For one Nintendo Account, choose standard Individual. It covers compatible online multiplayer, cloud saves for supported games, the NES, Super NES and Game Boy libraries, Nintendo Music on a smart device, and member offers. Choose standard Family when two to eight Nintendo Accounts can stay in one Nintendo Account family group. Choose Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack only if the household will use its additional classic-game libraries, included downloadable content (DLC), or Nintendo Switch 2 benefits.

The prices below are Nintendo’s published U.S. prices for 2026. Nintendo says pricing depends on the country where the membership is used, so check the Nintendo eShop or Nintendo Account page for your local price before paying.

The short answer: which plan fits which player?

The right membership is determined by three questions: how many Nintendo Accounts need coverage, which content you will actually use, and whether anyone in the group plays on Nintendo Switch 2. Standard Individual is the least expensive choice for a single account. Standard Family is the value choice for a family group with at least two accounts that need the service. Expansion Pack is a content upgrade, not a requirement for ordinary online play.

  • Choose standard Individual for one account that needs online play, supported-game cloud saves, and the standard classic-game catalog.
  • Choose standard Family for two to eight accounts that can belong to one Nintendo Account family group.
  • Choose Expansion Pack Individual when one account will use Game Boy Advance, Nintendo 64, Virtual Boy or SEGA Genesis games, included DLC, or the Switch 2 additions.
  • Choose Expansion Pack Family when several accounts in the same family group will use those extra libraries or benefits.

Do not pay for Expansion Pack merely to unlock online multiplayer. Standard membership already supplies that benefit for compatible games.

Plans and current U.S. prices

Nintendo publishes separate Individual and Family memberships. The Family option covers every account in the purchaser’s family group, up to eight Nintendo Accounts; it is not a single login shared by several people. The U.S. prices listed by Nintendo for 2026 are:

Plan Term shown by Nintendo U.S. price Best fit
Standard Individual 1 month $3.99 One account testing the service or needing a short commitment
Standard Individual 3 months $7.99 One account needing more than a month without buying a full year
Standard Individual 12 months $19.99 One account using online play and standard benefits throughout the year
Standard Family 12 months $34.99 Two to eight accounts in one family group
Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack Individual 12 months $49.99 One account that needs the expanded libraries, DLC or Switch 2 additions
Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack Family 12 months $79.99 Several accounts in one family group that will use Expansion Pack content

These are published U.S. amounts, not a worldwide price list. Nintendo states that the country where the membership is used determines pricing. A local eShop or Nintendo Account checkout page is the authoritative amount for your region.

What the prices mean per month

Dividing the U.S. annual prices by 12 gives useful comparisons, although Nintendo bills the annual plans as one 12-month purchase: standard Individual is about $1.67 per month, standard Family is about $2.92 per month for the entire group, Expansion Pack Individual is about $4.17 per month, and Expansion Pack Family is about $6.67 per month for the group. These are arithmetic comparisons, not separate monthly billing options.

The one-month and three-month terms appear in Nintendo’s U.S. table only for standard Individual. The published Expansion Pack amounts in that table are 12-month prices.

What every standard membership includes

Standard Nintendo Switch Online is sufficient for the core service most Switch owners are seeking. Nintendo lists these benefits:

Compatible online multiplayer

You can use online features in games that support Nintendo Switch Online. Compatibility is determined by each game’s requirements, so membership does not turn a single-player title into an online game. Check the individual game’s product information when online play is the deciding factor.

Save Data Cloud for supported games

Save Data Cloud backs up saves for games that support the feature. Nintendo does not promise cloud backup for every title; the game must be compatible. Before relying on a backup, verify support for the specific game and understand that cloud storage is tied to the Nintendo Account with the membership.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

NES, Super NES and Game Boy games

Standard members receive access to Nintendo’s curated libraries for NES, Super NES and Game Boy. “Curated” matters: the service is a selected catalog, not a guarantee that every game from those systems is available. The library can change as Nintendo adds or removes titles.

Nintendo Music on a smart device

Nintendo lists Nintendo Music as a membership benefit on a smart device. The smartphone app has age, smartphone, internet and regional requirements. Confirm that your device and region meet those requirements before treating the app as part of the value you will use.

$50 Nintendo eShop Gift Card [Digital Code]
  • This item can be redeemed on eShop only. This item cannot be redeemed on the Wii Shop
  • The perfect gift for anyone who loves to play—including you. Choose from over 1,000 new, classic and indie games – delivered directly to your Nintendo Switch, Wii U or Nintendo 3DS family of systems.
  • Nintendo eShop Digital Cards are redeemable only through the Nintendo eShop on the Nintendo Switch, Wii U, and Nintendo 3DS family of systems.
  • Digital Card balances can be shared across Nintendo Switch, Wii U and Nintendo 3DS family of systems, but may only be used on a single Nintendo eShop account.

