Choose Game Pass if the games you want are in the right plan’s current catalog and the subscription’s total cost over your playing period is lower than buying those games—and you’ll use its extra benefits. Buy games individually if you want dependable access to particular titles without relying on a subscription or a changing catalog. Check the current local price, plan, platform, and game availability before deciding.
Compare the same games over the same period
There is no universal number of games that makes Game Pass the better deal. The answer depends on which games you will actually play, how long you plan to subscribe, their current individual prices, and whether you will use plan features beyond the catalog.

- List the games you expect to play. Check each title in the current catalog for your country, device, and intended plan. A title appearing in one plan or platform’s catalog does not establish that it is available in another.
- Set a decision period. Choose the months you expect to subscribe, rather than comparing one month of Game Pass with the price of games you intend to play for years.
- Calculate subscription cost. Multiply the current regular local monthly price by the months you expect to subscribe. If you use a temporary offer instead, label it separately and account for the renewal price.
- Calculate purchase cost for the same games. Add current individual prices, taking discounts and any add-ons you intend to buy into account. Specific game prices and sales vary, so check the store listings at the time you decide.
- Count only benefits you would otherwise pay for or use. Depending on plan and platform, benefits may include online multiplayer for paid games, cloud gaming, or partner services. Do not assign value to a feature you will not use.
- Weigh access preference. Game Pass access depends on an active subscription and the title remaining in the catalog. A separate purchase avoids that particular catalog-membership condition; read the applicable store license and platform terms.
Recalculate if your game list, subscription duration, region, plan, or prices change. Xbox says games are sold separately, so subscription access and individual purchase are both options. Xbox Game Pass plan details and the Xbox Store are useful starting points; confirm the live terms and checkout price for your location.
What the US plans cost and include
Xbox’s US plan pages and store listing, checked October 3, 2026, showed the following. Prices are monthly US prices, not global prices; catalog counts are approximate marketing figures and can change. Features, titles, and device support can vary by region, plan, and platform.

| Ultimate | $22.99 | 500+ games across console, PC, and supported devices; includes day-one games. |
These figures and benefits are from Xbox’s US plan overview and US Microsoft Store listing, checked October 3, 2026. They are not a guarantee of what a particular account will be offered today. Xbox says offers may be limited to new subscribers or select regions, and subscriptions renew at the then-current regular price unless canceled. Verify the plan and price at local checkout before subscribing.
When Game Pass is likely to suit you
- You want several catalog games during a defined period. Compare the plan’s cost for those months with the price of the same games individually.
- Your chosen games are currently included on your device. Confirm the exact plan and platform, not just the general service catalog.
- You want a release or bundled feature included in a particular plan. For example, Xbox’s US comparison lists day-one releases for Ultimate and PC Game Pass, while Premium does not include day-one releases. Verify the specific title and current terms.
- You will use additional benefits. Count features such as cloud gaming, eligible partner services, or online console multiplayer for paid games only if they matter to you.
When buying games individually is a better fit
- You mainly want one or a few specific games. Compare their current purchase prices with the subscription cost over the period you would need to play them.
- You want access that is not contingent on the game staying in the catalog. A subscription title can leave the library, and access ends when the subscription is canceled or expires.
- You would keep subscribing just to retain access to a game. Include those future months in the subscription total rather than treating the first month as the full cost.
- The game is not included in a suitable plan. Buying it separately may be more direct than paying for a plan that does not cover the title or platform you want.
Know what subscription access means
Xbox’s Game Pass FAQ says subscribers can access library games until the subscription is canceled or expires, or until a game leaves the library. Xbox also notes that titles, catalog size, features, and availability vary over time by region, plan, and platform. A large advertised catalog therefore does not mean every game is available to every subscriber, or that a particular title will remain available.

Xbox’s US plan overview says recurring billing is on by default. It describes a one-time refund right for the most recent recurring charge if you cancel within 30 days after payment, limited to once per Microsoft account per subscription product. This is not an unconditional refund promise; check the current official plan terms for your account and location.
Is Game Pass worth it if you only play a few games?
It can be, if those games are included in the plan and the cost for the months you need is lower than buying them individually, or if you will also use plan benefits. If the titles are not included, you will play them over a long span, or you want access without catalog changes, buying them separately may suit you better. Use your own game list and current local prices rather than a fixed break-even rule.

Do not pay for online play you do not need
Xbox’s plan comparison says console multiplayer for free-to-play games is available to every Xbox player. A paid Game Pass plan is therefore not necessary solely to play those games online. Paid games’ online multiplayer access is a separate benefit to consider when choosing an eligible plan.
