Choose an LED bulb by matching its base and shape to the fixture, selecting brightness by lumens, and choosing a color temperature that suits the room. Before buying, check the bulb’s dimensions and its stated compatibility with any dimmer, sensor, or enclosed fixture.
1. Check the fixture’s base, shape, and available space
Start by checking the bulb currently in the fixture or the fixture’s label or manual. Match the required base and bulb shape, then compare the replacement’s physical dimensions. Some LED bulbs are larger near the base than incandescent bulbs, so a bulb with the right base may still be too large for a compact fixture. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) covers these fit considerations in its 2022 home energy guide.
2. Choose brightness by lumens, not watts
Lumens measure the visible light a bulb emits; watts measure the electricity it uses. Compare lumens to choose the amount of light you want, then use wattage to understand energy use. DOE’s guide to lumens recommends comparing this output rather than treating watts as a brightness rating.
For a general-purpose A-type bulb with an E26 base, DOE’s Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) lists these example lumen levels and wattage ranges. They describe the LED replacements in that category, not a guaranteed wattage for every bulb that produces the same light.

| Light output | FEMP-listed LED wattage range |
|---|---|
| 450 lumens | 4.5–7 watts |
| 800 lumens | 5.9–10.5 watts |
| 1,100 lumens | 9.5–14 watts |
| 1,600 lumens | 10.5–18 watts |
These examples come from DOE FEMP’s purchasing guide. An 800-lumen LED is a useful starting comparison for a traditional 60-watt incandescent replacement, but the LED wattage varies by product. Check the package for the bulb’s actual output and power use.
3. Pick a color temperature that looks right
Color temperature, expressed in kelvins (K), describes whether the light looks warmer and yellower or cooler and bluer. It does not measure brightness. Lower values look warmer; higher values look cooler. DOE FEMP gives these typical examples:

| Color temperature | DOE example description |
|---|---|
| 2,700 K | Warm |
| 3,000 K | Soft or warm |
| 3,500 K | Neutral |
| 4,100 K | Cool |
DOE describes 2,700–3,000 K as common warm residential light. These descriptions are guidance, not a rule about which color belongs in every room. If you are replacing a bulb and want the room to look much as it did before, choose a similar color temperature. The examples are from DOE FEMP’s bulb-purchasing guidance.
4. Consider color rendering where it matters
Color rendering affects how accurately a light source shows the colors of objects. DOE describes the Color Rendering Index (CRI) as a scale from 0 to 100. Its guidance says the ENERGY STAR-qualified bulbs it discusses require a CRI of at least 80. If accurate-looking colors are important for a particular task or room, compare the bulb’s CRI and check the claims on its packaging. See DOE FEMP’s explanation of bulb specifications.

- GREAT ATMOSPHERE: Enjoy daylight white light bulbs that create a bright, crisp atmosphere for any room
- STANDARD FIT: The E26 standard base provides compatibility with most fixtures, making it easy to install these LED bulbs in lamps and overhead lighting
5. Verify compatibility with the fixture and controls
Enclosed fixtures
Heat inside a fully enclosed fixture can affect some LED bulbs. Check the bulb’s packaging or technical specifications for explicit approval for enclosed-fixture use. DOE FEMP advises buyers to verify this rather than assume every LED is suitable. Its bulb-purchasing guide explains the check.
Dimmers and sensors
If the fixture is controlled by a dimmer, confirm that the bulb is labeled dimmable and compatible with the actual dimming system. Likewise, check the packaging for suitability with a motion sensor or other sensor control. The word “LED” alone does not establish compatibility; consult the bulb and control manufacturers’ specifications.

6. Compare the package details before choosing
Once you have candidates that fit, compare their output, color, power use, and stated compatibility. DOE says the Lighting Facts label on medium screw-base bulbs includes brightness, estimated energy cost, life expectancy, light appearance, wattage, and mercury content. Use the information on the specific product to compare candidates; a stated lifetime is a product specification, not a guarantee that every bulb will last the same amount of time in every fixture. DOE FEMP’s guide to energy-efficient bulbs describes the label and selection factors.
