If you want a road-running shoe for everyday training, Nike describes the Pegasus 42 as a responsive-cushioning option for everyday road runs. Whether it suits you depends on your training surface, preferred ride and fit—not just the Pegasus name. Nike’s product details provide useful specifications and fit guidance, but do not independently compare the 42 with other Pegasus models.

Is the Pegasus 42 suited to your training?

Nike identifies the Pegasus 42 as a road-running shoe and says its cushioning is intended for everyday road runs. That makes it a candidate to consider if your regular training is on roads and you want the responsive ride Nike describes. The product page does not establish that it is suitable for trail training, every training plan or every runner.

Nike attributes a propulsive feel to the shoe’s full-length Air Zoom unit. That is the manufacturer’s description, not an independent ride assessment. Consider whether that stated ride matches your preference, and try the shoe if possible before deciding.

What is different about the Pegasus 42?

Nike lists ReactX foam and a curved, full-length Air Zoom unit. The company says ReactX is 13% more responsive than previous React technology; this is Nike’s comparison, not an independently verified measurement. Nike also says earlier models used separate forefoot and heel Air Zoom units, while the 42 uses a full-length unit.

Nike says it updated the fit to provide more room at the toes and forefoot than the Pegasus 41. The product page’s listed specifications are:

  • Heel-to-toe drop: 10 mm.
  • Weight: approximately 300 g for the men’s US 10 shoe listed on Nike’s page. Weight is size-specific, so this figure should not be assumed for other sizes or versions.

These details describe the shoe; they do not establish how it will feel or perform for a particular runner.

  • We sculpted our full-length Air Zoom unit to deliver a propulsive feel and Nike's highest energy return from heel to toe-off.
  • ReactX foam is 13% more responsive than previous React technology.
  • Greater toe spring than previous model due to an updated silhouette that increases the curve of the toe box
  • Full-length Air Zoom unit compared to forefoot and heel Air Zoom units in previous models

How to check Pegasus 42 fit

Nike says most runners find the Pegasus 42 true to size, but that guidance is not a fit guarantee. Nike lists regular and wide options, where available. Use the try-on to judge the fit you actually get:

  1. Try your usual size first. Treat Nike’s true-to-size guidance as a starting point, not a reason to skip trying the shoe on.
  2. Check the toe box and forefoot. Make sure your toes have comfortable space; Nike says these areas have more room than in the Pegasus 41.
  3. Assess the overall hold. The shoe should feel secure on your foot as well as roomy enough at the front. If the regular option feels too narrow, try the wide option where it is offered.
  4. Judge the fit in the version you plan to buy. The cited listing covers one men’s colorway and does not establish model-specific fit guidance for women’s versions.

Should you choose another Pegasus model?

Nike’s product page also lists the Pegasus Plus 2 and Pegasus Premium, but does not compare their intended training use or fit with the Pegasus 42. The available information therefore does not support ranking those models or recommending one for a particular workout. Compare their specifications and fit directly before choosing if you are considering them.
