For most Indian buyers, start with the Hyundai CRETA Electric. Its two battery choices, familiar SUV format, substantially lower price and 7.4 kW home-charging setup fit everyday city use and occasional highways. Choose the Hyundai IONIQ 5 instead when its premium price is justified by a much larger battery, up to 690 km ARAI-certified range in the 2026 model, more equipment and high-speed DC charging. The right choice depends less on the badge than on your parking power supply, regular route and annual kilometres.

Hyundai’s electric cars in India at a glance

Hyundai’s current India line-up gives buyers two very different propositions rather than two close substitutes. The CRETA Electric is the practical, locally relevant electric SUV for daily commuting, family use and mixed city-highway driving. The IONIQ 5 is a premium electric crossover built around a larger battery, greater long-distance reserves and more advanced equipment.

Model Battery choices or current battery Published certified range Published starting price in India Best suited to
Hyundai CRETA Electric 42 kWh or 51.4 kWh 420 km (42 kWh) and 510 km (51.4 kWh) ARAI figures in Hyundai’s 2026 ownership release; a separate Hyundai buying guide quotes up to 473 km for the long-range version ₹18,02,200 on Hyundai India’s electric-car page; Hyundai’s July 2, 2026 BaaS announcement gives a ₹10.99 lakh starting vehicle price before the distance-linked battery payment Most buyers, city families, apartment or independent-home owners who can install overnight AC charging
Hyundai IONIQ 5 (updated 2026 model) 84.0 kWh Up to 690 km ARAI-certified, according to Hyundai’s April 28, 2026 release ₹55,70,000 on Hyundai India’s electric-car page Premium buyers who drive long intercity routes, want fewer charging stops and value equipment and faster DC capability

Prices are Hyundai India published starting figures and can vary by trim, location, taxes, registration and model year. Confirm the current brochure and dealer quotation before placing an order. Range certification is also variant-specific: do not treat the CRETA Electric’s 420 km, 473 km and 510 km statements as interchangeable.

Which Hyundai EV should you choose?

Choose the CRETA Electric for the broadest fit

The CRETA Electric is the sensible default when your driving is mostly urban, your household needs an easy-to-place SUV and your budget does not stretch to a ₹55.70 lakh premium car. Hyundai offers a 42 kWh battery and a 51.4 kWh battery. The smaller pack can suit a predictable commute with home charging; the larger pack is the safer choice if you regularly cover long daily distances or use highways where chargers are sparse.

Hyundai’s ownership material lists ARAI ranges of 420 km for the 42 kWh version and 510 km for the 51.4 kWh version. Hyundai’s 2026 buying guide separately says the long-range configuration can reach up to 473 km. Those figures come from different Hyundai materials and certification or variant contexts. Use the exact number printed for the trim and model year you are buying, then plan with a real-world buffer for speed, temperature, traffic, air-conditioning, payload and hills.

Choose the IONIQ 5 when range and premium capability matter more than price

The IONIQ 5 makes sense for buyers who can absorb its much higher price and want a larger battery reserve, a more premium cabin and less frequent charging on long journeys. Hyundai’s April 28, 2026 announcement specifies an 84.0 kWh battery and up to 690 km ARAI-certified range for the updated model. Hyundai’s earlier buying material described a 72.6 kWh version and approximately 18-minute 10–80% DC charging on a 350 kW charger; that is a prior specification, not the current 84.0 kWh headline.

Do not buy the IONIQ 5 solely for its laboratory range. If your trips are short and you already have overnight charging, the extra battery capacity may deliver little practical value. Its advantage becomes clearer when a 400–600 km route has limited reliable stops, when you carry a full load or when you want to spend less time waiting at high-power DC sites.

Match battery size to your Indian driving pattern

Start with kilometres, not the maximum range number

  1. Record your typical weekday distance for at least two weeks, including school runs, errands and detours.
  2. Identify your longest monthly trip and your usual intercity routes.
  3. Check the charger locations on those routes before deciding that a larger battery is necessary.
  4. Keep a reserve rather than planning to arrive at a charger with a nearly empty battery. A practical reserve is especially important in heavy monsoon traffic, extreme heat, mountain sections and routes with only one usable station.

For example, a 60 km daily commute does not require a 690 km-certified vehicle if you can plug in every night. Conversely, a driver covering 250–300 km in a day several times each month may value the 51.4 kWh CRETA Electric or the IONIQ 5 because it reduces the number of stops and gives more flexibility when a public charger is occupied or offline.

Understand certified range versus trip range

  • Certified range: A laboratory result used for comparison; Hyundai labels the quoted figures ARAI-certified.
  • Trip range: What your car can achieve on a particular route. Sustained high speed, gradients, cold or very hot weather, tyre pressure, roof loads and cabin cooling reduce it.
  • Usable planning range: The portion you are comfortable using before charging. Set this from your own route and reserve policy rather than dividing the certified number by a fixed percentage.

