Check that it supports your source’s PAL, NTSC or other video standard, and select an HDMI output mode your display accepts. A 720p or 1080p output setting changes the signal sent over HDMI; it cannot restore detail that was never present in the composite picture.
Start by matching the source and display connections
Look at the source device’s output sockets and the display’s inputs. A typical composite connection uses one yellow RCA plug for video and red and white plugs for left and right audio. If the display has HDMI input but no composite input, the converter must accept those analog signals and send HDMI to the display.
Look for wording such as “RCA to HDMI,” “AV to HDMI” or “composite to HDMI.” Check the labeled input and output ports in the product specifications or photos: the three RCA sockets should be inputs, and the HDMI socket should be an output. For example, AVSL’s model 128.511UK lists three RCA inputs for CVBS video and left/right audio, with HDMI output.
Do not buy the reverse direction
Direction matters even when a product has the same kinds of sockets. An HDMI-to-composite converter takes HDMI from a newer device and outputs analog video; it will not connect a composite-output VCR to an HDMI-only television. AGPtek states that its AV-to-HDMI converter cannot work in reverse, and Cirago documents a separate HDMI-input-to-RCA-output product.

Confirm it is composite, not component
RCA describes the plug style, not a single video format. Composite sends video on one yellow lead. Component video sends video over three separate leads, commonly green, blue and red, and is not interchangeable with composite on a converter that accepts CVBS only. Audio may use additional red and white leads in either setup, so identify the video connections rather than counting plugs alone. PORTTA’s compatibility notes distinguish yellow/red/white composite from green/blue/red component for its listed converter.
Check the source’s video standard
Analog video standards vary by source and region, and converter support is model-specific. Do not assume that a broad “PAL/NTSC compatible” label covers every variant. Check the source device’s documentation or video-output setting, then compare it with the exact converter’s supported-format list.

These are the formats each vendor lists for its product, not a guarantee that every source or regional variant will work. If the source has a selectable output standard, set it to a format the converter explicitly supports.
Choose an HDMI output resolution for compatibility
Resolution figures on these converters describe the HDMI output timing, not the detail of the original analog recording or game. A converter can digitize and scale a composite signal to an HDMI mode such as 720p or 1080p, but scaling does not recreate fine detail missing from the source. Adafruit makes this limitation explicit on its product page.

Use the available output mode that your TV or monitor accepts. Models differ: StarTech’s cited converter supports up to 720p at 60 Hz, while AVSL’s listed model specifies 720p or 1080p at 60 Hz. Those advertised specifications are not a controlled picture-quality comparison, so they do not establish that one model produces a sharper image.
If a picture is absent or unstable, check the converter’s instructions for changing its output mode and try another supported setting. Do not assume that selecting 1080p must improve the picture; display compatibility is the relevant choice.

Verify power, audio and aspect-ratio behavior
RCA-to-HDMI units are active converters and require power. Check what the exact listing supplies and whether you have a compatible power source if it is not included. For examples of differing arrangements, AVSL specifies 5 V DC via mini-USB and includes a USB power cable; Adafruit lists a 5 V/1 A power supply; and StarTech specifies an included AC adapter. Product revisions and included accessories can change, so verify the current listing.
Check that the converter sends the red/white stereo audio into HDMI, and that the television or monitor routes HDMI audio to its speakers. If you see a picture but hear nothing, check the source’s audio outputs and volume, the RCA audio connections, and the display’s selected audio output.

Composite sources commonly use a 4:3 picture shape. Adafruit notes that its converter does not automatically letterbox 4:3 output and that horizontal scaling may need adjustment on the TV or monitor. If preserving the original proportions matters, check the converter and display’s aspect-ratio controls rather than assuming the image will be letterboxed automatically.
Use this purchase checklist
- Direction: RCA/composite input to HDMI output.
- Video type: yellow CVBS composite input, not component-only input.
- Standard: the exact PAL, NTSC, SECAM or variant required by the source.
- Output mode: a supported HDMI timing and refresh rate for the display; higher resolution is not a promise of added source detail.
- Power: the required supply and whether it is included.
- Audio: stereo audio input and a complete HDMI-to-speaker path.
- Picture shape: any needed 4:3, scaling or letterboxing controls.
These checks apply whether connecting a VCR, DVD player or older console: buy for the source’s actual output, not merely for the shape of its plugs.
