Choose smart home devices by checking the exact model’s Apple Home compatibility, the functions you need in the Home app, and its Wi-Fi, Thread, hub, and setup requirements. Matter can make an accessory usable across supported platforms, but the Matter label alone does not tell you which network it uses or whether it needs additional hardware.
1. Start with the task you want the device to do
Decide what you want to automate before comparing products: lighting, a plug-in appliance, entry, climate, sensing, or cleaning. Apple’s Works with Apple Home guidance lists supported Matter categories including air purifiers, blinds and shades, bridges, fans, lights, locks, outlets, robot vacuum cleaners, switches, thermostats, and several kinds of sensors.
Choose a product that matches both the category and the specific job. For example, a smart outlet may turn a compatible plug-in appliance on and off, but it is not a substitute for a device designed to regulate temperature or control a motorized shade. Check the manufacturer’s documentation for suitability and any limits relevant to your appliance or installation.
2. Verify the exact model and the Apple Home functions it supports
Look for explicit Apple Home, HomeKit, or Matter compatibility on the product’s packaging and official product page. Then confirm that the exact model exposes the functions you need in Apple Home. A device that can be controlled in a manufacturer’s app does not automatically provide every feature through the Home app.

Apple’s accessory setup and troubleshooting guidance advises checking the manual for additional hardware, software updates, or setup through the manufacturer’s app. Product families can include models with different connectivity or capabilities, so do not rely on a listing for a similar-looking product.
3. Know what Matter does—and what it doesn’t tell you
Matter is a smart home connectivity standard intended to let compatible accessories work across supported platforms. Apple says Matter support is included in iOS 16.1 and later, and Matter accessories can be added to Apple Home through the Home app or a HomeKit-based app. Pairings can also be managed across supported ecosystem apps with user permission, which may help if your household uses more than one platform. Matter does not, by itself, specify whether a particular accessory connects over Wi-Fi or Thread, which features Apple Home supports for that model, or whether your setup needs a hub, bridge, or Thread border router. Check those details in the product’s current documentation before buying.
4. Check Wi-Fi, Thread, and hub requirements
Wi-Fi accessories
Confirm the manufacturer’s Wi-Fi requirements, including supported network bands. Apple notes that some accessories are incompatible with 5 GHz Wi-Fi. Also check whether the instructions require the accessory, your existing accessories, and your home hubs to be on the same Wi-Fi network during setup.

Thread accessories
Thread is a low-power, IP-based mesh technology, not another name for Matter. In Apple’s description, Thread-enabled accessories can forward packets to one another, which can improve coverage and add redundancy. A Thread accessory therefore needs compatible Thread infrastructure; Apple’s setup guidance identifies Thread-capable Apple home hubs and compatible third-party Thread border routers. Check the exact device’s requirements and your existing equipment. Apple explains Thread in its home accessories development guidance.
When a home hub is needed
A hub is not mandatory for every Matter setup. Apple says an iPhone running iOS 18 or later can add and control Matter accessories in the Home app without a home hub, while recommending a hub for the best experience. Requirements can still vary with the accessory, network technology, software, and intended setup. Check Apple’s current Matter troubleshooting guidance and the manufacturer’s instructions for the specific model.

5. Account for setup and maintenance
Before checkout, check what you will need to install and keep the device working. Apple’s setup guidance says an iPhone or iPad is needed to add accessories and Bluetooth should be on. Pairing may involve scanning a QR code or entering an Apple Home or Matter setup code; a manufacturer app or firmware update may also be required.
- Check whether the product needs a bridge, Thread border router, or other hardware.
- Confirm that your phone or tablet, Wi-Fi configuration, and any required hub meet the setup instructions.
- Find out whether initial setup or firmware updates require the manufacturer’s app.
- Keep the setup code and follow the manufacturer’s directions if pairing fails.
6. Compare products on the details that affect your home
Once you have a shortlist, compare models using the same practical questions rather than relying on a compatibility badge alone:
