For most 4K setups that run at up to 60Hz, choose a certified Premium High Speed HDMI cable. If you need 4K at 120Hz, choose a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. Check the TV, source device, and every receiver or soundbar between them: a cable cannot add features those devices do not support.
Which HDMI cable do you need for a 4K TV?
Match the cable to the highest resolution, refresh rate, and features your connected equipment is meant to use. The official cable categories and their stated capabilities are:

How to choose based on refresh rate and features
For 4K at up to 60Hz
Look for a certified Premium High Speed HDMI cable if you want a 4K60 setup with HDR or expanded color. Its category is specified for up to 18Gbps and includes those capabilities. Verify that the TV and source support the desired mode as well.

For 4K at 120Hz
Look for a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. This category supports up to 48Gbps and is designed for configurations including 4K120. The TV, source, and any receiver or soundbar in the path must also support the mode you intend to use.
For a standard 4K connection
Do not assume that the words “4K” alone identify the right cable. The refresh rate and features matter: the official guide lists High Speed HDMI as supporting 4K at 30Hz, while Premium High Speed is the certified category for 4K60 with HDR capabilities. Check your equipment specifications to determine which mode you need.

Check the whole signal path before buying
- Check the TV. Find the HDMI input specifications in the TV manual or manufacturer’s product information. Confirm the resolution, refresh rate, and features supported by the input you plan to use.
- Check the source. Look up the output capabilities of the console, PC, streaming device, or other source. The source and TV must both support the mode you want.
- Include intermediate equipment. If the signal passes through a receiver or soundbar, check its HDMI capabilities too. A cable category does not override a limitation in any device along the route.
- Choose the matching cable category. Use Premium High Speed for a compatible 4K60/HDR setup or Ultra High Speed for a compatible 4K120 setup; select a higher tier only if the equipment requirements call for it.
How to verify a cable is certified
Use the official category name, not a vague marketing description, as your guide. HDMI Licensing Administrator warns that resellers may use non-official terms, and that counterfeit products exist.
- Check the package for the applicable official certification label and cable name or logo.
- Check that the cable jacket carries the official cable name.
- For an Ultra High Speed cable, scan its certification label to verify the model or brand information and certification result. Match the exact product and length you are buying.
The HDMI Forum says certified Ultra High Speed cables of any length must pass testing at an HDMI Forum Authorized Testing Center. Its certification program information describes the testing and scannable label. A listing that merely says “HDMI 2.1 cable” is not, by itself, proof of certification or a substitute for checking the official cable category.

Choose a length that suits the installation
Measure the route between devices and choose a cable that reaches without strain. The official category guidance does not establish one universal maximum length for passive cables or a single distance at which every setup needs an active or optical cable. For a long run or an in-wall installation, verify the specific model and length, check installation requirements, and make sure the seller’s return policy gives you a way to address compatibility problems.

Not automatically. HDMI Licensing Administrator describes Ultra96 as a newer HDMI 2.2 cable category supporting up to 96Gbps for higher-bandwidth applications. It also says Ultra96 is backward-compatible with existing HDMI devices, but that does not mean an existing 4K setup needs one. Choose it when the connected devices’ requirements call for that bandwidth tier. The HDMI Licensing Administrator’s press releases record the HDMI 2.2 announcement dated June 25, 2025.
