Samsung announced the Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra and S12+ on September 30, 2026, with availability starting October 7 in select markets; the U.S. date is also October 7. At launch, Samsung’s named options cover image editing, illustration, video, notes, study, planning, and field drawings. They are vendor-described roles, not independent app-performance rankings. Before committing a work-critical workflow, verify regional availability, file handoff, Android and DeX behavior, and whether you still need desktop software. Samsung’s global announcement and its U.S. product FAQ provide launch and offer details.
Start with the job, not the app list
First identify the output you need: a retouched image, an illustration, an edited video, searchable or handwritten notes, organized project material, or a field sketch that becomes a CAD drawing. Then check the required file formats, export path, collaboration needs, and any desktop-only tools in your existing process. A tablet app is suitable only if it can complete the handoffs your work depends on.
Samsung’s launch announcement names the following apps for these roles. The descriptions below reflect Samsung’s positioning; the announcement does not provide independent comparative tests or establish which app is best for a particular professional.

Compare apps against your real workflow
For note-taking, compare the qualities that affect daily work rather than relying on a feature label:

- How handwriting and S Pen input feel for your writing style.
- Whether notebooks, pages, tags, and search match the way you retrieve information.
- Whether study tools or handwriting-to-text features support your subject and notation.
- Whether you can export and hand off notes in the formats your team or other software accepts.
- What the subscription costs after a trial or promotional period, and whether the app is available locally.
For creative work, distinguish image editing from illustration and video editing: they produce different outputs and may require different file formats or desktop features. Confirm the exact features and export path you need rather than assuming that a tablet edition matches a desktop edition.
For a DeX setup, test the actual app versions and peripherals you plan to use. Check window arrangement, keyboard and trackpad behavior, and any external-monitor requirement. Samsung describes DeX as a PC-like multitasking workspace, but the cited launch sources do not supply independent app-by-app workflow tests.

Check compatibility before building a critical workflow
Clip Studio Paint illustrates why a promotional mention is not the same as confirmed model compatibility. Its official Galaxy compatibility page consulted for this article did not list Tab S12. Its support material also records DeX-related caveats in particular software and device conditions, including a past One UI 8 issue involving display of a canvas on an external monitor. That example is not evidence that the same problem affects every app or the current Tab S12; check the current compatibility information and test the exact setup you depend on.
Apply the same discipline to any work-critical app: verify the device, operating-system version, app edition, file exchange, and accessories together. If a task depends on a feature that cannot be tested before a deadline, keep a working alternative until the tablet workflow has been proven in your conditions.

Account for the included pen, separate accessories, and laptop limits
Samsung says both Tab S12 models include an S Pen. A charger is not included, according to the U.S. product FAQ. Samsung lists the Pro Keyboard, Book Cover Keyboard Slim, and Book Cover as compatible accessories; the Frame Cover is listed for the Ultra only. Compatible accessories are sold separately.
The Pro Keyboard is the more relevant option if you type for extended periods or want a trackpad for a DeX workflow. Samsung lists an aluminum body, 1.0 mm key travel, a trackpad, and a Galaxy AI Key. Choose an accessory only after confirming it is the exact compatible variant for your model; the included S Pen means a replacement pen is not an essential purchase for getting started.

Whether the tablet can replace a laptop depends on the software you must run, not on DeX’s desktop-like layout alone. Samsung’s U.S. FAQ says specialized software may still require a laptop. If one desktop application is essential to your work, confirm it has a usable tablet alternative or retain access to the laptop before moving the workflow.

Samsung’s September 30, 2026 global announcement says Tab S12 availability begins October 7 in select markets. It also says Photoshop for Tablet is to be exclusive to the Galaxy Store for at least six months from October 7, after which Adobe may distribute it elsewhere. Samsung’s footnotes warn that app availability, offer value, and terms can vary by country, region, market, and currency.

The U.S. offer package is distinct from the global announcement: Samsung’s U.S. page describes four months of Photoshop, six months of Notability Plus, six months of Clip Studio Paint EX, one month of Notion Business, and one year of Goodnotes Essential. Do not treat those U.S. terms as universal or assume trial access continues without charge. Check the local Galaxy Store redemption screen for eligibility, duration, and the continuation price before relying on an offer.
