The best balance is rarely an all-low preset. Set a clear resolution and frame-rate goal, record a repeatable baseline, then reduce shadows, ray-traced lighting and other expensive effects before cutting texture detail. Keep textures as high as your video memory can sustain without stutter, use anisotropic filtering at a sensible level, and try a supported upscaler in Quality mode before Balanced. For competitive shooters, start with frame generation disabled and judge frame-time consistency and input latency alongside average FPS.
These choices vary by game, patch, GPU, display and resolution. The workflow below gives you a repeatable way to find the clearest settings your system can deliver rather than promising one universal preset.
At a glance
| Name | Best for | Key spec | Platforms | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Native resolution | Maximum fine detail when performance is sufficient | Uses the display’s output resolution; highest rendering cost | PC shooters | Nov 2026 |
| Quality upscaling | Recovering FPS while retaining detail in motion | Renders below output resolution and reconstructs the image | Games with supported DLSS or FSR | Nov 2026 |
| Balanced upscaling | Systems that still miss the target in Quality mode | Lower internal resolution than Quality; greater detail risk | Games with supported DLSS or FSR | Nov 2026 |
| Reduced shadows and ray tracing | Large rendering-cost cuts with limited impact on texture sharpness | Compare Low/Medium levels and disable ray tracing first when necessary | Titles exposing these controls | Nov 2026 |
| Textures within VRAM | Preserving surface detail without streaming stutter | Set as high as available video memory can sustain; watch for pop-in | PC shooters | Nov 2026 |
| Higher anisotropic filtering | Clearer floors, roads and surfaces viewed at an angle | AMD describes a small FPS cost in most 3D applications | Driver or game dependent | Nov 2026 |
| Frame generation off | Competitive aiming and lowest added latency | Compare responsiveness, not only displayed FPS | Games with frame-generation options | Nov 2026 |
| VRR with a tested VSync choice | Reducing tearing when delivered FPS fluctuates | Requires a compatible variable-refresh display | PC with G-Sync or FreeSync-capable display | Nov 2026 |
How should I establish a baseline before changing settings?
Write down the current preset, output resolution, refresh rate, GPU and observed average and 1% low FPS. Reproduce the same map, replay, training range or built-in benchmark after each change; an unmatched firefight can hide whether a setting helped.
- Record the display target. Note the monitor’s native resolution and refresh rate, then decide whether you are prioritising visual detail, a particular refresh-rate class or the most consistent frame times.
- Capture a repeatable run. Use the game’s benchmark when one exists. A documented example is Modern Warfare 4’s in-game benchmark; its menu does not establish how another shooter behaves.
- Measure more than the headline number. NVIDIA FrameView documents average FPS and 1% lows. Its PC-latency metric depends on game and hardware support and may be unavailable. See the FrameView 1.7 user guide.
- Change one control or a related group. For example, reduce shadows and ray tracing together, then return to the same run. Keep a short note of image changes, average FPS, 1% low FPS and any latency reading.
- Keep the better frame-time result. A small average-FPS increase is not automatically an improvement if 1% lows become erratic or aiming feels less responsive.
Which settings usually deliver FPS without making targets harder to see?
Start with resolution strategy and expensive lighting, then tune textures, filtering and clarity effects separately. An all-low preset can remove useful detail while leaving a better compromise available.

Resolution and render scale
Resolution is one of the largest rendering-cost levers. Keep the intended output resolution explicit in your notes, then compare native rendering with the upscaler modes the game actually supports. Lowering internal resolution can soften small moving targets, so inspect distant silhouettes, head-level detail and thin cover while the camera is moving rather than judging a static screenshot.
Shadows, ray tracing and reflections
Reduce shadow quality before sacrificing texture resolution when shadows are a major cost in your title. If ray tracing or unusually expensive reflections are available, disable or lower them early; their visual benefit is often less important to target recognition than a stable frame time. Ambient occlusion is another candidate, but compare it in the game’s own scenes because implementations differ.
There is no reliable cross-game percentage gain for a single shadow setting. Treat each reduction as a measured trade-off in your repeatable run, not as a guaranteed FPS multiplier.

