Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteChoose walking shoes that feel comfortable immediately, give your toes room, hold your heel securely and suit the surfaces you walk on. Try both shoes with your usual socks, walk around in them, and fit the larger foot—not just the size printed on the box. For everyday walks, comfort and fit matter more than a particular brand or price.
Start with fit, not the size label
Shoe sizes vary between makers, and your feet may not be exactly the same size. Try on both shoes and make sure the larger foot fits comfortably. Your toes should be able to move without being pinched, while the rest of your foot feels held rather than sliding around. Bradford District Care NHS Foundation Trust and AAOS OrthoInfo both emphasize choosing shoes that fit rather than relying on the number on the label.
Try shoes later in the day if your feet tend to swell, and wear the socks you expect to use for walks. Stand up and walk around in the shoes before deciding.
Check toe-box width and depth
Length is only one part of fit. A rounded or square toe box can help avoid crowding when it suits your foot; a pointed shape may squeeze the toes. Also check the shoe’s depth, especially if your toes need extra room or you wear orthoses. Guidance from Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust and AAOS OrthoInfo recommends avoiding shoes that press on the foot.

Secure the heel without squeezing the foot
Laces or another adjustable fastening let you secure the midfoot to suit your foot. Adjust them so the shoe holds comfortably without creating pressure. As you walk, check that your heel stays in place and that the shoe is not rubbing.
Match the sole and upper to your route
For regular walks on hard pavement, consider a thicker sole and soft padding for cushioning. Athletic footwear guidance from Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust also discusses a stable midsole, heel padding and a forefoot rocker as features to consider. These features are not a guarantee that a particular shoe will prevent pain; judge the shoe by how it feels and whether it suits your walk.

For wet conditions, check the shoe’s materials and intended use rather than assuming breathable mesh is waterproof. For ordinary walks, specialist walking shoes are not automatically necessary. The NHS says: “Any shoes or trainers that are comfortable, provide adequate support and do not cause blisters will do.” Specialist walking shoes may be worth considering for longer walks or more challenging routes.
Check compatibility with orthoses
If you use orthoses, try them in the shoes before buying. Check that there is enough depth and, if needed, that the shoe has a removable liner so the orthoses can sit properly. If the combination makes the shoe tight or unstable, it is not a suitable fit.

- Try both shoes and use the larger foot to judge fit.
- Stand and walk around. Confirm that your toes are not pinched, the forefoot has room, and the heel stays comfortably in place.
- Adjust the laces or fastening to hold your foot without pressure or rubbing.
- Consider cushioning for pavement walks, and check weather suitability if you expect wet conditions.
- If you use orthoses, test them in the shoes and check for adequate depth or a removable liner.
Do not count on a break-in period
A shoe that feels wrong in the shop is unlikely to become the right fit simply by wearing it in. AAOS OrthoInfo says there is no need to rely on a break-in period for a shoe that does not fit; Bradford District Care NHS Foundation Trust likewise advises that a correctly fitting shoe should feel comfortable from the start.

General shoe-selection guidance cannot diagnose or treat foot problems. Ask a podiatrist or clinician for individual advice if you have persistent pain, an unusual foot shape, prescribed orthoses, or difficulty finding shoes that fit comfortably. Athletic shoes may not suit everyone; Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust identifies very poor balance and feet turning inward and causing trips as exceptions that may need individualized consideration.