Special offers

Standard membership also includes Nintendo member offers. Offers can vary by time and region, so they should be treated as an occasional extra rather than a predictable discount when comparing plans.

What Expansion Pack adds

Expansion Pack includes all standard benefits and adds larger classic-game libraries, selected DLC and Nintendo Switch 2-specific content.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Additional classic systems

Nintendo lists select games from Game Boy Advance, Nintendo 64, Virtual Boy and SEGA Genesis. “Select” is a limitation: the service provides Nintendo’s chosen titles, not a complete archive of any of those platforms. If you are considering Expansion Pack for one particular game, confirm that the title is currently in the library in your region.

Included downloadable content

Nintendo gives Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Booster Course Pass and Animal Crossing: New Horizons — Happy Home Paradise as examples of included DLC. The inclusion is a license benefit attached to an active membership, not ownership of the add-on. Nintendo says you must own the full version of the relevant game. If the membership ends, access to the included DLC pauses; renewing restores the membership benefit, but the base game is still required.

Nintendo Switch 2 benefits

Memberships work on compatible Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 systems, but some Expansion Pack benefits are exclusive to Switch 2. Nintendo lists select Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics titles and selected Nintendo Switch 2 Edition upgrade packs. A Switch 2 owner should therefore ask which specific additions they will use rather than assuming every Expansion Pack feature is available on the original Switch.

Individual or Family: the account-count decision

An Individual membership follows one Nintendo Account. It is the straightforward choice when one person plays online, needs cloud saves, or uses the classic libraries.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A Family membership covers the purchaser and up to seven other members of that purchaser’s Nintendo Account family group, for a maximum of eight accounts. Everyone who should receive the benefits must be in that group. The plan is annual in Nintendo’s published U.S. pricing table.

When Family is cheaper

For two accounts, standard Family costs $34.99 for 12 months, while two standard Individual annual memberships would total $39.98. The Family plan therefore saves $4.99 across those two accounts at the published U.S. prices. With three accounts, the comparison is $34.99 versus $59.97; with eight, it is $34.99 versus $159.92.

Expansion Pack Family costs $79.99 for 12 months. Two Expansion Pack Individual memberships would total $99.98, and eight would total $399.92. At eight accounts, dividing the Family price evenly produces $10 per person for the year. Nintendo describes standard Family at eight users as less than $5 per person per year and Expansion Pack Family as about $10 per person per year. Those descriptions assume a full eight-account group; they are not a universal individual price.

4 $79.96 $34.99 $199.96 $79.99
8 $159.92 $34.99 $399.92 $79.99

The table compares the published U.S. annual prices and assumes every listed account would otherwise buy its own annual Individual membership. It does not imply that each account has to contribute an equal amount or that Nintendo sells Family as per-person subscriptions.

When Individual remains preferable

Individual is simpler when only one account needs coverage, when the other accounts cannot remain in the same family group, or when you want a one- or three-month standard term. Do not buy a Family plan for hypothetical future users unless the extra accounts are actually eligible and expected to use it.

Is Expansion Pack worth the extra cost?

Compare the annual difference, then identify a benefit you will use repeatedly. In the U.S. table, Expansion Pack adds $30 per year to Individual ($49.99 versus $19.99) and $45 per year to Family ($79.99 versus $34.99).

Expansion Pack is a good fit when:

  • You regularly play the Game Boy Advance, Nintendo 64, Virtual Boy or SEGA Genesis selections.
  • You already own the base game for included DLC and would otherwise buy an add-on such as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Booster Course Pass or Animal Crossing: New Horizons — Happy Home Paradise.
  • You use Nintendo Switch 2 and want the selected GameCube – Nintendo Classics titles or Switch 2 Edition upgrade packs included with Expansion Pack.
  • Several family-group accounts will use those additions, making the Family price more efficient.

Standard is the better fit when:

  • Your priority is online multiplayer, supported-game cloud saves, NES, Super NES or Game Boy games.
  • You rarely play the extra systems and have no interest in the included DLC.
  • You use an original Switch and none of the Switch 2-only additions applies to you.
  • You prefer to pay $19.99 annually for one account or use the $3.99 monthly or $7.99 three-month standard term.

Do not count included DLC as a permanent purchase. Nintendo requires an active Expansion Pack membership for access, and the full game must be owned separately.

How Nintendo Switch 2 changes the choice

Nintendo Switch Online memberships can be used on compatible Switch and Switch 2 systems through the Nintendo Account linked to the membership. The console generation matters mainly because Expansion Pack has benefits that standard membership does not provide and because selected additions are Switch 2-only.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you own only an original Switch

Focus on online play, cloud-save compatibility, the standard libraries, and whether the additional GBA, N64, Virtual Boy or Genesis catalog justifies the annual upgrade. The Switch 2 GameCube and Switch 2 Edition benefits should not be part of your value calculation for an original Switch.

