The right portable power station is sized in two separate dimensions: energy capacity (watt-hours, Wh) for how long your devices can run, and output power (watts, W) for whether they can run at all. List each device, estimate its average wattage and runtime, add loads that will operate together, allow for conversion losses and a reserve, then verify continuous and startup (surge) ratings. A station can have enough Wh for a long runtime but still fail to start a refrigerator compressor if its output rating is too low.

Wh and W answer different questions

Watt-hours (Wh) describe stored energy. They are the starting point for estimating runtime. Watts (W) describe instantaneous power. They determine whether the station can support a load at a particular moment and whether several devices can operate simultaneously.

Specification Reader question it answers Why it matters
Rated capacity (Wh) How long might my devices run? More Wh generally allows a longer runtime, subject to inverter and other losses.
Continuous AC output (W) Can the station supply the devices while they are running? The combined simultaneous draw must stay within this rating.
Surge or peak output (W) Can it handle startup demand? Motors and compressors can briefly draw more than their steady running wattage.
Ports and output voltage Can I connect each device safely? Check outlet type, USB ratings, DC voltage, and any required adapters.

Do not treat the capacity printed on the case as energy that will necessarily reach AC outlets. The inverter and other circuitry consume some energy, and conditions such as temperature and battery age affect the result.

How to calculate how many watt-hours you need

  1. Make a device list. Record every device, its rated or measured watts, the number of hours you want it powered, and whether it runs continuously or cycles on and off.
  2. Find watts for each device. Use the nameplate, manual, or a meter. If a label gives volts and amps instead, Schneider Electric’s arithmetic is watts = volts × amps; for a steady load, watt-hours = watts × hours (Schneider Electric’s battery-sizing FAQ, modified February 5, 2026). That FAQ concerns inverter/battery systems, so use the equations as arithmetic guidance rather than a portable-station guarantee.
  3. Adjust cycling devices to average draw. A refrigerator, freezer, pump, or similar appliance may switch on and off. Do not multiply its highest running wattage by every hour. Estimate an average over the intended period, ideally from a plug-in energy meter. The operating conditions determine actual refrigerator runtime.
  4. Calculate each device’s energy. Multiply average watts by planned hours. Add the Wh values for devices that share the same period.
  5. Apply an efficiency factor and reserve. The result is a planning estimate, not a guaranteed runtime. Use the manufacturer guidance below, then add a separate reserve for uncertainty.

A compact expression for a stable AC load is:

estimated runtime (hours) ≈ rated station Wh × planning efficiency ÷ average device W

To size a station from a desired runtime:

required rated Wh ≈ average device W × desired hours ÷ planning efficiency

For several devices, first add their energy requirements, or add their simultaneous watts when checking output power.

Worked example: laptop, lights, and a router

Suppose an illustrative setup uses a 60 W laptop for 6 hours, two 10 W lights for 5 hours, and a 12 W router for 8 hours. The arithmetic is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Laptop: 60 W × 6 h = 360 Wh
  • Lights: (10 W + 10 W) × 5 h = 100 Wh
  • Router: 12 W × 8 h = 96 Wh
  • Total device energy: 556 Wh

Using a 0.8 planning factor, the calculation gives about 695 Wh of rated capacity before any additional reserve. Using 0.85 gives about 654 Wh. Those figures are illustrations; use your devices’ actual measured or documented consumption.

Worked example: a cycling refrigerator

A refrigerator’s label may show a running wattage, but the compressor is not necessarily on every minute. If a meter shows an average of 70 W over the period you care about and you need 10 hours, the energy estimate is 700 Wh. The station must also tolerate the compressor’s startup surge and the refrigerator’s running load. A 700 Wh energy estimate alone does not prove that a particular station will start it.

Which efficiency factor should you use?

Published planning formulas differ, so present them as estimates rather than a universal constant. Jackery Support gives:

Add a reserve instead of buying to the exact minimum

After accounting for conversion losses, add capacity above the calculated minimum. TechRadar’s current buyer guide recommends a 20–30% buffer and attributes real-world variation to temperature, battery age, and startup surge (TechRadar portable-power-station guide, accessed October 9, 2026). This is practical buying guidance, not a universal technical standard.

For example, if your loss-adjusted calculation says 800 Wh, a 20% buffer makes the planning target 960 Wh; a 30% buffer makes it 1,040 Wh. Select a model whose rated capacity meets that target, then verify its output ratings separately. A reserve is especially useful when the station will be used in cold or hot conditions, has aged, or must start a motor.

Check continuous output and startup surge

Make a second calculation using only the devices that will be on at the same time. Add their running watts and compare the total with the station’s continuous AC output. Include USB and DC loads according to the manufacturer’s stated limits; some stations publish separate limits for different outputs.

Why surge matters

Compressor and motor appliances can draw a brief inrush current at startup. Compare the appliance’s startup requirement, if documented, with the station’s surge rating and surge duration. If the appliance does not state a surge figure, a measured startup reading or the station manufacturer’s compatibility guidance is safer than guessing. A station that passes the Wh calculation but trips its inverter at startup is undersized for that appliance.

Sequence loads when necessary

If several high-demand appliances are present, start them one at a time and avoid turning on another motor while the first is starting. This can reduce simultaneous surge, but it does not make a station suitable when one device exceeds its own continuous or surge limits.

What size power station do common use cases need?

