For practicing phoneme discrimination—hearing which sound a word contains—start with a tool that makes you choose what you heard before showing the spelling. MinimalPairs is the clearest documented direct fit: it offers an A–B–X listening task, but you need to confirm it covers your language and exact sound contrast. For a more structured route, consider the Fluent Forever app; for an uncovered contrast, build audio-first cards in Anki using recordings you have checked. These are feature-fit recommendations, not a scientifically established ranking: a speech-pronunciation score tests a different skill from identifying a sound by listening.

At a glance

Name Best for Key spec Fit caveat Checked
MinimalPairs Direct listening discrimination practice A–B–X task; spelling is hidden until after the choice; feedback follows Confirm the exact contrast and dialect are included; first session is free, not necessarily every lesson Nov 2026
Fluent Forever app A structured route with pronunciation lessons and ear training App advertises pronunciation lessons and ear training; feature availability varies across supported languages Check whether the learner’s language, contrast, and desired exercise are available in the current course Nov 2026
Anki with checked recordings A custom contrast not covered by a ready-made drill Audio cards with review scheduling; recordings can be sourced through Forvo You must select valid pairs, confirm dialect and recording quality, and check permissions Nov 2026

The table is ordered by how directly each option documents the task, not by measured learning outcomes. No reliable head-to-head evidence establishes one commercial app as the most effective choice for every learner.

What should a phoneme-discrimination app actually do?

It should play speech and ask you to identify a sound or choose which example matches it, with the answer withheld until you decide. A tool that asks you to repeat a word and scores your pronunciation may be useful, but it is not automatically an ear-training tool.

Phonemes are sound categories that can distinguish words in a language. A learner can know a word’s spelling and meaning yet still confuse a sound in speech, especially when the distinction does not function the same way in the learner’s first language. The practical goal is not merely to memorize two written symbols. It is to hear the contrast in unfamiliar examples and, eventually, in ordinary speech.

That makes the exercise design important. In a listening task, the learner makes a perceptual decision: for example, “Did I hear sound A or sound B?” In a production task, the learner speaks and receives feedback about how the utterance sounded to a recognition system or reviewer. A 2026 study of an AI pronunciation app measured discrimination and production outcomes, but the training itself targeted production and did not include vowel-discrimination exercises. A production score therefore cannot stand in for evidence that an app trains listening discrimination. (Mora-Plaza et al., 2026; Georgiou, 2026)

What to check before you commit

  • The task: Does the app ask you to identify a sound from audio, or only to say something aloud, hear a lesson, or read a pronunciation tip?
  • The exact contrast: Does it include the two sounds that you confuse, in the language and dialect you are learning? A large language count does not tell you whether your specific contrast is covered.
  • Answer timing: Can you make a choice before seeing the word or answer? Seeing the spelling first can turn a listening exercise into a reading prompt.
  • Feedback: Does it reveal the correct answer after your decision so you can connect what you heard with the intended sound?
  • Transfer: Can you later check the same distinction in different words, voices, and sentences? Success on one isolated pair is not by itself proof that you will hear the contrast in conversation.

Which tools are the best fit for focused listening practice?

For a ready-made sound-identification exercise, MinimalPairs is the most directly documented option here. Fluent Forever is a structured alternative, while a custom Anki deck is the flexible fallback when a ready-made tool does not cover the contrast you need.

1. MinimalPairs: best documented direct browser fit

MinimalPairs describes an A–B–X exercise: you hear two contrasting examples, then decide which sound a different word spoken by a different voice shares. The site says spelling is hidden until after you answer and that feedback follows. That order is useful for a learner who wants to make an auditory choice instead of inferring the answer from the written word.

The site lists French, Spanish, German, Italian, Russian, Mandarin, Portuguese, English, and Japanese, as well as a British English option. The number and identity of the available contrasts differ by language. A language appearing on the list does not guarantee that the exercise includes the particular pair you need, or that its recordings represent the dialect you want to understand. Look for the actual contrast before treating the tool as a match.

The site says the first session is free; that does not establish that all lessons are free. Current access and any limits should be checked on the site. This is a recommendation based on the described exercise design, not independent evidence that it outperforms the other options.

2. Fluent Forever app: best structured ready-made route

Fluent Forever’s app advertises pronunciation lessons and ear training. Its creator, Gabriel Wyner, also explains listening tests built from minimal pairs in a method chapter. That makes it a plausible route if you prefer a guided learning environment instead of assembling individual exercises yourself. (Wyner’s explanation of minimal-pair listening tests)

Do not assume that every exercise or Premium feature is available for every language. Fluent Forever says Premium feature availability applies in most supported languages, which is not a guarantee for a particular course. Before choosing it for a difficult sound, check the current course for the target language, the actual contrast, and the listening task you want to use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Wyner’s book and app are separate resources. The revised paperback edition of Fluent Forever, ISBN 9780593797495, is a 416-page physical guide published December 31, 2024, according to its publisher. The book explains a method; its printed pages do not themselves provide built-in audio tests. If you use the book, you will still need appropriate audio resources or an app to run listening exercises.

