There is no universal “perfect” WordPress palette. The right scheme is one that expresses your brand, gives every color a clear job, remains readable against its background, and works across your real pages, images, links, and buttons. On a block theme, configure it from Appearance > Editor > Styles > Colors, then test the combinations before publishing.
1. Start with purpose and brand
Decide what the site should communicate to its intended audience and identify colors that already belong to your logo, product, signage, or other brand materials. Treat associations such as “blue feels trustworthy” as design hypotheses, not universal facts. Test the result with real content and accessibility checks.
WordPress documentation does not define a required number of colors or a universally successful palette. A role-based system is a practical way to make decisions without turning a collection of favorite swatches into an inconsistent interface.
2. Assign each color a stable role
Choose colors by function, then reuse those functions throughout templates and blocks. At minimum, define the following roles:

| Role | Where it appears | Decision to make |
|---|---|---|
| Page background | Site canvas, sections, and cards | Can long-form text sit on it comfortably? |
| Primary text | Paragraphs, lists, captions, and metadata | Does it meet the applicable text-contrast requirement? |
| Link or accent | Text links, highlights, and selected states | Can visitors identify links without relying on color alone? |
| Action/button | Calls to action, forms, and primary controls | Is the label readable in every button state? |
| Heading | Headings and navigation hierarchy | Does it improve hierarchy without becoming too faint? |
Set headings separately only when the distinction improves hierarchy and remains legible. Keep the same roles consistent across posts, pages, navigation, forms, and reusable patterns.
For block-theme controls and palette behavior, see the WordPress Styles overview.
3. Confirm that your theme supports the workflow
Global Styles is a block-theme feature available in WordPress 5.9 and later. The active theme determines which palettes, style variations, blocks, and color controls you see. A classic theme may require its own Customizer controls or theme-specific settings instead of the Site Editor workflow.

4. Preview variations before editing individual colors
In the Site Editor, browse the available style variations first. WordPress describes variations as alternate combinations of colors, typography, spacing, block settings, and other styling. You can preview and switch among them without changing themes, then refine the one that best fits your brand and content.
After selecting a direction, edit the palette or add named custom values. WordPress supports HEX, RGB, and HSL entry. Name colors by role—such as “Primary text” or “Action”—rather than by an arbitrary swatch name so future edits remain understandable.

5. Check contrast with the actual combinations
Contrast is a requirement, not a decorative preference. WordPress’s Theme Handbook gives a minimum 4.5:1 contrast ratio for plain content text at WCAG AA. The relevant WCAG 2.2 explanation is Success Criterion 1.4.3: Contrast (Minimum).
Check each foreground/background pair as it really appears, including headings, muted text, cards, overlays, buttons, hover states, and focus states. For an inline text link without decoration, WordPress guidance adds a 3:1 contrast requirement against surrounding non-link text, in addition to the other applicable contrast requirements.
Do not communicate meaning by color alone. A link should have another identifying treatment, such as an underline; an error should include explanatory text or an icon with an accessible name, not only a red border. The WordPress Theme Handbook accessibility guidance covers contrast, links, and use of color.

The block editor can warn when a text and background choice may be hard to read. WordPress describes this as an editor accessibility test—not a complete accessibility audit. The warning is documented in the Colors Settings overview.
6. Apply global colors, then find local overrides
Set your site-wide background, text, links, headings, and buttons in Styles > Colors. Then inspect representative blocks and templates for local settings. WordPress can expose per-block text, background, gradient, and nested-element colors, and those controls vary by theme and block.
A block with its own color override may not change when you edit the global palette. Review at least a home page, a long article, a page with a form, navigation, cards or columns, and any custom patterns. Check both desktop and mobile layouts, especially where text overlays an image.

7. Test the palette against real content
- Brand fit: recognizable brand colors support the intended tone without forcing every element to use the logo color.
- Readability: text, links, controls, and their states remain identifiable and meet the applicable contrast requirement.
- Consistency: the same role keeps the same meaning across templates and blocks.
- Theme compatibility: the active theme exposes the global controls and variations you need.
- Content fit: the scheme still works with product photography, illustrations, video thumbnails, tables, code, and long paragraphs.
Use real pages rather than a color-only mockup. A palette that looks balanced in the Styles panel can fail when a headline sits over a bright image or when a secondary label is reduced to small text.
8. Save carefully and keep changes reversible
Save only after reviewing the affected templates and blocks. The Site Editor documents style revisions and reset options, while the Styles palette includes ways to return to the theme’s original variation colors. Because labels and save prompts can vary by WordPress and theme version, read the confirmation shown in your editor before accepting a broad change.
Keeping a short record of each role’s value also makes it easier to restore a known-good palette after experimentation.
Quick Recap
A practical decision checklist

- Confirm that the theme and WordPress version expose the required global controls.
- Preview style variations before customizing individual swatches.
- Enter named HEX, RGB, or HSL values in the global palette.
- Verify text, links, buttons, focus states, and image overlays against their real backgrounds.
- Ensure no control, status, or error is identified by color alone.
- Inspect local block overrides and representative page types.
- Save after review and use revisions or reset controls if an experiment causes problems.
