Choose a wallpaper that works with your Lock Screen
Think of the image and the information on top of it as one layout. Apple lets you change the clock’s appearance, add widgets, customize controls, and apply styles, so consider what you want to see before settling on a background. Apple’s Lock Screen guide notes that available features can vary by iPhone model.
- Keep the time easy to read. Preview the clock over the image. A busy or high-contrast area behind it may make the time harder to pick out.
- Leave room for widgets and notifications. If you use widgets, choose a composition that does not crowd their area. Check how notifications look against the image, too.
- Choose the overall feel you want. A personal photo can make the screen meaningful; a built-in design or simpler image can keep attention on the clock and information.
These are practical composition tips, not an Apple-defined legibility standard. The most reliable test is to preview your own image with your chosen clock and widgets visible.
Choose between a photo, a built-in design, and Photo Shuffle

Apple documents these choices and settings in its wallpaper setup instructions. For a consistent look, use one image; for variety, select images that all work with the same clock and widget layout.
Check the crop before you save
A photo does not have to be designed as a phone wallpaper in advance. In Lock Screen customization, you can pinch to zoom and drag to reposition it. Use that preview to check whether the subject remains visible and the clock and widgets have enough room. A face, landmark, or other important detail near an edge may be cut off or end up under screen content.
Apple also documents a Depth Effect for supported images and offers photo styles or filters. These are optional: try them in the preview, then keep the version that leaves the information on your Lock Screen clear. The exact options depend on the selected image and device. Decide whether you want motion or a 3D effect
Apple says certain photos can be used as 3D spatial wallpapers on iPhone 12 or later with iOS 26. Not every photo qualifies. Apple lists traits commonly found in eligible images—high-quality lighting, clear separation between subject and background, or landscape orientation—but those traits do not guarantee eligibility. Preview the effect before choosing it; a still wallpaper is also a good choice if you prefer no added motion.

Set the wallpaper and customize the screen
- Open Settings > Wallpaper > Add New Wallpaper, or touch and hold the Lock Screen and tap the add control or choose an existing screen to customize.
- Choose Photos, Photo Shuffle, or a built-in category such as Weather & Astronomy, Emoji, or Color. For Photo Shuffle, select the images or categories and choose On Tap, On Lock, Hourly, or Daily.
- Adjust the photo’s position and zoom. Then review the clock, widgets, controls, and any available style or effect with the image in place.
- Set the wallpaper pair, or customize the Home Screen separately if you want it to look different from the Lock Screen.
Apple also supports creating multiple Lock Screens and linking one to a Focus. That lets you switch between layouts—for example, a minimal screen and one with more widgets—without relying on a single setup for every context. A quick final check
- Can you read the time at a glance?
- Are the subject and important details positioned where you want them?
- Do widgets and notifications remain distinct from the background?
- Does the wallpaper look right with your chosen style, controls, and Home Screen pairing?
- If you enabled shuffle or an effect, does its behavior suit how you use the phone?