Older standalone Fluent Forever Anki pronunciation trainers are also distinct from the current app. Fluent Forever states that official support for those downloads ended September 12, 2019, and that materials for supported languages were built into its app. Do not assume that an old trainer download has the same support or course access as the current product. (Fluent Forever’s explanation of its pronunciation resources)

3. Anki plus suitable recordings: best configurable fallback

If a ready-made tool misses your language or sound, you can make a deck around the contrast. Anki documents audio support and spaced review scheduling; Forvo provides a searchable library of pronunciation recordings. Forvo is a source of recordings, not a documented ready-made minimal-pair quiz, so you have to build the listening task yourself. Wyner also describes an audio-card workflow for learning with sounds before relying on written prompts. (Anki; Wyner’s method)

A custom deck is only as useful as its examples. Confirm that the words really differ by the sound you are learning in the target dialect, that the recordings are clear enough to judge, and that the speakers’ accents are suitable for your goal. Check permissions before downloading or reusing recordings. If those checks are difficult, a ready-made course whose contrast and audio are already suitable may require less setup.

How do you choose and practice the right contrast?

Start with a specific listening problem, then keep the written answer out of view until you have made a choice. A small, well-defined exercise is more informative than practicing a generic set of “difficult sounds” that may not match your needs.

  1. Name the contrast and dialect. Write down the two sounds you confuse and the target language variety you want to understand. If you do not know the sound symbols, use an example word for each and ask a teacher or reliable language resource to confirm that the words differ in the intended way.
  2. Find a real contrast in the target language. A pair that differs in spelling is not necessarily a useful listening pair; the sounds must distinguish the words in the variety you are learning. Check that an exercise is not training a contrast that is absent, merged, or pronounced differently in that dialect.
  3. Take an audio-only baseline. Listen before looking at the word, then record your choice and how certain you felt. The aim is to find out what you hear, not to judge yourself. If the answer is visible first, you cannot tell whether the choice came from listening or reading.
  4. Use a task that makes you decide. Work through the direct contrast in MinimalPairs if it covers your pair, or use the relevant Fluent Forever course feature if available. With a custom deck, make the audio the prompt and reveal the answer only after you respond.
  5. Use feedback to diagnose the confusion. When you miss an item, note which sound you thought you heard and whether the mistake repeats across words. This helps distinguish an unfamiliar word from a recurring sound-category confusion; it does not require inventing a pronunciation score.
  6. Vary the examples after the basic contrast is clear. Try different words and, where the material permits, different voices. Variation can help you check whether you are recognizing the sound rather than memorizing one recording. It is not established that more talker variability always produces better learning: a 2022 replication involving 166 participants found ambiguous evidence that high talker variability outperforms low variability for non-native contrast learning. (Brekelmans et al., 2022)
  7. Check the contrast in connected speech. Once you can make the choice in isolated examples, listen for the sounds in sentences or other natural speech. A learner may still find everyday speech difficult after practicing minimal pairs; a learner’s account of that experience is useful context, not a measured result. (Language-learning discussion)
  8. Add speaking feedback only if production is also a goal. If you can hear the distinction but struggle to say it, a pronunciation coach may help with that separate problem. Keep listening identification and speaking feedback as different checks rather than treating one as proof of the other.

Which pronunciation apps help, and what do they not establish?

Several speech tools may help with producing sounds, but the product descriptions cited here do not establish them as audio-only phoneme-identification tests. Use them as supplements when speaking is part of your goal, not as substitutes for a listening choice.

  • ELSA Speak advertises instant feedback on individual spoken sounds in English. Its cited product description concerns spoken English feedback, not an audio-only task in which the learner identifies a sound before seeing the answer. (ELSA Speak product page)
  • BoldVoice describes instant English sound-level speaking feedback. That can be relevant to producing English sounds, but the cited description does not establish a targeted listening-discrimination exercise. (BoldVoice)
  • Rosetta Stone TruAccent evaluates speech in lessons. A speech-evaluation feature is not evidence that a learner is practicing a specific minimal-pair contrast through audio-only choices. (Rosetta Stone)
  • Pimsleur describes audio lessons and voice recognition in select languages. The cited material does not document a focused contrast-identification drill, so do not select it for that narrow task based on voice recognition alone. (Pimsleur)

Speechling offers listening to recorded sentences, recording your own speech, and human feedback on pronunciation, rhythm, and intonation. That can bridge isolated sound work and connected speech, especially if you want feedback on complete utterances. It is not the lead choice for an A–B sound-identification test. Its free curriculum and coaching allotments vary across languages, so check the current plan for yours. The service’s description of what it corrects is a provider description, not independent evidence of efficacy.

