For gerbera daisies, choose a complete fertilizer whose label includes iron and manganese; there is no established single best NPK ratio for home gardens. Controlled-release fertilizer means fewer applications, while liquid fertilizer requires more frequent feeding. Follow the product label, and investigate soil pH, drainage, and root health if leaves turn yellow rather than adding nutrients blindly.

What fertilizer should you choose?

For home-grown gerberas, prioritize complete nutrition and check the label for iron and manganese. Clemson Extension and the University of Florida IFAS both identify these micronutrients as relevant to gerbera care. The available home-garden guidance does not establish one ideal NPK ratio, so do not treat a particular number sequence as universally best.

Greenhouse production formulas are not automatically suitable for garden beds or household pots: their growing conditions and dosing differ. Choose a product labeled for your growing situation and use its directions.

Controlled-release or liquid fertilizer?

The practical difference is how often you apply fertilizer. Clemson Extension and UF/IFAS offer these source-specific home-garden schedules; local conditions and the product label still matter.

Form Guidance Practical fit
Controlled-release Clemson Extension and UF/IFAS describe two to three applications during the growing season. A good fit if you prefer fewer feeding sessions.
Liquid Clemson Extension describes feeding every two weeks. UF/IFAS also lists a complete fertilizer monthly. A good fit if you are comfortable applying fertilizer more often; follow the chosen product’s label.

Both forms should provide complete nutrition; look for iron and manganese on the label. Clemson Extension also mentions foliar sprays for micronutrients, but use them only as directed on the product label.

Why do gerbera leaves turn yellow?

Yellowing between the veins on upper leaves can be consistent with iron deficiency, but it is not enough by itself to confirm the cause. Nutrient availability depends on root-zone conditions, so check pH, moisture, drainage, and root health before adding iron or another supplement.

Check pH in context

UMass Extension gives a pH range of 5.8–6.2 for greenhouse gerbera substrate. In that greenhouse setting, pH above 6.2 can reduce iron availability and lead to interveinal yellowing on upper leaves. Below 5.8, excessive iron and manganese uptake can cause purplish lower leaves with black spots. These are greenhouse production figures, not universal targets for every home garden; use a pH test and advice appropriate to your growing medium.

Check drainage and roots

Gerberas need well-drained conditions. Soggy soil can cause root rot, which can complicate diagnosis and interfere with nutrient uptake. Check that the crown and roots are not sitting in persistently wet soil before assuming the plant needs more fertilizer. NC State Extension’s Gerbera jamesonii profile covers the plant’s growing needs.

What not to infer from greenhouse fertilizer formulas

Production-oriented formulas such as 15-5-15 Cal/Mag or 20-10-20 appear in a Wisconsin Master Gardener page that reproduces greenhouse-oriented advice. Those formulations and rates are not translated into home-use directions here; do not use them as a default recommendation for a garden bed or houseplant pot. Choose a complete fertilizer for your growing context and follow its label.
