For OCI applications that need shared file-system access over NFS, start by evaluating OCI File Storage. Choose its placement and mount-target performance tier based on the application’s NFS requirements, measured workload, network design, and recovery needs—not on a published throughput maximum alone.
Is OCI File Storage the right access model?
OCI File Storage is a managed NFS service. A mount target is the network endpoint that clients connect to; an export makes a particular file system available through that endpoint. An instance needs an export through a mount target to mount the file system. One mount target can serve multiple file systems when each has its own export. See Oracle’s File Storage overview and file-system creation guide.
First confirm that the application needs shared file-system semantics and supports NFS. If it does not, or if it requires a different storage interface, File Storage may not be the right design. Verify the application’s operating-system and NFS-client support instead of assuming compatibility.
Where should you place the file system and compute?
Oracle says file-system data resides entirely within its availability domain (AD), with synchronous replication and high-availability failover within that AD. Oracle recommends placing File Storage resources in the same AD as the compute instances that access them for optimal performance, though mount targets can be accessed from other ADs in a region. Use the application’s latency and resilience requirements to choose placement; co-location is the recommended starting point, not a substitute for testing. Oracle’s overview also explains that a file system cannot simply be moved to another AD or region: data transfer requires a snapshot and a separate copy operation, such as with rsync.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What network and access prerequisites should you check?
- Subnet capacity: Each mount target requires three IP addresses. Oracle recommends a subnet dedicated to mount targets so other resources do not consume addresses they may need. Check the current mount-target guidance.
- Connectivity: Validate routing and network security rules for the NFS traffic required by your clients, and test client connectivity to the mount target.
- Permissions: Ensure the appropriate IAM access is in place to create and manage the file system, mount target, and exports.
- Client compatibility: Confirm the application’s operating system and NFS client support the service and the intended mount configuration.
These are storage-design requirements, not just deployment details: a mount target that cannot be reached or managed correctly will prevent the application from using the file system.
Which mount-target performance tier fits the workload?
Oracle documents Standard and High Performance mount-target tiers. The figures below are Oracle service-documentation maximum read-throughput values, not independent benchmark results or application guarantees. High Performance maxima apply under specified conditions, including read block sizes of at least 1 MiB and sufficient concurrency and queue depth. | Tier | Documented maximum read throughput | Capacity entitlement | Billing commitment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | Up to 1 Gbps | No storage capacity entitlement stated for this tier (Oracle, Managing Mount Targets) | Not stated on the cited mount-target page |
| High Performance | Up to 20 Gbps | 20,000 GB | 30-day commitment; billed in 30-day cycles |
| High Performance | Up to 40 Gbps | 40,000 GB | 30-day commitment; billed in 30-day cycles |
| High Performance | Up to 80 Gbps | 80,000 GB | 30-day commitment; billed in 30-day cycles |
The throughput tier is selected at the mount-target level. High Performance therefore carries a time-based cost commitment as well as its documented capacity entitlement. Check Oracle’s current pricing and service limits for your region and configuration before choosing it; the cited documentation does not establish your application’s total cost.
How should you validate performance?
Benchmark with application-shaped I/O before settling on a tier or mount configuration. Oracle identifies compute bandwidth, latency, placement, and mount options as factors that can constrain performance. A published read maximum does not describe every workload, especially one with a different read/write mix, smaller I/O, metadata activity, or limited concurrency. Oracle’s performance troubleshooting guidance and File Storage performance guide provide tuning context; treat the latter’s guidance as a starting point for testing rather than a universal configuration.

Measure the workload characteristics that matter to the application:
- Read and write throughput, I/O size, and the mix of sequential and other access patterns.
- Concurrency and queue depth at realistic application load.
- Latency sensitivity and metadata operations, not only bulk data transfer.
- Compute bandwidth and the distance between clients and mount target.
- Results with the application’s actual client, mount options, and file sizes.
Oracle says negotiated rsize and wsize values are generally preferable unless the application requires explicit values. Avoid changing them simply to chase a published maximum; compare settings under representative load and keep a known-good configuration.

How should you plan availability, backup, and data movement?
Within an AD, Oracle documents synchronous replication and high-availability failover. That description does not by itself specify whether your backup retention, regional disaster recovery, or recovery-time objectives are met. Define those requirements for the application, then plan snapshots and separate data copies where needed. Test the recovery procedure against the required recovery point and recovery time; do not treat within-AD service availability as a complete backup or regional-recovery plan.
Because the file system cannot simply be moved between ADs or regions, cross-boundary data movement requires a separate copy workflow. Oracle’s overview describes using a snapshot and a copy tool such as rsync; validate the method and recovery process for your own data and operating requirements.