If you own a Switch 2

List the specific GameCube – Nintendo Classics titles and Switch 2 Edition upgrade packs you expect to use. Those selected additions can justify Expansion Pack, but ownership of a Switch 2 alone does not make the higher tier automatically worthwhile. If your use remains online multiplayer and standard cloud saves, standard membership may still meet your needs.

Trial, auto-renewal and term management

Seven-day trial

Nintendo’s seven-day trial converts to a one-month, auto-renewing standard membership at the then-current price unless you cancel it. The trial does not include Expansion Pack content. Set a reminder before the trial ends if you only want to test online features or the standard catalog.

Automatic renewal

Nintendo says memberships auto-renew after the initial term at the then-current price unless renewal is disabled. The price at your next renewal may not be the same as the price you paid today. Review the renewal setting in your Nintendo Account after purchase if you do not want another charge.

$70 Nintendo eShop Gift Card [Digital Code]

Short versus annual terms

At the published U.S. rates, three consecutive one-month standard Individual purchases would cost $11.97, while the three-month term costs $7.99. Twelve one-month purchases would cost $47.88, compared with $19.99 for the annual term. The annual plan has the lowest effective monthly cost, but a short term can make sense when you need coverage only for a particular trip, game season or trial period.

Switching between Individual and Family

Membership access follows the Nintendo Account, not a particular console. Family coverage applies to the accounts in the purchaser’s family group. Nintendo also documents restrictions when changing membership types: Individual and Family terms do not simply add together, and an account covered by an active Family membership cannot redeem an Individual code.

Before changing plans, identify which account currently owns the membership, which accounts are in the family group, and when the current term ends. Read the instructions shown in your Nintendo Account or Nintendo’s support documentation for the specific change you intend to make. Avoid buying a replacement code first if another active membership may block redemption.

A practical decision process

  1. Count the accounts. Write down every Nintendo Account that needs online play, cloud saves or library access. One points to Individual; two through eight point to Family if they can be in one family group.
  2. Separate must-haves from nice-to-haves. Mark online multiplayer, supported-game cloud saves, standard classic games, extra classic systems, DLC and Switch 2 additions independently.
  3. Check game compatibility. Confirm that each online game supports Nintendo Switch Online and each important title supports Save Data Cloud. For Expansion Pack, verify that the classic game or DLC you want is included.
  4. Check the console generation. If anyone uses Switch 2, decide whether the selected GameCube classics or Switch 2 Edition upgrade packs matter. Do not assign value to a Switch 2-only benefit for an account that cannot use it.
  5. Compare the annual totals. Use $19.99, $34.99, $49.99 and $79.99 only as U.S. 2026 reference prices. Replace them with the amount shown for your country before checkout.
  6. Choose the shortest sensible commitment. Standard Individual offers one-month, three-month and 12-month U.S. terms. Family and the published Expansion Pack prices are annual; select a full year only when the expected use supports it.
  7. Review renewal and account ownership. Confirm the purchasing account, family-group membership and auto-renewal setting. Save the renewal date in your calendar if you do not want an automatic charge.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Paying for Expansion Pack for ordinary online play

Expansion Pack includes standard benefits, but standard membership already covers compatible online multiplayer. Upgrade only for the additional libraries, included DLC or Switch 2 additions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming every game supports cloud saves

Save Data Cloud is limited to supported games. Check before treating membership as a complete backup strategy.

Confusing DLC access with DLC ownership

Included DLC is available while the qualifying membership is active and only when you own the full game. It is not a permanent copy added to your account.

Buying Family without checking the family group

Family benefits apply to the purchaser’s Nintendo Account family group, up to eight accounts. Confirm the intended accounts are in that group before purchasing.

Using U.S. prices as a global quote

Nintendo says prices depend on country. Treat the figures in this guide as U.S.-specific 2026 references and verify local checkout pricing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Forgetting the trial converts

The seven-day trial becomes a one-month auto-renewing membership at the then-current price unless canceled, and it does not test Expansion Pack content. Cancel or change renewal before the trial ends if that is not what you want.

Final selection checklist

  • One account, standard features: standard Individual.
  • Two to eight eligible accounts in one family group, standard features: standard Family.
  • One account needing extra classic systems, included DLC or Switch 2 additions: Expansion Pack Individual.
  • Several family-group accounts needing those same extras: Expansion Pack Family.
  • Uncertain about the service: use the seven-day trial only if you remember that it converts to a paid one-month membership unless canceled.

Check the local Nintendo eShop or Nintendo Account page immediately before purchase, confirm the account and family-group details, and disable auto-renewal if you do not want the membership to continue at the then-current price.