What does the evidence say about learning to hear new sounds?

Published studies support the possibility of improvement from targeted practice, but the available findings do not rank these consumer tools against one another. Results from a training design or a narrow participant group should not be generalized into a promise about a different language, contrast, or app.

A 2026 study of English-vowel training

Mora-Plaza and coauthors analyzed 80 learners in a four-session high-variability study of the English vowel contrast /æ/–/ʌ/. The training included discrimination, identification, and immediate repetition. The study reported improved discrimination, identification, and immediate repetition whether the training material used words or nonwords; learners trained with words generally had higher accuracy. This is evidence about that study’s training design, not a head-to-head app comparison or a guarantee of the same outcome for another sound pair. (Mora-Plaza et al., 2026)

A 2026 Speakometer intervention

Georgiou’s study involved 20 Cypriot Greek participants and four one-hour sessions using Speakometer. It reported modest improvements on English /iː/–/ɪ/ outcomes, but the intervention trained production only and did not include vowel-discrimination exercises. Participants did not reach native-speaker performance. The narrow sample and the specific intervention do not establish how another learner or speech-feedback system would perform. The paper also discusses conflicting earlier AI-pronunciation findings and cautions that automated feedback can vary by contrast and learner group. (Georgiou, 2026)

How much should you infer from speaker variation?

It is reasonable to use new voices as a check against memorizing one recording, but the evidence cited here does not support a rule that more voices are always better. Brekelmans and coauthors’ 2022 replication, involving 166 participants, found ambiguous evidence that high talker variability outperforms low talker variability for non-native contrast learning. That finding does not negate the reported gains in targeted practice; it limits a specific claim about which variability condition is superior. (Brekelmans et al., 2022)

Taken together, these findings support a practical distinction: targeted practice can help, but the exercise has to match the learning goal, and study outcomes are not interchangeable with proof that a particular product is best. No responsibly sourced statistic here ranks MinimalPairs, Fluent Forever, Anki, or the speech-feedback tools by improvement in phoneme discrimination.

How should you decide between a ready-made app and a custom deck?

Choose a ready-made tool when it covers your precise contrast and gives you an appropriate listening task; choose a custom deck when the necessary contrast is missing and you can verify the recordings. The trade-off is convenience versus control, not an established difference in learning effectiveness.

Decision Ready-made drill or course Custom Anki deck
When it fits The language, dialect, and contrast are actually available The target contrast is not covered, or you need selected examples
Setup Use the provider’s existing exercise; check the course and access details Find and verify contrasting words, audio, card prompts, and answer reveals
Control over examples Depends on the exercises offered You select the words and recordings, subject to quality and permissions
Main limitation A language listing does not guarantee the exact contrast or dialect Poor pair selection or inconsistent recordings can undermine the exercise

Neither route removes the need to test transfer into unfamiliar words and sentences. If the ready-made tool lets you make an audio-only choice and covers the target sound, its lower setup burden may be decisive. If not, a custom deck may address the gap, provided you can check that the sounds and recordings are suitable.

How we picked these tools

The list prioritizes documented fit to the reader’s task: hearing a sound and identifying it before the answer appears. It then considers whether a tool offers a structured path or can be adapted to a specific contrast. MinimalPairs is first because its described A–B–X format, hidden spelling, and feedback directly match the task. Fluent Forever follows as a structured option that advertises ear training and pronunciation lessons, with language-specific availability to verify. Anki with sourced recordings is the configurable alternative, not a ready-made quiz. The speech-focused tools are discussed separately because their cited descriptions center on production, sentence listening, or broader speech feedback.

This is a feature-fit ordering, not a result from hands-on testing or a claim that one product produces better learning. The studies cited above examine particular interventions and learners; they do not provide a comparable consumer-app leaderboard. Because language coverage, course features, access, and plans can change, confirm current details with the provider before choosing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I practice phoneme discrimination without a microphone?

Yes. The core listening task is to hear an audio example and make a choice; speaking into a microphone is not necessary for that task. A microphone-based tool becomes relevant if you also want feedback on how you produce the sound.

What if my language is listed but my difficult sound pair is not?

A language label alone does not confirm a specific contrast is available. You can look for a verified pair and suitable recordings for a custom audio-card exercise, or ask a teacher familiar with the target dialect to confirm the pair before practicing it.

How long does it take to hear a new sound reliably?

The evidence described here does not establish a universal timeline. Results depend on the contrast, learner, and practice design, so use progress on unfamiliar examples and connected speech—not a promised number of days—as the more meaningful check.

Should I learn IPA before using a minimal-pair tool?

IPA can help name and compare sounds precisely, but you can begin with example words if you know which distinction you are trying to hear. If you are uncertain whether the words contain the intended contrast in your target dialect, confirm that first rather than relying on spelling.
