How to choose your Birkenstock size
Birkenstock footwear is sized in European sizes. Its US fit guide provides a US-to-EU conversion chart, but shoe-size conversions are approximate: for example, the chart maps women’s US 8–8½ and men’s US 11–11½ to EU 39. Use that as a starting point rather than assuming the same size will fit every foot or style.
For a more specific starting point, measure the length and width of both feet and compare them with the appropriate adult or children’s rows in Birkenstock’s Fit Guide Size Chart. The chart lists measurements in millimeters for each size and for Regular and Narrow widths. Birkenstock’s fit guide calculator accepts separate measurements for the left and right foot and returns a recommendation. The calculator advises choosing the next size up if you are unsure, noting that feet expand slightly during the day; its recommended size or width may not be available in every style.
How to measure your feet
Use the printable template
Birkenstock’s official printable measurement template shows how to align the heel and inside of the foot with its guide lines, read the length on the millimeter scale, and trace the foot’s outline. Print the template at 100% scale, then check its millimeter scale against a ruler; printing at the wrong size can distort the result. The template indicates Narrow when the outline falls within its marked curve and Regular when it falls outside it.

If you use the calculator, enter each foot’s length and width rather than measuring only one side. Feet can differ, so checking both helps you avoid basing the choice on the smaller foot. Compare the result with the chart and check whether the exact style is offered in that size and width.
How to choose Regular or Narrow width
Birkenstock’s US guidance is: “Choose Regular for medium to wide feet or Narrow for narrow to medium.” The brand also says Narrow fits most women’s feet; treat this as broad guidance, not a substitute for measuring or trying the footwear. The chart’s width measurements and the fit on your own foot are more useful for resolving uncertainty.

Check the width symbol on the product page or box: an outlined footprint indicates Regular, while a filled footprint indicates Narrow. How to check the fit in the specific style
Once you have a likely size and width, check the footwear on your feet rather than relying on the chart alone. Birkenstock’s US Fit Guide recommends flexing the footbed before trying on sandals by placing one hand under the toe and one under the heel. Open all straps, step into the sandals, and fasten them comfortably. Your toes should not touch the edge of the footbed; the guide recommends about ¼ inch of space around the foot.

For break-in, Birkenstock recommends starting with loose straps and wearing the footwear around the house for 1–2 hours at a time. Gradually increase wear time as your feet adjust, then tighten the straps as the footbed begins to mold to your feet. Persistent discomfort is not a reason to ignore a poor fit; reassess the size, width, and style.