Texture quality controls surface detail and consumes video memory. Preserve a higher texture level while the GPU has headroom, then step down if you see streaming stutter, late texture replacement or pop-in. A level that is stable on one GPU is not a universal recommendation for another.
Anisotropic filtering
Anisotropic filtering affects the clarity of surfaces viewed obliquely, such as floors, roads and walls receding into the distance. AMD’s support documentation says it has “a small performance cost (FPS)” and can improve image quality in most 3D applications; see AMD’s anisotropic-filtering documentation. Compare a higher supported level rather than automatically forcing the minimum, especially when textures are otherwise sharp.

Should I use DLSS or FSR in a competitive shooter?
Use the upscaler that your GPU and game support, begin with Quality, and move to Balanced only when Quality still misses the target. Compare fine detail and motion clarity as well as FPS; no upscaler is indistinguishable from native rendering in every game.
| Option | What changes | When to try it | What to inspect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Native | The game renders at the output resolution | When the baseline is already fast enough | Small moving targets, foliage and distant geometry |
| Quality | Lower internal resolution reconstructed to the output | First upscaling step when FPS is short | Edges, shimmer, text and target outlines while turning |
| Balanced | Lower internal resolution than Quality | Only if Quality cannot meet the target | Additional softness, ghosting or loss of fine detail |
DLSS requires compatible RTX hardware. FSR versions and features have different hardware and game requirements. As of October 30, 2026, AMD describes FSR 4 as renamed FSR Upscaling within its Redstone naming, with support varying across Radeon generations and individual games; consult the current AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution information. NVIDIA likewise distinguishes DLSS super-resolution support from Multi Frame Generation overrides for RTX 50-series cards; do not treat every DLSS or FSR label as interchangeable.
Is frame generation worth enabling for a shooter?
For competitive play, begin with frame generation off. Inserted frames can make motion look smoother, but the displayed-FPS number does not prove that aiming input is more responsive; compare latency and control feel separately from the average.
Frame generation is a different operation from upscaling: upscaling reconstructs each rendered image from a lower internal resolution, while frame generation inserts additional displayed frames between rendered ones. If you enable it for a slower-paced or visual-focused mode, check for artifacts around fast-moving characters, particles and weapon animations, and keep the setting that best matches your latency priority. MSI author Jerry James wrote on July 30, 2026, “Since additional latency is not ideal in competitive titles, avoid enabling Frame Gen technologies in such games”; that is vendor guidance, not an independent measurement. The statement appears in MSI’s graphics-settings guide.
Which image-clarity settings should I disable?
Disable motion blur and depth of field if they obscure targets, but do not expect those switches to fix a GPU-bound scene. They change presentation more than rendering cost.

- Film grain and chromatic effects: If exposed, compare them for clarity, but prioritise shadows, ray tracing and resolution when FPS is the problem.
Low-latency features such as NVIDIA Reflex are a responsiveness decision, not an image-quality upgrade. Enable them only when the game and GPU support them, then assess latency in the same measurement pass.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow should I configure VRR and VSync?
A compatible variable-refresh-rate (VRR) display can reduce tearing when delivered FPS changes, but the best VSync choice depends on whether you prioritise the lowest possible latency or a tear-free presentation.
- Confirm that the monitor actually supports the relevant G-Sync or FreeSync mode and connect it through a compatible input.
- Enable the display’s VRR feature in the driver and operating system, then verify that the game recognises it.
- Compare the game’s VSync enabled and disabled behaviour in the same repeatable scene. Look for tearing, uneven frame delivery and any perceived input-delay change.
- Do not copy a universal frame-cap number. Choose a cap only after observing your display’s range and the game’s latency behaviour; the appropriate value varies by monitor, refresh rate and system.
VRR cannot create missing frames. If the GPU cannot hold a stable rate, return to resolution, upscaling and lighting controls before treating a monitor setting as the solution.
What setting order works for a competitive preset?
Use this order when visibility and responsiveness matter more than cinematic effects.
- Keep the monitor’s output resolution and refresh rate explicit.
- Turn motion blur and depth of field off if they interfere with target recognition.
- Leave frame generation off while establishing the competitive baseline.
- Reduce ray tracing, reflections, shadows and ambient occlusion in that order of visual cost for your game.
- Keep textures at the highest level that does not cause VRAM-related stutter or pop-in.
- Raise anisotropic filtering and inspect distant angled surfaces.
- If FPS is still short, test the upscaler’s Quality mode; use Balanced only after checking motion clarity.
- Compare VRR and VSync behaviour after the rendering settings are stable.
What setting order works for a high-image-quality preset?
Start at native resolution and preserve texture detail, then spend performance on lighting only when the frame-time result remains acceptable.