The CRETA Electric’s 420 km and 510 km ARAI figures and the separate 473 km Hyundai guide figure should therefore be read as published reference points, not promises of a fixed odometer distance in every Indian city.

Home charging: the decision that matters most

CRETA Electric AC charging

Hyundai specifies 7.4 kW AC charging for the CRETA Electric. Its specification page estimates roughly 6 hours or 7 hours 15 minutes for a 10–100% charge, depending on configuration. Hyundai’s BaaS announcement says Home Charger variants include a 7.4 kW wallbox charger. Overnight charging is the most convenient and usually the most predictable way to own the car.

Situation What to verify before ordering Why it matters
Independent house Dedicated circuit, sanctioned load, earthing, cable route and wallbox location Prevents nuisance tripping, unsafe extensions and installation delays
Apartment parking Written permission from the society or facility manager, meter arrangement and access to the electrical riser A parking slot alone does not guarantee permission or power
Shared or rented parking Who owns the charger, who pays for electricity, whether the cable can remain secured and how you will obtain approval Clarifies recurring costs and avoids disputes when you move
Older building or low-load connection Electrician or utility assessment of sanctioned load, phase capacity, protection devices and earthing A 7.4 kW load can exceed what an existing domestic circuit can safely provide

How long does a Hyundai EV take to charge at home?

For the CRETA Electric, Hyundai’s estimate is about 6 hours or 7 hours 15 minutes from 10% to 100% with the specified 7.4 kW AC system, depending on the configuration. A real session can take longer if the supply is limited, the battery is cold or hot, charging is throttled near full, or the wallbox is sharing a circuit. The IONIQ 5’s current 84.0 kWh model should be assessed using the exact charger and time figures in the current Hyundai brochure; do not transfer the CRETA’s 7.4 kW estimates to it.

Wallbox buying checklist

  • Confirm that the wallbox connector and communication standard match the vehicle and the installer’s supply equipment.
  • Use a dedicated, properly protected circuit with suitable cable sizing, residual-current protection and earthing.
  • Ask who handles installation, civil work, cable runs, load upgrades and future service calls.
  • Get the warranty terms for both the charger and installation in writing.
  • Do not rely on a domestic extension lead as a permanent substitute for a correctly installed wallbox.

Public DC charging and highway planning

CRETA Electric charging stop

Hyundai’s ownership release says the CRETA Electric can charge from 10% to 80% in about 39 minutes. The actual time depends on the charger’s power, battery temperature, the car’s state of charge and whether another vehicle is sharing the site. The 39-minute statement is a Hyundai-published estimate, not a guarantee at every public station.

Finding a usable charger

Hyundai’s BaaS release says the myHyundai app can locate and use more than 28,000 EV charging points in India. Treat that count as a time-sensitive network claim: stations can be added, removed, occupied, out of service or subject to different payment rules. Before a long trip:

  1. Open the app and inspect the route, not just the destination.
  2. Check connector type, advertised power, operating hours, payment method and recent availability where shown.
  3. Choose a primary stop with a second station within practical reach.
  4. Start the detour while you still have enough energy to reach the backup.
  5. Carry the charging and payment apps, RFID cards or other methods required by the operator.

IONIQ 5 and high-power DC charging

Hyundai’s earlier IONIQ 5 buying guide described approximately 18-minute 10–80% charging on a 350 kW charger for the prior 72.6 kWh specification. The current model’s 84.0 kWh battery and 690 km range were announced in April 2026, but the cited current release does not establish a new 10–80% time. Confirm the charger limit and the current model’s charging curve before assuming every 350 kW site will deliver the earlier result.

CRETA Electric versus IONIQ 5: a practical comparison

Decision factor CRETA Electric IONIQ 5
Role Everyday electric SUV for Indian city and mixed use Premium long-range electric crossover
Battery 42 kWh or 51.4 kWh 84.0 kWh in the updated 2026 model
Published range 420 km and 510 km ARAI figures in Hyundai’s ownership release; up to 473 km in a separate Hyundai guide for the long-range version Up to 690 km ARAI-certified
AC home charging information 7.4 kW; about 6 hours or 7 hours 15 minutes for 10–100%, configuration dependent Use the current model’s brochure figures; the CRETA estimates do not apply
Published DC information About 39 minutes for 10–80% Prior 72.6 kWh guide: about 18 minutes for 10–80% on a 350 kW charger; current 84.0 kWh time not established in the cited release
Starting price shown by Hyundai India ₹18,02,200; BaaS announcement: ₹10.99 lakh starting vehicle price plus battery EMI ₹55,70,000
Best reason to buy Lower entry cost, manageable size and convenient overnight charging Large reserve, premium equipment and fewer long-trip charging stops
Main caution Verify which range figure and battery variant apply to your quotation High purchase price and the need to confirm current charging specifications

Is Hyundai BaaS worth it?

