Choose a Pokémon costume by body measurements, not the age printed on the package. Measure the wearer, compare every measurement with the chart for the exact character and listing, and select a size that contains the largest limiting measurement. Height and chest are essential; waist, hips and inseam decide whether a one-piece jumpsuit is actually wearable.
Why Pokémon costume sizing is difficult
There is no single Pokémon-wide size standard. A Pikachu romper, a Charizard hooded jumpsuit and an Ash trainer outfit can come from different manufacturers, use different cuts and offer different size ranges. Even two costumes marked for the same age can have different height, chest and waist limits. The size chart attached to the exact product page is therefore the controlling information.
Age labels are useful for finding the general section of a chart, but they are not a substitute for measurements. Children grow at different rates, and a costume that fits in the shoulders may be too short in the torso or legs. Adults often have the opposite problem: a listed chest range may fit while the waist, hips or inseam makes a jumpsuit uncomfortable. Treat the package age as a starting point, then check the numbers.
Measure the wearer before opening the costume package
What you need
- A flexible fabric tape measure is easiest.
- If you do not have one, use a shoelace or a strip from a trouser leg, mark the overlap, and measure that length with a ruler or rigid tape.
- Measure over the type of clothing the wearer will normally put under the costume, such as a T-shirt or thin pajamas. Bulky layers can change the result substantially.
- Record measurements in the same units used by the listing. The representative Disguise charts below use inches unless stated otherwise; one Costume Shop listing uses centimeters as well as inches.
Height
Have the child stand barefoot or in the socks they will wear with the costume, with heels against a wall and eyes facing forward. Place a flat object at the top of the head, mark the wall, and measure straight from the floor to the mark. Target’s Disguise instructions describe an at-home variation: have the child stand in front of a refrigerator, mark the top of the head with a magnet, and measure a straight line from the floor to that mark. Keep the tape vertical; an angled tape understates height.

Chest
Wrap the tape around the fullest part of the chest and shoulder blades. Keep it level all the way around and snug without compressing the body. For an adult, keep the arms at the sides while measuring. A chest measurement taken across the front of the body, rather than around it, cannot be compared with a costume chart.
Waist
Find the point where the torso bends naturally when the wearer leans to one side. Measure around that point with the tape level and comfortably loose. Do not pull the tape tight or measure only where a belt usually sits. A tight waist reading can lead to a jumpsuit that closes on paper but restricts sitting, bending or using the restroom.
Hips and seat
Measure around the fullest part of the hips and buttocks, keeping the tape horizontal. This matters for fitted jumpsuits, shorts and costumes with a sewn-in lower half. If a product chart includes hips, use that field even when chest and waist appear to fit.
Inseam
Measure from the crotch seam to the bottom of a pair of well-fitting pants. Keep the leg straight and follow the inside seam. Inseam is especially important for one-piece costumes: a child can match the height range but still find the legs too short, while an adult can have a comfortable chest and an unusably long or short leg.

Use the exact product chart, not a generic Pokémon size guess
Write the wearer’s measurements beside the product’s chart and compare every field the seller provides. Select a size whose stated range includes the largest limiting measurement. For example, if chest fits a medium but height reaches the large range, a large is the safer starting point for a jumpsuit; then check whether the larger garment’s waist and inseam are acceptable. Never assume a size is available merely because a chart shows it—individual character listings may omit sizes shown in a manufacturer’s general chart.

The following figures are examples published in Target’s Disguise children’s chart; the chart says all sizes are in inches unless otherwise stated. They are not a universal Pokémon standard, and the year of the chart is not stated.

Notice why an age-only choice is risky. The boys and girls medium rows both say 7–8, yet their chest, waist, hip, height and weight ranges differ. A child near the boundary should be matched against all available fields rather than assigned a medium because of age.

Those entries show another limitation of abbreviated charts: some sizes list only height and weight. When chest, waist, hips or inseam are not published, inspect product photographs, construction details and the seller’s fit or return terms, and do not infer missing dimensions from another costume.

The adult chart published on Target lists chest, waist, hips, inseam, height and weight ranges. Its height ranges are product-chart values, not a guarantee of sleeve or torso ease.

The gaps between rows are not errors to fill with an assumed standard. For instance, the listed L row has a 40–42-inch waist, while L/XL starts at 38 inches; use the exact row and product availability rather than trying to normalize the labels.
Product-specific examples: Ash and Pikachu
Ash children’s costume
The Costume Shop’s Pokémon Ash kids listing gives measurements in centimeters and inches. Its XS is for ages 3–4, with height up to 104 cm (41 in), chest up to 54 cm (21 in) and waist up to 56 cm (22 in). Its Large is for ages 8–10, with height up to 140 cm (55 in), chest 71 cm (28 in) and waist 66 cm (26 in). These are limits for that listing, not a conversion rule for other Ash costumes.