- Use native rendering if your baseline meets the intended experience.
- Keep textures high within the GPU’s available video memory and use anisotropic filtering at a higher supported level.
- Set shadows, reflections and ambient occlusion to the highest levels that do not produce distracting 1% lows.
- Add ray tracing only after conventional lighting is stable; compare its cost in the same scene.
- If the result is too slow, step down to Quality upscaling before Balanced.
- Leave frame generation as an optional visual-smoothness experiment, not as evidence of lower input latency.
Why does a game stutter when average FPS looks fine?
Average FPS hides short frame-time spikes. Check 1% lows and the cause of the spikes instead of raising the average with a setting that makes delivery less consistent.
- Texture streaming symptoms: Stutter accompanied by texture pop-in points toward excessive texture quality for available video memory. Lower textures one step and repeat the same route.
- Lighting spikes: Stutters around explosions, dynamic shadows or reflective scenes suggest expensive lighting. Compare lower shadow, reflection or ray-tracing levels.
- Upscaling artefacts: If motion becomes unstable or detail breaks up after enabling an upscaler, compare native and Quality in the same camera movement; Balanced may make the compromise more obvious.
- Frame-generation latency: A higher displayed FPS with less responsive input is a reason to disable frame generation for competitive play.
- Display delivery: Tearing or uneven presentation while the render rate varies may improve with a verified VRR configuration, but VRR does not repair an overloaded GPU.
What do published FPS figures actually tell me?
Published numbers are context-specific targets, not universal shooter requirements. Call of Duty’s Modern Warfare 4 specification lists 90 FPS at recommended specifications on High multiplayer settings and names Radeon RX 6600 XT, GeForce RTX 3060 Ti and Intel Arc B580 among recommended GPUs; it is a publisher specification, not an independently reproduced benchmark. Details are in the Modern Warfare 4 PC specifications.
AMD reports 3.5× average FPS in selected games when comparing native 4K on a Radeon RX 9070 XT with FSR Redstone Performance-mode upscaling plus frame generation. That is vendor testing that combines two technologies; it is not a competitive shooter’s native-rendered FPS or latency result. The conditions are described on AMD’s FSR page.
When should I consider hardware instead of more tuning?
Consider hardware only after the no-cost workflow identifies a persistent limit: native or Quality rendering is too slow, textures cause unavoidable VRAM streaming, or the display cannot show the frame-rate range you want. A high-refresh VRR monitor can make variable delivery look smoother, but it is not required to apply any graphics setting. Verify a prospective display’s resolution, refresh rate, inputs and VRR support rather than assuming compatibility.
If the GPU cannot meet the chosen resolution and lighting target even with frame generation off and sensible upscaling, a faster graphics card is the direct remedy. Treat vendor comparisons and game-specific specifications as context, not as a promise that a particular card or prebuilt system will produce the same result in every shooter.

How we picked these recommendations
The order prioritises controls that most directly affect rendering cost and target visibility: resolution strategy, shadows and ray tracing, texture-memory stability, anisotropic filtering, clarity effects, frame-generation latency and display synchronisation. Each recommendation is framed as a comparison to perform in the reader’s own game because feature names, implementations and performance vary by title, patch, GPU and display.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is 120 FPS automatically better than 60 FPS in every shooter?
Not necessarily. A higher average can still feel worse if frame times spike or input latency rises, so compare 1% lows and latency where the game or measurement tool supports them. The useful target is the most consistent rate your system can sustain at the clarity level you prefer.
Can I keep high textures on a card with limited VRAM?
Only if the same repeatable route remains free of streaming stutter and texture pop-in. If those symptoms appear, reduce texture quality before assuming that a sharper setting is always better.

Does an upscaler change the monitor’s output resolution?
Usually the display still receives the selected output resolution; the game renders internally at a lower resolution and reconstructs the image. The exact internal scales and available presets depend on the game’s implementation.
Why does a lower preset sometimes look less clear even when FPS rises?
An all-low preset can remove texture detail, filtering quality and useful lighting cues at the same time. Reducing expensive shadows or ray tracing while retaining textures and anisotropic filtering often preserves more of the information needed to read distant surfaces.