Hyundai’s July 2, 2026 BaaS announcement gives the CRETA Electric a starting vehicle price of ₹10.99 lakh and battery EMI starting at ₹3.9 per kilometre. This changes the purchase from a larger upfront battery-inclusive price to a lower vehicle price plus a distance-linked battery payment. It can help a buyer who is constrained by the initial loan amount, but the kilometre charge becomes a recurring ownership cost.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Calculate the distance-linked payment

Use your expected kilometres, not an optimistic estimate:

Annual battery payment = annual kilometres × ₹3.9

At 12,000 km per year, the starting-rate arithmetic is ₹46,800 per year. Over five years and 60,000 km, it is ₹234,000 before any changes to terms, taxes, financing, minimum-use rules or other charges. This is an illustration of the quoted starting rate, not Hyundai’s complete lifetime-cost example; the release does not provide one.

Compare BaaS with buying the battery outright

  1. Write down the battery-inclusive on-road price for the exact CRETA Electric trim.
  2. Obtain the BaaS vehicle price, battery EMI contract, tenure, kilometre definition, minimums, excess-kilometre rules and end-of-term conditions in writing.
  3. Estimate annual kilometres for commuting, holidays and likely job or home changes.
  4. Add battery payments to electricity, insurance, servicing, financing interest, tyres, taxes and expected installation costs.
  5. Compare the total over the period you expect to keep the car, including resale or transfer conditions.

BaaS is more attractive when reducing the initial loan is valuable and your kilometre usage is predictable. Outright ownership may be easier to budget when you drive high annual kilometres, intend to keep the car for many years or want to avoid a contract tied to distance. The ₹3.9/km figure is a starting rate, so the signed offer—not the headline—controls the decision.

A purchase process that avoids expensive surprises

Step 1: Prove that you can charge at home

Before paying a booking amount, obtain apartment permission if relevant, confirm sanctioned load and earthing, and get a wallbox installation plan. If home charging is impossible, identify a dependable workplace or public alternative and test its access, hours and payment process.

  • Premium Material: Crafted from premium EVA material, our car seat side gap filler boasts a combination of wear-resistant, softness&durability. Maintenance is effortless, simply rinse and wipe to quickly clean the dust and debris in corners and crevices

Step 2: Build a route-and-energy profile

List weekday kilometres, monthly highway trips, passengers, luggage and climate conditions. Mark primary and backup chargers on each regular intercity route. A route with one nominal charger is not the same as a route with reliable redundancy.

Step 3: Select the battery

Choose the 42 kWh CRETA Electric when the lower purchase cost and predictable overnight top-ups outweigh extra highway flexibility. Choose the 51.4 kWh version when its range reserve reduces regular stops. Move to the IONIQ 5 when the 84.0 kWh pack, premium cabin and long certified range solve a problem you actually have.

Step 4: Price the complete ownership model

Compare the exact on-road quotes, financing, wallbox and electrical work, insurance, electricity tariff, public charging, tyres and BaaS payments where applicable. Do not compare ₹10.99 lakh BaaS vehicle pricing directly with a battery-inclusive on-road quotation.

Step 5: Verify the delivered car

  • Match the battery size, trim and model year to the booking document.
  • Confirm the range certification and charging specifications printed in the current brochure.
  • Check that the wallbox, cables and installation scope are itemised.
  • For BaaS, read kilometre billing, transfer, termination, battery warranty and roadside-assistance clauses.
  • Ask the dealer to demonstrate the charging connector, scheduling controls and app pairing.

Ordering before apartment approval

Fix: Secure written permission and a load assessment first. A wallbox cannot be installed safely or legally wherever a car can park.

Comparing BaaS prices without adding kilometres

Fix: Multiply the quoted per-kilometre payment by realistic annual and ownership-period distance, then include financing and contract conditions.

Mixing model years and variants

Fix: Record the exact battery, trim, brochure date and certification number on your comparison sheet. The 72.6 kWh IONIQ 5 charging statement and the CRETA Electric’s 473 km guide figure are not current universal specifications.

Final decision checklist

  • Can you install and use a dedicated 7.4 kW wallbox, or do you have a dependable alternative?
  • What are your real weekday and highway kilometres?
  • Which chargers and backups exist on your regular routes?
  • Does the 42 kWh or 51.4 kWh CRETA Electric meet your reserve requirement?
  • Would the IONIQ 5’s 84.0 kWh battery and up to 690 km certified range materially reduce stops for you?
  • Have you compared BaaS and outright ownership over your expected holding period?
  • Did you verify current price, trim, range, charger time and contract terms in writing?

For most Indian households, the CRETA Electric is the right starting point because it balances price, SUV practicality and overnight charging. The IONIQ 5 is the rational upgrade when long-distance range, premium equipment and charging speed justify its substantially higher cost. Decide only after your parking power and regular routes pass the same scrutiny as the showroom specification.