The Costume Shop’s adult Pikachu listing specifies a chest of 30–36 inches, waist of 30–32 inches and height up to 1.80 m (5 ft 11 in). It does not establish the fit of every adult Pikachu design. Compare those limits with your own measurements and verify what the listing includes before ordering.

A practical size-selection procedure
- Identify the exact costume. Record the character, seller, product name and whether it is a jumpsuit, dress, robe or separate top and bottom. Different cuts can have different charts.
- Take the measurements. For a child, record height, chest, waist, hips and inseam when the chart requests them. For an adult, record chest and waist first, then hips, inseam, height and weight whenever listed.
- Match units. Convert centimeters to inches only when necessary, and keep the original value beside the conversion so a rounding difference does not change the selected row.
- Mark every range that contains the wearer. Do not stop after chest. A single measurement outside the range can make a closed costume unwearable.
- Use the largest limiting measurement. If the wearer falls between sizes, choose the size that accommodates the measurement most difficult to alter—usually height, torso length, chest or hips in a one-piece garment.
- Check the garment construction. Look for a back zipper, elastic waist, adjustable straps, cuffs, detachable hood and footwear openings. These features affect how much tolerance the costume has, but do not replace a missing chart measurement.
- Confirm availability and terms. Make sure the selected size is actually offered for that character and read the current return or exchange conditions before removing tags.
How costume type changes the fit decision
Hooded jumpsuits and one-piece suits
Prioritize height, chest, torso length and inseam. A child may fit the weight range but outgrow the torso, causing a zipper to pull at the neck or crotch. Adults should sit, bend and raise their arms during an at-home try-on while wearing the intended base layer. If the listing provides no torso or inseam data, treat that uncertainty as a reason to favor a documented return option, not as permission to guess.
Dresses, tunics and robes
Chest and shoulder width generally control whether the upper garment can be worn comfortably. Check waist and hip measurements when the design narrows below the chest. A loose robe may tolerate more variation than a fitted dress, but sleeves, closures and hood openings still need to clear the wearer’s measurements.
Separate tops, bottoms and accessories
When a costume has separate pieces, compare the top with chest and the bottom with waist, hips and inseam rather than selecting one size from a single label. Check whether gloves, hats, masks, tails or shoe covers are included or sold separately; an accessory’s size may follow a different chart. The product description, not a character image, determines what arrives in the package.

Borderline cases and growing children
For a child close to a boundary, measure twice on different days and use the larger consistent result. Compare height, chest, waist, hips and inseam together. Choosing up can provide growing room, but excessive length can create a tripping hazard, obscure vision through a hood or leave cuffs underfoot. Choosing down can produce a neater silhouette but may prevent layering and shorten the useful life of the costume.

Do not add an invented “ease allowance.” The published charts do not establish a universal amount of extra room, and a plush Pokémon suit may be intentionally oversized while a molded or fitted costume is not. Use the garment photographs and construction notes only as supporting evidence after the numerical chart.
Common sizing mistakes and fixes
- Relying on age alone: replace the age guess with height and chest, then check the remaining fields.
- Measuring the chest too tightly: keep the tape level and snug, not compressive; remeasure with arms at the sides.
- Holding the waist tape where a belt sits: bend sideways to find the natural flex point and measure comfortably loose.
- Ignoring the seat or inseam: compare hips and inside-leg length whenever a jumpsuit or fitted bottom is involved.
- Assuming all sizes are stocked: verify that the specific character listing offers the chosen row.
- Comparing centimeters and inches without checking: retain the unit shown by the seller and avoid rounding a borderline measurement downward.
- Trying on over bulky clothes: use the intended base layer for the first fit check; add warmth only if the chart and construction leave room.
- Removing tags immediately: inspect closures, movement and visibility first, while the seller’s stated return conditions still apply.
Safety and comfort checks after delivery
Before a child wears the costume to a party or event, check that the hood does not block peripheral vision, the mask allows normal breathing, and no trailing fabric reaches the floor. Confirm that zippers, snaps and elastic do not pinch when the wearer sits. Test walking, climbing a step and using the restroom. Keep small accessories away from children who may put them in their mouths, and follow any age warnings printed on the package.
Printable Pokémon costume sizing checklist
- Exact character and product listing identified.
- Chart saved or printed with its units and size labels.
- Height measured vertically from floor to head.
- Chest measured around the fullest area, level and snug.
- Waist measured at the natural flex point, level and comfortably loose.
- Hips measured around the fullest hips and seat.
- Inseam measured along a well-fitting trouser seam.
- Weight recorded only when the product chart requests it.
- Largest limiting measurement matched to a listed size.
- Selected size confirmed as available for that exact costume.
- Included pieces, accessory sizing and return conditions checked.
- Fit tested for movement, visibility and safe length before the event.
Bottom line
The right Pokémon costume size is the one whose exact product chart accommodates the wearer’s largest limiting measurement—not necessarily the size associated with the wearer’s age. Measure accurately, prioritize height and chest, verify waist, hips and inseam for one-piece designs, and confirm the individual listing’s availability and return terms before ordering.
