For many adults buying a first inflatable paddleboard for general recreation, a sensible place to start is an all-round board about 10’6″–10’8″ long and roughly 32″ wide. Treat that as a retailer’s rule of thumb, not a fit guarantee: compare your weight and everything you plan to carry with the exact board’s optimal or recommended paddler weight and maximum load. Then adjust for your activity, balance, and preferred trade-off between stability, speed, and maneuverability.
Start with the kind of paddling you plan to do
Board size is only useful in context. An all-round shape is a practical first-board category for general recreational paddling; a touring or surf board is designed around a different use and should not be selected by applying a beginner all-round size range mechanically.
General recreation and a first board
The SUP Company describes 10’6″–10’8″ long and around 32″ wide as typical dimensions for many adult beginners. Its guidance is a starting point, not a universal standard. A board’s shape, construction, and maker’s weight guidance also affect fit. See The SUP Company’s paddleboard sizing guide.
Extra stability, passengers, dogs, or gear
If you are a nervous beginner, expect to carry extra gear, or want room for family use, compare wider options. The SUP Company suggests considering 33″–34″ or wider for added stability or heavier paddlers. That is vendor guidance, not a promise that a particular board will suit every rider or load. Account for passengers and equipment when you check capacity.

Touring and distance
Touring boards are generally longer and intended to provide speed and glide over distance. Decathlon’s guide says they require better balance and are intended for more experienced paddlers, so a longer touring shape may be a poor first choice if stability and easy handling matter most. Surfing
Surf-specific boards are shorter and shaped for waves. Their proportions can differ substantially from all-round boards: Decathlon’s support page for a 2019 surf-board line lists a 9-foot model at 32″ wide and a 10-foot model at 31″ wide. Match your weight to both capacity figures
Do not treat a board’s maximum load as its recommended paddler weight. Decathlon’s size guide lists “optimal weight of paddler(s)” separately from “max load.” The first is the maker’s guidance for paddler weight; the second is the stated total load limit. Check both, and include any passenger, dog, food, water, and other gear in the total carried load.

Decathlon’s published specifications show how different those numbers can be. They are manufacturer specifications, not independent performance measurements; the guide does not state a publication year, and specifications or availability may change. Confirm the current manual and listing for the exact board before buying.

These examples are not interchangeable recommendations. For instance, a large maximum load does not mean that the optimal paddler-weight figure can be ignored. Use the model’s own guidance, and leave room for the weight of everything you bring aboard.

Balance stability against speed and handling
- Width and stability: The cited buying guides describe wider boards as more stable or balanced. That can make a wider shape appealing if you are new, want extra confidence, or expect to carry a load.
- Speed and glide: Longer touring shapes are intended for distance and speed. Their advantages may matter less than balance and ease of use for a first recreational board.
- Maneuverability: Decathlon describes shorter boards as easier to maneuver. Consider where you will paddle and whether you value quick handling over covering distance.
- Skill and conditions: Decathlon directs beginners toward all-round boards and calm water, while touring and performance-oriented designs call for more balance or experience.
Width is a trade-off rather than a simple “wider is always better” rule: Decathlon notes that greater width can make a board slower to paddle. Compare the board’s whole design and intended use instead of choosing by one dimension.
Use the exact model’s specifications before you buy
- Choose the activity category. For general recreation, begin by comparing all-round inflatables. Look at touring boards for distance only if their balance demands suit your experience; use a surf-specific shape for waves.
- Check dimensions and maker guidance. Compare length and width with your intended use, then find the exact model’s optimal or recommended paddler weight and maximum load in its current listing or manual.
- Add up the full load. Include paddler or paddlers, passengers, a dog, and the gear and supplies you will carry. Compare that total with the stated maximum load, while also respecting the model’s paddler-weight guidance.
- Check setup requirements. Follow the exact board’s recommended inflation pressure and instructions; pressure figures vary by model, as the Decathlon examples show.
- Decide which trade-off matters most. Favor stability and all-round versatility for a first recreational board; consider the speed and glide of a longer touring design or the handling of a shorter surf shape only when those match your plans and skill.
Manufacturer specifications are more useful than generic size charts once you have narrowed the category. Retailer and manufacturer ranges are guidance, not a substitute for the exact board’s instructions.
