right capacity for every computer. Microsoft’s PC and laptop buying guide recommends 8–16 GB for general buying, with gaming or streaming potentially calling for closer to 16 GB. Microsoft also advises checking the system requirements for the programs you plan to use.
| Capacity guidance | Who it may suit | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| 4 GB | Not a general buying target for a Windows 11 PC. | Microsoft lists 4 GB as the Windows 11 minimum system requirement. Meeting the minimum does not establish that a particular workload will feel comfortable. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 requirements. |
| 8 GB | Entry-level or general use, depending on the apps and multitasking involved. | Microsoft’s buying guide places it at the lower end of its 8–16 GB general range. Microsoft’s memory explainer recommends 8 GB for keeping a device running long term; this is guidance, not a performance guarantee. See Microsoft’s memory explainer. |
| 16 GB | A more flexible target for many users, including people who game, stream, or use demanding programs. | It is the upper end of Microsoft’s general buying range. Microsoft says 16 GB or more may suit photo or video editing and high-performance projects. Actual needs depend on the software and workload. |
| More than 16 GB | Workloads whose specific software requirements or project demands call for more memory. | Do not assume every gamer or creative user needs a particular higher capacity. Check each program’s requirements; the sources here do not establish a universal capacity or value winner above 16 GB. |
Is 8 GB enough?
It can be appropriate for general use, but “enough” depends on the programs you run and how many you keep open. Microsoft recommends 8 GB for longer-term general use, while its broader buying guide gives 8–16 GB as the general range. If you expect to game, stream, edit media, or multitask with demanding applications, consider 16 GB or consult those applications’ requirements before choosing.
How much RAM do gaming and creative apps need?
Gaming and streaming
Microsoft’s guidance says gaming or streaming may call for closer to 16 GB. This is not a blanket minimum for every game or a promise of smooth performance: requirements vary with the game, settings, background applications, and the rest of the computer. Check the requirements for the titles and streaming software you intend to use.

Photo and video work
Microsoft says 16 GB or more may fit photo and video editing or other high-performance projects. As one application-specific example, Adobe lists 8 GB as the minimum and 16 GB or more as recommended for desktop Photoshop on its technical requirements page. Those figures apply to Photoshop’s stated requirements; they do not guarantee performance for every project or establish what another creative application needs.
How to compare RAM configurations before buying
- List your workload. Note the programs you expect to use together, such as a browser, games, streaming tools, or creative apps.
- Check each program’s requirements. Compare minimum and recommended memory requirements where the software maker publishes them. Microsoft’s buying guide advises: “Check the system requirements for the programs you plan to use.”
- Compare the available capacities. Use the requirements and workload to decide whether an entry-level 8 GB configuration is suitable or whether 16 GB or more better matches your needs. Do not treat a general guideline as a guarantee.
- Check price and upgrade options for the exact computer. Compare the configurations offered for that model and whether memory can be upgraded later. The available guidance does not establish a universal best-value configuration.
Can you upgrade your PC or laptop’s RAM?
Not always. Upgrade options depend on the exact device; memory may be soldered, slots may be limited, and each model has a supported maximum. Microsoft notes that upgrade options are not universal. Before buying a module, consult the manufacturer’s specifications and service information for your precise model.

Verify compatibility before shopping
- Find the computer’s exact model and confirm its maximum supported memory.
- Check whether memory is soldered, replaceable, or expandable through available slots.
- Identify the required memory generation and module type.
- Match the form factor: Intel distinguishes laptop SO-DIMM modules from desktop DIMM modules in its gaming laptop guidance. Do not assume a desktop module fits a laptop.
- Use the device maker’s specifications or service documentation to confirm compatibility before ordering.
A compatible module is only useful if the computer supports it. The cited guidance does not identify one universal kit or establish a current price.