There is no universal “fridge size” or “laptop size.” The correct capacity depends on the device’s measured draw, duty cycle, desired hours, and whether other loads share the station. Use these procedures rather than a category label.

Laptop and networking equipment

Read the charger or measure the laptop while it is doing the work you expect during an outage. Add the router, modem, monitor, or lighting that must remain on. USB-C or DC output may avoid an AC inverter conversion for compatible equipment, but confirm voltage and current ratings before connecting it. Calculate the combined Wh for the target duration and check the combined simultaneous W.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Refrigerator or freezer

Measure average energy over representative operation, because ambient temperature, contents, door openings, and compressor cycling change consumption. Check both running and startup requirements. Allow extra capacity for the reserve recommended above, and confirm that the station’s surge rating is specified for the required duration. If the refrigerator cycles more often than expected, the measured average—not a best-case estimate—should drive your next sizing decision.

Medical or other critical equipment

Use the equipment maker’s exact electrical requirements and any approved backup-power guidance. Plan for the full required operating period plus a reserve and a recharge method. Do not rely on a generic wattage estimate for equipment where interruption could cause harm; obtain a documented compatibility answer from the equipment and station manufacturers.

Compare stations on more than capacity

Comparison axis What to verify Decision implication
Rated Wh and estimated usable AC energy Published capacity and the maker’s runtime method Sets the approximate duration after losses.
Continuous and surge W Both ratings, plus surge duration if stated Determines whether loads run and motors start.
Average watts and duty cycle Measured or documented average for cycling appliances Produces a better Wh estimate than a peak label alone.
Charging inputs and speed AC charging time, vehicle input, solar input limits, and supported panel voltage/current Determines how quickly you can replenish the station and whether off-grid charging is practical.
Ports and compatibility AC outlet type, USB-C/USB-A ratings, DC voltage, and included adapters Prevents unsafe or inconvenient connections.
Weight, dimensions, handles, and wheels How the unit will be moved and stored Higher capacity may be less portable; mobility is part of fit.
Battery age, condition, and temperature limits Operating range and expected performance over time Real capacity can differ from a new-unit estimate.

  1. Add the Wh column for the planned period.
  2. Divide by the chosen planning efficiency (0.8 or 0.85 when those are the only available manufacturer-style estimates).
  3. Increase the result by your chosen 20–30% planning buffer.
  4. Add the watts of devices that overlap and compare with continuous output.
  5. Check every motor or compressor against the surge rating.
  6. Confirm ports, voltage, charging inputs, solar compatibility, dimensions, and weight.

For variable loads, replace assumptions with a measured average or a model-specific estimate. Keep the measurement period long enough to include normal cycling rather than a brief low-load snapshot.

Charging and off-grid planning

Capacity only describes stored energy; repeated use requires a way to refill it. Compare AC charging time, vehicle charging support, and solar-input specifications. Solar panels are not automatically interchangeable: verify the station’s allowed input voltage, current, connector, and maximum wattage. If your use case is an outage lasting several days, calculate daily consumption and confirm that expected charging conditions can replace that energy between use periods.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fast charging can reduce downtime but may require a suitable wall circuit or the manufacturer’s specified accessories. A larger station that cannot be recharged in your available window may be less useful than a smaller station with a workable replenishment plan.

Common sizing mistakes and fixes

Choosing by Wh alone

Symptom: the display shows plenty of percentage remaining, but a device will not start. Fix: check continuous and surge output against the device’s running and startup demand.

Multiplying a refrigerator’s nameplate watts by every hour

Symptom: the estimate is far larger than observed use, or you make a purchase based on an unrealistic duty cycle. Fix: measure average energy over representative operation and include environmental conditions.

Ignoring inverter losses

Symptom: actual AC runtime is shorter than rated Wh divided by watts. Fix: use the station maker’s planning factor, or compare 0.8 and 0.85 as estimates, then add a reserve.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Running every device at once

Symptom: overload protection shuts the station down when several appliances start together. Fix: add simultaneous watts, stagger startup where appropriate, and choose a higher continuous and surge rating when staggering is impractical.

Forgetting temperature and battery age

Symptom: a station that met the original calculation delivers less runtime later or in harsh weather. Fix: keep the planning buffer, follow the maker’s storage and temperature guidance, and recalculate for critical applications.

Final selection checklist

  • Have you measured or documented every device’s average watts?
  • Have you calculated Wh for the actual number of hours required?
  • Did you account for duty cycling instead of assuming continuous rated draw?
  • Did you apply an efficiency factor and add a 20–30% planning reserve?
  • Is continuous output above the highest simultaneous running load?
  • Is surge output adequate for every motor or compressor?
  • Are the ports, voltage, adapters, charging inputs, and solar limits compatible?
  • Can you move and store the unit, and can you recharge it within your available time?

The best capacity is therefore the smallest station that clears all three tests: sufficient loss-adjusted Wh for the required duration, sufficient continuous and surge W for the loads, and a charging and portability design that fits the way you will use it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many watt-hours do I need for a laptop?

Measure the laptop’s average draw, multiply by the hours required, divide by a planning efficiency such as 0.8 or 0.85, and add a reserve. Include any router, monitor, or lights that will run at the same time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How long will a portable power station run my devices?

Use estimated runtime ≈ rated Wh × planning efficiency ÷ average device W. For several devices, calculate their combined energy and check their combined simultaneous watts. Actual runtime varies by model, load, temperature, and battery condition.
